Lol

I'm jealous too. Group of friends are going to moab and fruita next week, stopping at gooseberry mesa on the way. But I can't join them because my sister in law is getting married. Stupid weddings.

That is very unfortunate.

I went SSCX last year and haven't looked back. I have a road bike in the garage in case I want to do a group road ride someday, but my SSCX is my only ride 99% of the time...

you guys hybrids are for p*ssies

False. I enjoyed a borrowed Specialized hybrid when i lived in Florida. It was perfect for light duty sidewalk (you have to be suicidal to ride in the street 24/7 in Florida) and street use. I was able to maintain ~20 MPH on 700 tires inflated to 65 PSI. Maybe the pussies are people that need ultra low rolling resistance/lightweight frames to get around?

I have an ancient Fuji that I love, although I'm thinking about upgrading to a Trek cyclocross because we do have some nice rail trails here in Connecticut that my roadie doesn't do so well on.

One of the best days ever was when I sold my single speed. :p

You running tubeless? I've had tubeless Stans setup on my mtn bike since '08 but haven't tried it on my cross bike.

This is a handy thread to pop up for me ATM.
I'm just about to buy a new bike and need some advice.

I'll be cycling mostly on rough tracks, nothing too drastic, just a lot of fist sized rocks and exposed roots plus lots of mud at certain times of the year.

Now the bit that complicates it slightly is that I have rheumatoid arthritis that can give me some nasty joint pain and I want to mitigate that as much as I can when cycling.

What would be the best type of bike?
Hard tail 29er? Full suspension?

I don't need anything particularly technical or pricey so I was leaving towards a lower range full suspension mongoose salvo or a diamondback recoil 29er. They are both about £600 which is about as much as I want to spend on a non "serious" mountain bike.

Cheers.

Yes although I still wonder at the trend for roadies to go tubeless...

Joint pain where? If it is just your hands a full suspension isn't going to help any. Your money would go further with a hard tail and get you a better front fork which should help more with the hands. You might want to head over the mtbr.com and ask on their forum. They probably have people with rheumatoid arthritis that can be more help full. I'd ask about grips too, I'm sure there are certain kinds that would work better for you.

I am bring an ass rubbing it in. You just need to convince the family to move this direction.

You're not rubbing it in at all. I was actually supposed to be on a Grand Canyon tour right about now, but had to cancel due to work. I never shut up about it

We're actually moving out west, just haven't decided on TX or CO as of yet. Enjoy the rides

colorado seems like a place where the middle class versions of texans live but i would probably even live there than in texas. why does it seem like colorado is full of assholes?

arizona seems like another state where the middle class versions of texans live

dont get a mountain bike get a synapse, roubaix or defy. it worth noting that this is the WORST time of the year to be buying a bike. if you wait til the beginning of fall through christmas all the manufacturers discount the current years models to make way for the 2015's. youll be able to get a $5000 bike for $3700 or less

Do NOT get a road bike for your "rough tracks". Ignore oblama. (Obama, too!) ;)

Definitely look at the full gambit of mtb's at your local store cuz fit is gonna be just as important as anything!

And plenty of deals to be had still. Lots of bike stores STILL have leftovers 13's and even some 12's on their floors due to the overproduction of bikes the last couple years.

I just swept the "tent sale" scene that happened this last weekend with almost ALL of the big bike chain stores out here & deals were ridiculously good. Plus, there's always Craigslist or ebay if you want to get something on the cheap.

for "fist sized rocks and roots" yeah you want a mountainbike but if you r only gonna get one bike, a road bike is most useful, i hate stuff with suspensions

I just upgraded from a Pioneer Trail up to a Giant Talon 27.5 4. Now if only the weather would clear. I bought it when it was 75 and it hasn't been above 30 since :(.
