Any guess on nearly all my games coming up with a black screen and getting stuck?

Hello,

I've been setting up most computers the same way for years but something is different with my latest build. I had to replace an i7-8700k as the motherboard went bad.

I just did a fresh install new hard drive of Windows 11 24H2 on a new system with a Ryzen 7 9700x on an aurus 870e motherboard.

I'm re-using my 3080 video card. I did a fresh install of the drivers 566.36 - same as I was running on my intel i7-8700k.

I can get some games to run such as Battlefield 1 but Battlefield V, Battlefield Vietnam, BIoshock just came up with black screens. I tried adjusting my resolution, uninstalling,, making sure the folders didn't exist and reinstalling with the same results. I don't want to waste time installing more games until I get this resolved.

Any guesses?

Sounds like it's not detecting the GPU and is possibly running off the on-board chipset. Are you able to verify that the GPU is being detected?

And simple but make sure your display is plugged into the GPU. Easy to accidentally plug HDMI into the motherboard's port when you're plugging in everything else.

I have two displays - both plugged into my GPU. I've discovered if I press alt-tab the second it starts, I can sometimes alt-tab back and run the game. Sometimes it shows up windowed - sometimes I can switch it to full screen, most of the time I can't it goes black again. BIoshock 1 opens reliably now but bioshock 2 is my current issue. I uninstalled and wiped out the directories and any user profile directories I had so they are clean installs - I hadn't modified the defaults on either of them.

OK - I've got bioshock 2 done just a couple dozen more to go!
-Disabling "full screen optimisations" in the EXEs Compatibility tab
-Setting high DPI scaling override to "Application" in the Compatibility tab > High DPI settings.
-Starting the game in a low windowed resolution then opening it to a lower resolution than my screen but full screen, Then switching it to full screen at full resolution - opened up next time full screen right resolution!

OK - Bioshock infinit was kicking my ass until I tried
-Disabling "full screen optimisations" in the EXEs Compatibility tab
-Setting high DPI scaling override to "Application" in the Compatibility tab > High DPI settings.
-Starting the game in a low windowed resolution then opening it to a lower resolution than my screen but full screen, Then switching it to full screen at full resolution. Did NOT open up the next time - got the black screen.
I then tried the same but with the second monitor turned off - BINGO - it worked!

I have one monitor HDMI and the other DP - I try putting them both on the same type of connector.

Just thought I'd share any solutions I stumble accross.

OK - big step forward - Not sure how many games It will be an issue for but my old monitors were 2560x1440 - my new ones are 2560x1600 - if the game has that old setting I get the black screen. Bulletstorm is working now!

GN did a video touching on this affecting 3/4/5 series, try switching monitor DP cables around. Seems to be the main fault that the driver is assigning wrong main monitor. Something to that effect.
