Another PS3 downer

With Reeves' statements, it appears as though Sony will be producing PlayStation 3 consoles with different Cell processors -- some with all eight cores operational and some with just seven. Reeves however does not believe that Sony will offer different pricing for the machines and only time will tell if there will be performance differences. Reeves says however that users will not see any differences in speed. "The PlayStation 3 only uses seven of [the eight cores]. You'd have a spare."

In the interview, Reeves also talks about failure rate as there is a possibility that one of the cores in the Cell will "blow" at any given time. Reeves says that usually, testing during fabrication stages will detect whether a core or more will be problematic. Using electrical "fuses", IBM can "blow" out a core during wafer testing. When asked what would happen if a 7-core PlayStation 3 ends up losing another core during operation, Reeves stated that the user would simply send the unit back for replacement. Unfortunately, this only applies if the console is still under warranty -- if it isn't, the console is dead.

they should just give up on it and start designing a PS4

they should make a cartridge-addon for the wii and call it the wii-station

just delay it another 6 months to get it right (we're already used to waiting for it anyway), there's no use of releasing a buggy product early

It's kind of funny that the crappy chips with half the cores nonfunctional are still good enough for "medical and defense" purposes. Really shows you where our priorities are as a species:laugh:

I remember seeing a comment about that. It is sad. At these yields, I wonder how much more Sony is losing. I'm sure IBM is charging a lot more of these chips than originally because of the low yields.

Gogo Nintendo. /fanboi off.

Guess Sony gets the shaft for hyping up a product based on technology with questionable reliability. These shenanigans keep up and even their hardcore fans and "affluent" (read: spoiled) kids won't buy 'em.

Man things sure aren't looking good for Sony. I'm sure a lot of this has to do with the press that Sony has been getting and their executives continually egotistical comments.

I do think that some of their upcoming games look nice...but nothing that makes me think it is more capable than an Xbox 360.

I've happily spent my $400 on an Xbox 360 playing games that are available today. Recently downloaded the E3 trailer for Mass Effect...man am I ever looking forward to that game.

the wii graphics really does look craptastically sucking but they are not selling graphics.
the 360 will drop in price, i think wii > 360 > ps3 in terms of sales for the first year after all 3 of them are released.

I think it's a good idea for a lot of reasons. One is that it will save Sony money and make the chips more affordable and available, and secondly, as yields ramp up, in a year or two they can have an "upgrade" for PS3 where all 8 cores are enabled.

Well, this will certainly do massive damage to PS3's supply on release. Really hits them in their weak spot.

I think chip prices for the Cell will increase as a result of this as production costs per usable chip rise. 2nd, the thing that will suck is that the Cell does not seem to be reliable and prone to have cores blown. This does not bode well for Playstation buyers based on Sony's past history (I went through 3 PS2's and had to turn my PS1 upside down to play haha).

I had both the PS2 and XBox so I am trying not to be biased. I think Microsoft has done a great job this time in putting out a great product and not letting the Sony hype machine takeover.

As cocky as Microsoft is, Sony is even worse. So far Sony hasn't put out anything that really impress me beyond the 360. The only promise it has is the exclusives in Square games and MGS. However, I don't think it'll be worth it to pay at least $720 bucks for a PS3 and 2 games to play them 🙂

Is there a good affordable console system coming out? In the $300 range? I am really behind the curve on these things.

True, but (like all the recent systems) it will sell below cost and they will have probably have to make it up with the game prices.

You can get a 360 core for $300 (no HDD though). Rumored to be a price drop this coming fall/winter.

Wii will be in the $200-$300 range. Graphics will only be slightly better than the Xbox/Gamecube/PS2. Won't support HD. Major selling point will be the controller.

wrong.

nintendo is the ONLY company that actually MAKES money on the sales of their consoles.

Wow, I was orginally very excited for the PS3, now I guess it's just the Wii for me, unless something massive changes over the next year before PS3 gets released.

this is kinda big for me, as much as me almost 100% sure i'll be getting a wii, i know it wont be pretty on my Aquos 1080p LCD TV. i mean, the gamecube supported 480p, the xbox did 720p, will the wii at least go to 720p?
