But pit bulls are kind and gentle animals that would never freak out and start killing people.

It must have been the way the animals were raised that made then mean.

Sadly, the dogs need to be put to sleep and the owner charged. An owner should be held responsible for the actions of their dogs.

Note, I am assuming woman didn't provoke the dogs, by teasing, invading the owner's property, etc.

I can say that not all pitbulls are bad. If you train a dog properly you can change its "instincts". My sister has a female pitbull and its extremely behaved. It doesnt bark or bite, it will growl if it thinks theres a threat but you can say no and it will stop. She has had people kick/hit it (some asshole even attacked and stabed it with a stick) and it never responded in anger. It wont even take food out of your hand in case it accidently bites you. She'll sit and whine if your teasing her with food but wont do anything else.

She has taken her as volunteer search and rescue, it plays well with any dog or cat (even had a kitten freind), follows orders, and is freindly with kids.

Why did she pick a pitbull? It was tossed in the trash as a puppy (because it was female) and she saved it. I seen plenty of other dogs with bad attitude...most of it from the trainer (or lack thereof). Pitbulls might have a natural tendancy to be bad, so it seems like they all are...when reallly its just the lack of care (or purposely bad training) for this type of dog that leaves it bad. But there are other dogs, like rottweilers, the same way.

I want to add, if this really is the fault of the owner/dog and not the woman (as Ive seen myself, some people will purposely attack these dogs) then I will agree with charging the owner and putting the dogs down.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. I have owned pitbulls for the past 13 years, and they are the most lovable, loyal dogs in my experience. Very intelligent and great with kids. Our kids have crawled over and played with our current pit for years. They even kiss her on the lips. She has never even so much as growled at a child.

"I've never seen a poorly trained basset hound kill anyone."

I bet youve never heard of a chihuahua killing anyone either, but they are pretty nasty naturally.

That's because each dog has different genetic dispositions. It is very hard to get a basset hound to bite let alone kill anyone. They are one of the least likely dogs to bite and not a good comparison.

Pit Bulls have plenty of great traits and properly trained make great pets and family companions. But they aren't for everyone, and unfortunately they have become a status symbol for someone who wants to be "badass". And this is exactly the type of owner that is wrong for the breed.

I agree.

No.. you can't.

That's why they're called instincts.

the problem is when a pitbull goes apeshit actual damage is done. when a Pomeranian goes apeshit everybody laughs.

my dog got bit by a pitbull once, completely uncalled for. Of course, it "was the first time something like that ever happened".

I have friends with very well trained pits but they still scare the fuck out of me.

I agree with him, and you're only reinforcing the point he's making. Pitbulls are some of the most loyal, loving dogs that you can have, 99.999% of the time. The problem is, that 0.001% of the time, well "problem" is an understatement. Quite often, that .001% is the result of how they're raised. But, that doesn't explain every case of a pitbull suddenly acting atypically and attacking a human causing serious injury or death.

Siegfried and Roy raised some wonderful tigers. How'd that turn out for them in the end? Unless I'm mistaken, Siegfried and Roy still maintain that the tiger was actually trying to protect Roy when it dragged him off the stage by his neck, not hurt him. Most animal behaviorists disagree. Regardless, let's assume that Siegfried and Roy are correct - the animal was trying to protect Roy. Roy was maimed and nearly killed as a result. The tigers are simply such powerful animals. Pitbulls aren't as powerful as tigers; certainly not. However, among dogs, they're some of the most powerful. When things go wrong with that much power, it's uh oh time.

Oh yes they are pit's so they must be evil.....I can train a fucking lab to do the same thing, don't blame the dog, shoot the owner.

pitbulls are fantastic animals and are superior animals around children. no doubt about it.

when they are raised and "trained" by savages, however, they become savages. just like any other dog.

punish the savages who owned these dogs with death and unfortunately, the dogs will probably have to be destroyed, as well.

From TFA:

The other three dogs were taken to an animal shelter, but authorities said they will not make a determination on whether to destroy them until the conclusion of their investigation.

The dogs belonged to a couple named John and Maria Hardiman, who were not present during the attack, police said.

New Mexico State Police officials were conferring with the local District Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

Hell fucking yes, the dogs need to be destroyed, and hell fucking yes criminal charges are warranted.

lawyers love pit bull owners. If you own a pit bull you are walking around with your wallet open.
