Honest opinion here - but if you are "seeking asylum" then crossing 5 countries to the one of your choosing isn't asylum.

Asylum is going to the nearest safe place to rid yourself of domestic-based dangers - of which there are plenty of reasonably safe ones throughout South America - and likely plenty within that same country.

People from Guatemala cross 1 border before appearing at our own. People from Honduras & El Salvador cross the Guatemalan border twice to get here. Mexico has to let them thru to maintain domestic tranquillity.

We import no significant amount oil from Honduras, El Salvador, or Guatemala. If we were not sending foreign aid this situation would be markedly worse than it is now which I'm sure people have trouble comprehending. If you really want to get into the history of how the US has abused basically everybody to the south of us over the last century and a half we can go all the way back to the Monroe doctrine if you want. We've stolen land, propped up murderous dictators, funded and fomented rebellion, gone to war and killed people for corporate interests, stifled political dissent, etc for many many decades. There is probably nowhere on earth that we've interfered with more.
