This is the 3rd time our company has given the Athlon Platform a try over a period of 6 months.

1st time: Classic Athlon on Irongate chipset = random crashes in 98 & NT.

2nd time: Classic Athlon on VIA 133 chipset = Massive AGP problems = imcompatible with 3D Studio.

3rd time: Duron on VIA Socket A chipset = freezes at the login screen on NT (this is the first time I've seen something like this happen in a system that is not overclocked, simply amazing).

Sure the K7 architecture rocks, but what good does that do if the platform is crap.

Advise: corporate buyers stick to Intel for now till AMD proves its worth with the Athlon Assured programme.

If you would post your specs etc, maybe we can help you rather then posting a negative comment, btw I`ve a T-bird on a Via board with rock solid stability(also I`m a gamer).

I have built many systems both AMD and Intel. I have never had the issue you have mentioned and found it to be the fault of the platform. It is most likely an installation problem or setup issue with interrupts and base addresses in NT.

Being that I own both systems have use quality parts, I can only assume your company probably order from tiger or some of those low vendor. Because I see some generic pcchips stuff that trys to run intel/amd chips and just plain old crash. It's not the chip, its the crap you been buying.

The problem is most likely that the technician putting the systems together, doesn't know his head from his toes. Would that be you alnoor?

My question, why does everybody think, it's the CPU when something freezes?????? Couldn't it be a broken Mobo, or broken RAM????? Or maybe not so much power???? Or maybe that the computer isn't good configured? Don't just say, AMD is crap, cuz you're computer doesn't work! Guys, think before you post

We have built several AMD machines. I even have 3 of them in a lawyers firm. Believe me, if they had trouble, I would know about it!!! BTW, my machine had issues because I'm a tech freak that can't leave my software or configs well enough alone!!! That has since slowed and this thing works great.

What power supply are you using, is it AMD cert. also did you do a clean install of NT4 or just pull the HDD from the old system and plug it in... I might be an Intel freek but I wouldn't go as far to knock AMD on an ID10T error! AMD has shown some serious improvements and I quite possible might build a Thunderbird rig next year! Just as I was with 3Dfx... I saw the light of the GeForce... ah it might have some issues with compatability but my GeForce II GTS 32MB smokes my V3's!

EH, sounds like a user error there alnoor. If you flip the idiot switch it fixes EVERYTHING...

*note* this switch is on the back of your head...

Here's a tip, use high quality components.

AMD chips are a little pickier than Intel about high quality components, but if you put together an intel system using a piece of $hit motherboard, crappy generic no-name RAM, and so on; it will suck just as bad.

It's like saying McDonalds is fault because YOU spilled hot coffee on yourself... wait a minute. Maybe he could sue AMD for a few million!!!!

I agree that the platforms AMD chips run on have caused a few problems but nothing that can't be fixed with driver updates. True, you might have to use your head slightly when getting this stuff to work, but nothing requiring real effort.

If you were to purchase a system from a pc maker such as micron with a thunderbird in it, it would run fine. You would unpack it, set it up, and it would run fine just like an intel box.

When you build machines you assume a little responsibility. It is expected (at least, I expect) of tweakers to be a bit more versed in the workings of the electronics they are playing with. The last thing I would expect from anyone here would be, "It doesnt work, it is worthless" .. Considering the massive amount of information one can draw from forums such as these, the information is all out there - go find it. If it's broken, there is a way to fix it and that information is not hidden.

RD couldn't have said it better. If your getting PC's for your company, you get what's been around and is proven stable and reliable and cheap (i810/Piii). ;)

We've been installing i810/Piii's all year long (240 now I think). Wow do we have a LOT of happy users ;)

Never go after the "new and cool" stuff. That's for the enthusiest (like us).

Athlon has been out for only a year, and is JUST NOW starting to get the attention of a mainstream platform, these things take time.

Did biggest difference between Piii and Athlon, is a Piii system can just about be taken out of the box and setup hastle free, Athlon systems take a bit of "tweaking" to get them right, BUT, you CAN get them right... Both systems are just as stable as the other, one just takes a little more work ;)

Sounds like this troll just doesn't know anything about "tweaking". hehe

Rectalfier, you're a funny guy!
I can't help wondering how many years the Athlon parts can go on at the high temps they run at. Yes, I do have one. Yes, I am proud of it. Yes, it is even stable. But for how long at 51 Celsius?
