Another Reason to Hate SUVs

LAust-- thats a really good idea. So many people i know drive SUV's and can't even park them without nearly hitting car near them. and if you had to get another license to operate them.. maybe it would deter a lot people from getting them that are only wanting them for the look.

the gov't should make an SUV tax for suv drivers who dont have a valid reason for owning one. not sure how it could implemented though.

not bashing the SUV's so much as the SUV owner/driver. Most truck drivers actually use thier trucks for truck type things occasionally. I have many freinds with SUV's who have never used the "utility vehicle" part beyond using it to haul the cooler down to the baseball feild for tailgating. I have no problem with people who use thier SUV's for the purpose they were intended for. However 90% of people who drive them are just posers.

Let's just end it right here 😉 Your PROBLEM is that you are taking a holier than thou approach to everything as if you have the answer to everything. You claim to know the needs of everyone and you want to choose for them what vehicles they should drive. Who are you tell someone what they can/can't or should/shouldn't drive. You don't have ANY right whatsoever.

Who cares what people buy their vehicles for? You are just making stupid assumptions about people based on what they buy. I could easily do the same:

Honda Civic: Riceboy who will add wings and a far pipe to his car
Pickup truck: White middle aged man with a cowboy hat and boots
Lincoln Town Car: 80 year-old blue haired woman who can't see over the steering wheel
Corvette: Middle-aged balding man with a small penis
Ferrari 360 Modena: Rich prick with a blonde wife with fake tits
Minivan: 30 year old mom with 4 kids and a soccer sticker on the tailgate
Camaro: Poor white trash 20 year old male that lives in a trailer park

It's stupid and makes no sense to label people based on what they drive. I don't give you a hard time for the clothes you wear, for the music you listen to, for the people you choose to date, the job you may chose to take in life, what you may choose to eat for breakfast, or what TV shows you want to watch. It's YOUR decision.

LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE AND LET THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT. If you don't like it, TOUGH SH!T

my input: they're way overused... most people don't need the size. they make for hellish parking lots, and ruin sight for other drivers... mileage is unneeded burden on resources, most are bland anyway except for the BMW suv. I dunno; me, personally, I don't see the point in so many people unneedingly hauling around so much large metal...

LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE AND LET THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT. If you don't like it, TOUGH SH!T
you're right.. i really have no right to tell people what to drive or anything like that. I'm just asking that people think about what they do and be responsible.

I have no right to tell anybody not to smoke--- but becuase it effects me, the gov't has made smoking in some public places illegal....

in the same respect-- SUV's effect me (all other cars on the road do) but SUV's more so becuase they block my sight, and a lot of owners can't drive them, and if somebody driving one F's up and makes a mistake and hits me.. i could be dead becuase of their dumb decision.

so i'm not saying SUV's should be outlawed-- they serve a real purpose, and people who USE them are okay. But 90% of the time, people arent actually using them. you cant deny that. All i say is that some resistrictions should be placed on vehicles like that.

The large vehicle drivers license is a good idea. A tax on Large vehicles should be imposed on non-commercial vehicles, or at least some sort of insurance premium to cover the risk they cause to other drivers on the road. ( possibly, they could take a large vehicle operating class to get rid of this extra cost)....

just my opinion.

The next time I see you driving BY YOURSELF in your car, I'm gonna give you a ticket for not FULLY using the capabilities of your car.

You see how dumb that sounds?

that really does sound dumb though. my car is small, effecient, and much less of a hazzard to other drivers.
when its just me in my car driving around, i am using most of the capabilities of my car.

one person in an SUV though-- its overkill. Especially when so many SUV owners buy them only for looks and the status of owning one.

I think they're just trying to make up for a lacking somewhere else.

I think you're trying to make up for a lacking somewhere by chastising people for buying what they want.

Besides, I'm through arguing in this thread b/c it's pointless. People will buy what they want b/c they can. You can't do anything about so you might as well just quit while you're ahead😉

now that would be cool... but why stop there? what about 10 tanks bolted together and raised 4 feet. And then take out all the extra seats so that only you can sit in it. But also carry the suspension from a camry (becuase aperently it makes for a good suv) over to the tank for optimal offroad ability.

