oh but you don't understand something here my friend, that is power measured at THE ENGINE, you are supposed to measure it at THE WHEELS
put a CRV on a dyno and you can see that 160HP drop down to maybe 80 or so. energy is lost through heat through the power train.

and you know what i havnet read yet in this thread.... SUV's aren't *that* safe

sure, in accidents with other cars.... the suv will probably come out okay. (although, i'm not sure about repair costs on an SUV vs. regular car)

but what about times when an SUV runs into a stationary object-- such a wall, tree or barrier. I dont have the numbers anymore.. but a few years ago if you had an suv and a midsize sedan going at the same speed and both running into a brick wall or tree-- the people in the car were something like nearly twice as likely to walk away.

i dont remember all the reasoning behind this anymore.. had to do with the SUV being built on truck platforms with ladder frames.. i'll look up some links later.

and what about what about taking a corner of on / offramp on the highway to fast.... when was the last time you saw a car roll over doing that? Its a legitimate problem with suv's.

lets not mention the exploding tires.

I feel more secure knowing that my wife and 3 year old son are driving around in an Avalanche, and not a Civic.

And you know what? That's all that matters to me.

If you want to drive a deathtrap because you think you are saving a few trees or something, feel free. But don't try to tell me what to do.

not trying to tell you waht to do.. but i am saying that your SUV isnt as safe as you think it is. and its understandle you want to be safe, same with your son. But are you saying you wouldnt feel bad hitting another car and killing that driver, when if you had been driving a regular car both you and them would have walked away.

The olny beef i have with SUV's is that they are too big for everyday driving. People use these huge 4x4's as if they are normal cars: to drop off a movie or to get to work. They are great for bringing a boat to a lake or something but should not be a main mode of transportation.

Yeah, my friend's dad has a Subaru Outback and that thing can haul a lot of stuff. It was able to haul more than his friend's Jimmy when moving.

as for the dumb "mini-ute's" or car based SUV's--- they are pointless.. they are to low the ground and to underpowerd and lack the suspension necessary to go off road.

If i wanted better handling, better gas mileage, more cargo space, better safety, better looks, and probably cheaper insurance, not to mention the added safety and convienence to other drivers on the road-- you can get a Station wagon, such as the subaru outback or legacy wagon which would probably kill your highlander in any and every aspect.

as for sentras, last year i fit

a mini fridge,
microwave,
desktop computer w/19" monitor and klipsch 4:1 speakrs,
27" tv,
clothes,
books
lacrosse equipment
and an ass load of other crap in my car.

bah you couldnt haul 6 of your friends in your sentra, ive done many times in my explorer.

If all you care about is carrying people, you should consider a minivan. They're a lot safer, more economical, AND you will still be able to haul all of your friends around.

I feel for you bikers, but btw, I always signal for you guys and are generally alot nicer than I am with the general motoring community.

Amen. Most motorists are, but once in a while there's that dickhead who's just ignorant or doesn't care. Today while biking down a street with my friend this guy just zooms right past us with so little room that if I had stuck my hand out 6 inches to the left he would have hit it. I'm thinking of taping knives to my handlebars.. they wanna zoom close to me like that, SCCRRGGHHH! :D;)

I took my Camry back home last Tuesday and brought the Highlander up the next day to load all of my crap in it (no way I was fitting everything in my car). Now lemme see, what did I load in the Highlander (with the rear seats still upright):

35" tall refrigerator (standing upright of course), microwave, shelf, full width window fan, oscillating fan with base, a duffle bag filled with a sh!tload of books, about 8 shopping bags full of various cables, wires, electronic components, scanner - printer - speakers (all in their original boxes), my computer, my 18.1" LCD monitor, large box of clothes and various items from my desk droor, a large basket full of clothes, and a closet full of clothes (still on the hangers) and shoes and various other items scattered between the rear seats and the cargo area. The front passenger seat was empty except for the two letters I had to mail at the post office and my book bag in the front passenger floor board;)

And I averaged 23 MPG on the way back home so go piss in the wind or something.

If you don't have one, STHU. If you haven't driven one, STHU. If you CAN'T drive one, STHU. Otherwise, STHU! ;)

Oh, and being that the Highlander is based on the Camry chassis and hence sits lower than most traditonal SUVs, it won't do as much damage to you pansy bleeding hearts in your CRXs.

LOL I love all the STHU references.

