Just curious, what do you use 2GB of data a day for? I barely use 1GB a month split with my wife, even with both of us using streaming media on data.

My biggest issue is if I switch is not being able to use some of my iPhone gadgets and won't be able to use the nice interface that my vehicle has with the iPhone.
I've seen the same things go obsolete with the next generation of an iOS device- heck, even between OS updates on occasion. Now with a new adapter on top of it, who knows what will still be compatible and what won't. My hope is that they finally standardize the new adapter type and from now on make sure everything 'just works' with it no matter what generation of i-device.

Have to call BS on that, unless your streaming media is 30 minutes of Pandora a month. Listening to Pandora over the phone for a single work day pretty much sucks up a GB by itself.

95% of my phones life is covered under wifi. And when I'm on the road I used cached stations from slacker. My wife has similar usage. We rarely exceed 200-300mb a month between the two of us. We're Verizon's favorite type of customer.

And a major reason why I'm heavily considering dumping VZ and going pre-paid for a much smaller data package. Like the 100mb a month Page Plus ones for $30. I simply don't use much data.

Well I don't listen to Pandora on my phone for an "entire work day". That would be beyond retarded, especially when I'm working with not only an internet connected computer, but a bubble of wifi as well.

I listen to Pandora about as much as the next sane adult -in the car during commutes and trips- and watch a sane amount of netflix as well.

Sure, I guess if you've just got your phone streaming music and videos over the data connection all day for whatever reason you can blow through 2GB every day- but I was just curious who does that and why?

Nexus s user. I'm done with android. I'll definitely be looking at the iPhone 5, maybe even wait for what WP8 does in regards to Windows 8 integration.

Its perfectly sane for an office worker to stream music for 3/4th of the day pretty easily. And since a lot of companies filter streaming media from their wired/wifi networks, the phone is the only option for streaming.

When at home, my phone's on WiFi all the time, and I still pull down 2-3GBs a month. And I don't consider myself a heavy user at all.

Between Jun 17 and Jul 17th, I used about 3.57GBs.

YouTube: 1.06GB
PodKicker: 682MB
Play Store: 518MB
Chrome: 362MB
Facebook: 254MB
Plume: 177MB

If you're 'struggling' to hit the 1GB mark, you likely don't need a smart phone at all or should move to a prepaid package.

2gb in one day is on my high side but I have hit it before. Its still about 500-1gb a day though.

I commute and my drive is about an hour one way. Google Music, Pandora, and iheartradio takes up a huge chunk only during that time. I also use music at the gym which is about 3ish hours of music. The rest is Facebook, instagram, and browser which is a few hundred on its own throughout the day.

Are you on LTE? That'd make a major difference for my use. Verizon's 3g is not exactly blistering and regulates me to basically using it for GPS/maps and quick lookup while on the road or in a store. Anything else is just futile.

How does data use have an relevance to needing a smartphone or not?
I'm wondering the same thing. I should stive to overuse my data connection just because others have no choice in the matter? Why would doing something bone-stupid be the measure of 'smart'phone use?

I've nothing against anyone using whatever data they actually need to, but honestly, it's people that just abuse the hell out of it "because they can" that have handed the providers the excuse they needed to get rid of unlimited plans.

When I was recovering from knee surgery last year I was staying at my aunts to recouperate and her wifi was 768k and I used my phone to tether to my laptop to stream netflix I used 2.5gb in one nights viewing. Within 2 days and 7gb later tmobile throttled me to useless speeds.

I'm not allowed to stream media at my work, though I also couldnt' get away with listening to music 8-12 hours per day either. :D

I guess one advantage of working for a media company is that they expect you to be streaming something all the time.

Such low data use tells me you're not using the smartphone beyond a phone. Limited media streaming, limited social networking, no video chat or calls, little instant messaging, etc. Verizon's plans, for example, start around 100 dollars per month. We're paying near the same, but I'm actually using my smartphone as a smartphone. It's like two individuals buying large 4x4 trucks, but one lives on a farm in a rural county and the other lives downtown in a major city. One had a need for the truck and is getting their money's worth out of it. The other has is to show off.

I reiterate, if you're barely using the smartphone, save yourself money and pick up a feature phone on a pre-paid plan. You'll cut your cell bill in half and the phone will last a week on a charge instead of a day.

Tell me about it. When I was at BMG/Arista we all had 1000watt stereo systems, everyone was streaming and porn web browsing was allowed (market research for album covers, gansta rap always had nekked honeys on the cover). Ahm the good old days.

Meh.

A feature phone won't do GPS when I need it. Won't let me check work email on occasion when I'm out. Won't let my kid play angry birds while at the grocery store checkout. Won't synch up my pictures taken over wifi back to my computer/cloud. It won't let me manage contacts and get a direct access to directions from them. It won't let me cache a couple gigs worth of music from Slacker for $10 a month for basic playback. It won't let me Facetime between my kids and my wife when she's working 2nd shift. And so on for a dozen or more other things.

If I wasn't covered by wifi at work my use would be a little bit higher. But then I'm not one to dick around on my phone all day at work. I've got this place for that :p

The only times I go over 1 GB a month is when I tether my iPhone for laptop use for several days at a time (vacation or business trips). I have WiFi at home. I also have WiFi at work but since I sit in front of a computer all day anyway, that's moot.

---

I skipped the rather meh 4S. I am strongly considering the iPhone 5, but if I get it I may have to pay full unsubsidized price for it, or else buy out the rest of my iPhone 4 contract, which is up in 2013.

However, even if it's cheaper for me to buy out a year's contract and get a subsidized phone, I'm thinking I might buy an unsubsidized phone anyway. It'd make travelling easier - although I don't do that too much - and it'd make switching carriers easier, and I've been considering doing that. And even if I don't switch, it'd make negotiating retentions deals easier.

I DO listen to Slacker (pandora but better) all day at work while sitting at a computer connecter to the internet in a wifi bubble. Why you ask? because EVERY SINGLE STREAMING SERVICE is BLOCKED by work, on wired or wifi, including google music and amazons cloud streaming service. actually they block all of play.google.com

so i use 4-6 GB a month simply streaming music

TBH the only place my phone is ever on wifi is at my house, where i basically dont use it because i can use a computer. i dont even use wifi at airports because its generally slow as hell/wont stay connected/ isnt free

The iphone 5 prototypes are ugly. Apple is batshit retarded for choosing that aspect ratio. The day they release that phone is the day they're doomed.

Warning for trolling, and edited for profanity since I'm here
Phokus, you are more than entitled to your opinion, but I would request you tone it down a bit. I consider your choice of wording to be inflammatory and your post comes across as trolling. If you want to state your opinion so bluntly, then please back up your statements with an explanation.