Ralli, Im losing faith in you, my boy. Do you really need ur UBER NISSAN? Why not swing for a geo metro? half the price, better economy. You dont fill all 4 passenger seats daily, do you? Do you need a cd player? You dont listen to a cd 100% of the time in your car, do you?

Its all about WANTS, my friend. people want it, they get it. People can afford it, good for them. How are they a poser if they dont utilize the full potential all the time? Are you a poser because you dont have the cargo rack on your roof loaded up every day?

Point being, your comment was pointless 😉

People want guns too... why should a frickin huge a$$ car be any different if not driven properly? Sure an adult might be able to survive a hit but what happens when its a child.

If you put a uniform bumper height then you have just cancelled out ANY advantage of the ground clearance that an SUV/Pickup truck provides. That ground clearance is crucial to off road handling, high incline manuevering, and various other environmental factors that demand a minimum of 8" of clearance.

Also, near-ground bumper probably makes SUV's approach/departure angle very narrow. But then again, most of the SUV's aren't off-road capable anyway and not really meant for that (they only look like they do 😉 .

This is america, damnit! If you want to drive an SUV, then do it. OTOH, all people are entitled to their opinions, but I've been graced with a limited number of years on this earth. You can damn well believe I am going to drive what I like, unemcumbered by whiny idiots.
Some of those people are gonna wake up someday at 80 years old, having never lived, while the rest of us had a ball. I wonder if anal retentive types have wet their pants or crapped their drawers. I can just see it;
"well the signal seems to indicate that I have to take a crap, but I will have to mull it over for awhile, while I take into consideration, whether I will unbutton with my right or left hand, and whether I need to go no.1 first, or maybe no.2 first. If I go no.2 first, which cheek do I park on the seat first? Will I wipe with my left, or right hand? Will I open a window? Which hand should I rebutton my trousers with, right or left?"

See, some people will whine and have to think about, or advocate anything. :Q

A little off topic here...

About those saying that SUV owners never going offroading...

My friend owns this LandRover we used to convince him to take us offroading on public parks and around the grass late at night. We also drove it ONTO highschool campus and around the track. (hated my highschool) But we did go offroading into canyons and stuff also. Anyways, going offroading is the really really fun. So all you SUV owners who have never driven into backcountry and go offroading, its a must. 😀

All I have to say is (in your best Elmer Fudd voice) "waaaaaahhhhhh, those big scawy SUV's are dangewous". To those who hate SUV's, tough sh!t, I hate you for having a narrow minded opinion. If you think that SUV drivers are the only people who distract themselves while driving, you need to open your eyes, the COPS in my town drive around with cell phones glued to their ears, the little punks from the projects drive their rust bucket CRX's around with the stereo so loud you can't hear your own music with the windows rolled up. And for those who think that a larger vehicle is not as safe in a crash, go check out the NHTSA web site or some of the insurance insitute web sites and see what the results are; here's just one of many. Oh yeah, waaaahhhh, I don't use my SUV to it's full capacity 100% of the time, how many times do you drive around with all of your seats and trunk filled? If your car has traction control and ABS then shame on you for not flooring the throttle at every start and putting the brake pedal to the floor on every stop because you are not using your vehicle's full capabilities. And how about the "sports car" drivers, how many of these cars which are capable of 0 - 60 in 0.3 seconds and top speeds of 187 mph ever make it to the track which is what they were designed for? Yep, SUV hater's, the biggest bunch of hypocrites known to man. Find something real to worry about, as for me, I would drive a HumVee if I could afford one, just for the fact that it will protect my family from all of the other morons on the road. And that's MY CHOICE, and if it pisses you off, then all the better.

I hate SUV's and i am not on that list😀

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say here... People have a right to own guns just the same as they have a right to own whatever vehicle they want.

they are too heavy to show any real power.... a Nissan Sentra can beat an SUV in the quarter mile pretty much because it weighs 2000 pounds less

of course a sentra can beat a suv you fool. know why? they are geared different. that same suv could drag that sentra all over the place.