BTW STHU :D

The point is, if someone is pissed off b/c I drive an SUV, that's their idiotic problem :) I don't care if someone drives a bigass F-350 or if someone drives a extended wheelbase minivan or a 12 passgenger cargo van or a Corvette. There are a variety of different automobile body stiles and types out there to chose from. If I go by what everyone of the SUV bashers in here is going with, we'd all be driving Accords, Camrys, and Outbacks. Life is full of choices, make YOUR OWN DECISIONS!

If I spent all my time wondering about what YOU people thought about what I drive, then I'd be wasting away my life.

It's not a matter of pissing someone off on purpose, I drive whatever the hell I want to drive...not what YOU THINK I should drive.

you tard. WTF does it matter if the HP was measured at the wheels or not? And you claim there's a 50% loss through the drivetrain? hahahaah....
so says the man who has never taken a physics class in his entire life

my friend put his volkswagon jetta rated at 140HP when he bought it (used, like a ninty something) on the dyno at the university and it said it only had 70HP at the front wheel.
i saw a dyno test on TV with a ford mustang cobra (the horse snake) rated as having 270HP, they put it on the dyno and it said it only had 160HP at the rear wheel.

heat is the most concentrated form of energy you will ever find, the amount of energy released when you burn a match is enough for your body to run up a flight of stairs a few times. the heat given off through the drive train is quite a bit.

Exactly. Why aren't the SUV bashers bashing the pickup trucks that the SUV's are based on? B/C they're hypocrites, that's why :)

Like I said above, you can't change regulations on truck-based SUV's until you change the pickups they're based on.

haha i think the whole point of this thread is that everyone should drive weinie econocars with 4bangers like a sentra... now i want to get an suv just so i can piss off guys that complain about them.. or i should raise my truck another couple of inches.. and get a really big bumper in the front..

Thx for agreeing, NFS4 ;)

So what are you guys saying? All vehicles should have their bumpers at the exact same height? Because thats what you are saying about SUV's - the bumper is too high. So anyone with a lowered car, lift it. Anyone with a raised truck, drop it back down to stock. We will all now use badass 14'' sentra rims and standard PepBoys 4-for-$100 tires. This is the only way to safety, right?

STFU and wear your seatbelt and pray. No one wants to hear u fags whine about boohoo SUVs. SUVs have their uses, as do the pussy cars you fellas recommend. Me, being me big fat self, would prefer a roomy SUV that I fit in comfortably, along with 4 5 or 6 other friends. It can pull trailers. It can hold numerous people COMFORTABLY. It has lots of cargo area for groceries or whatever.

Next time your maxima can do all of the above, please let me know.

why do people diss 4-bangers? the porche boxster is a 4 cylinder and it accelerates super fast, handles awesome and goes pretty fast.
*editted because i spelled boxster wrong*

If you know ANYTHING about the design of truck based SUVs (the ones in question here), you would KNOW that you CAN'T do anything about them until you address the PICKUP trucks that they are BASED on.
NFS4 -
If you think the government should even be involved in things like this, do you think that there should be standard bumper heights for all 'passenger' vehicles?
(Let's leave road graders and Peterbilts out of this for now) :)

Im sorry, but the PORSCHE is in the hundred thou class, sir. it is not considered a "4-banger"

4-bangers are the lame little thingies we make fun of that have less than 150hp.

You may leave the thread now b/c you are talking bullsh!t :)

The Porsche Boxster doesn't use a straight ANYTHING. No Porsche does. And NO current Porsche uses a 4-banger either.

The Boxster uses TWO Flat-6 engines:

2.7 liter 217HP Flat-6 (boxer)
3.2 liter 250HP Flat-6 (boxer)

The door out of this thread is on your right;)

Hell no!:D An Expedition is different from a Honda Accord which is different from a Corvette. A single uniform bumper height for ALL vehicles is stupid and not really feasible given the different vehicle types there are on the road.

let me ask you guys -

Do you hate SUV's? Or the soccer moms driving them?

Are you jealous that they can afford to own and maintain an SUV?

If you're not jealous or hateful of the mom, why hate the SUV? Have you ever driven one? Do you know how to drive a large vehicle? I personally love go-karts*, but prefer not to drive them on the streets like you tards imply we should.

*Go-karts refers to the lame-o 4-bangers and wussy v6's you all hype up over...
