Ants everywhere

Our house has an ants problem...

From the looks of things, they're able to get into the house from the gap between the garage door and the wall. I don't think i can seal that up without wielding the garage door permantely shut. From there, they pretty much have easy access to the rest of the house.

We've scattered ant traps thoughout the garage and the house (the type that has poisoned food in them, designed to kill the hive) and while they do go for the traps, it doesn't seem to be killing them off. We've had the traps out for over 3 months now, and haven't noticed any change.

In addition, any time there's any food left out, even in small amounts, they swarm all over it. Last night I heated some bread in the toaster over, a small piece must have broken off and fell off the tray because I woke up this morning to a whole column of ants going into the toaster. It was so bad that after i had finished spraying them, I could literally reach in and grab an entire fistful of ant bodies.

They're also found randomly all around the house. I've seen a couple in the bathroom, some on my desk, some in the washer / dryer room. Usually when there's no food around, it's just the random 1 or 2 crawling around.

I try to run a clean house - sealing up food, vacuuming once a week, etc. but I can't help droping 1 or 2 crumbs every once in a while, and its those that cause the swarm.

Anything else I could do?

I had good luck with stuff called Terro I think. If the poisons aren't working though it may be time for a call to the exterminator.

Put ant poison completely around the perimeter of your foundation and garage. They die trying to cross it.

how strong are those poisons usually? our neighborhood has quite a few pets (outdoor cats and whatnot) and the last thing we want is our entire block pissed at us because we killed their pets.

There are various kinds, sprays that are fairly safe once they dry. There are also granulars and powders. The sprays can be applied up on the foundation where animals aren't able to walk on.

I've used it on the front of my house(not in the backyard b/c I have dogs) and never heard of anyone's pet getting sick/dying.

Go for the Terro, or Triazinon (sp)

I have a cat and we use triazinon. She's healthy nad fine, after it being used her whole life

all and all, try using repellents instead of traps/poisons

What he said, it works. Buy a can of raid and hunt the fuckers.

<------ killed roughly 42million ants.

I had a problem, the traps and shit didn't do anything. I perimetered my place with raid, I'd wake up the next day to find thousands of ants just laying on the ground in little balls. I hate those fuckers.

Get some Terro liquid bait

The ants fill up on it, take it back to the colony, and feed it to all the ants there, then they all die.

those are basically the ant traps we have set out. different brand, but same idea. They've worked previous years, but this year, they seem to have no effect whatsoever
Terro Ant Killer II -- MSDS

Try try borax: oil base, such as peanut butter if sugar/honey doesn't work.

I hate ants too, so I use my finger and squish them. It's even more pleasing because all the ants around my house are red ants. Fuckers burn when they bite.

Don't bother with the ant traps and other stuff you'll find in a typical big-box store, put out the extra $ for some Termidor or like professional-type pest control chemicals or have an exterminator do it for you.

That's silly. The stuff at Home Depot is definitely do the job in preventing ants from entering the house.

I've had great luck with sprinkling Sevin around the perimeter. Haven't had any issue using it around dogs either.

we had the same problem as the OP...ants coming in through the gap between floor and one of the doors. We tried everything, RAID, baits, traps but to no success.

Then tried Terro and it worked wonders. We just sprayed it everywhere around that door and after that, we havnt seen any ants. As a precaution, we spray Terro on that door (since it opens to the yard) every couple of months.