There is a background check that is done with a gun purchase. Then in some states, there is a license that you must have to carry a concealed weapon. There should be a law that requires an extra license or background check or something...

I'm not saying that people shouldn't be allowed to own one... I'd like to know that there isn't an idiot behind the wheel, thats all. I live in LA btw, where there are more cars than there are people. 🙂

Ha ha ha ha ha, and the hypocricy continues. Why buy a car with metallic paint when regular solid color paint will do? Bah, who needs leather, vinyl works just fine? Why would any vehicle come with an engine larger than a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder? For those who don't get it, I'll speak slowly, it's called P E R S O N A L P R E F R E N C E! Get it? If someone chooses to drive a small, 2 door convertible, which can only fit a golf bag, who cares. If someone wants to put a lot of gas in a lifted, big block Chevy Suburban, who cares. If someone wants to ride a motorcycle, who cares.

Based on all of the self proclaimed "usage" experts here, if I drive an SUV which isn't loaded with at least 5 people and 200 lbs of luggage 100% of the time, then I'm not using my vehicle correctly or as it was intended (btw, where exactly does my owner's manual state the "intended" use of the vehicle?). Yet, if someone drives a 4 wheel drive full sized pickup truck by them selves with nothing in the bed 95% of the time, then that's ok because according to you, a pickup truck is inherently more useful than an SUV just by it's very nature and can be driven in any manner. Well that settles it then, my next vehicle will be a full sized, 4 wheel drive, 4 door pickup with a cap on the bed: it's not an SUV so it must be ok if I drive it only on the road with nothing more than a diaper bag in the bed. Who wants to provide the next argument which doesn't hold water?

As far as a different drivers liscense for large vehicles, why just single out large vehicles? I think everybody should be required to to a practical driving test at least every other year. Just because someone drives a smaller car doesn't eliminate their ability to drive it dangerously. And regarding paying extra taxes for larger vehicles, guess what, they already do, it's called gasoline tax, there's a federal and state portion on every gallon consumed.

The sociallist attitude that several people are displaying in this thread is somewhat amusing however what is truly disturbing is that you people are also allowed to vote, can you say bye bye freedom of choice!

Best post in the whole thread!! You spoiled brats need to READ that CAREFULLY 😀

Why aren't the SUV bashers bashing the pickup trucks that the SUV's are based on?
Probably because moronic yuppy soccer moms who can't drive don't generally drive pickup trucks. I work in a well-to-do area, and every damn second soccer mom drives one... and they're totally oblivious to the road while they talk on the phone. And they NEVER have more than 2 people in the car, and nothing else besides a few groceries. The few pickup drivers are the guys that manicure their lawns. 😉

The illustrative point is that when there's a big snowfall it's almost as if there are more SUVs on the sidewalk than anything else. And some of those SUVs are friggin AWD.

Quite frankly I would not complain if there was an additional 50 cent tax per gallon on all non-work vehicles on the road. The only problem is that wouldn't deter the irritating soccer moms, and would only affect the Joe Schmoes who actually use the SUVs to work for a living.

P.S. I also hate 4-banger ricers who weave in and out of traffic with their neon-endowed Civics and or sedan owners who don't know the meaning of signalling, etc.

Despite previously owning a motorcycle myself I hate most motorcyclists on the road. I try to give them a wide berth but sometimes I think they don't deserve it, because the drivers themselves pay no attention to the rules.

Despite owning a bicycle, I can't stand the lack of heed paid to rules and safety by many cyclists themselves.

Thus SUV soccer moms are just one group to dislike. Doesn't mean we don't hate everyone equally. 😉

How many SUV owners even bother to read the WARNING label under the visor, which says something to the effect, THIS VEHICLE HANDLES DIFFERENTLY THAN A CAR...DO NOT MAKE SUDDEN MANEUVER...HIGH RISK OF ROLLOVERS...
