Sorry I know how to handle a firearm so that it isn't a danger to myself and those around me? Seriously though, how not to shoot yourself isn't rocket science.

You understand that accidents are moments of uncontrolled chaos, right?

They are the moments when you're not in control... I don't mean you, because you're a flawless machine of graceful execution of movement and form... but other people, they trip and shit from time to time.

"One failed attempt at a shoe bomb and we all take off our shoes at the airport. Thirty-one school shootings since Columbine and no change in our regulation of guns."

That's because attempting to regulate guns doesnt do anything to prevent these shootings. How many times are you people going to keep parroting the same claptrap over and over and over while nothing changes? You want to fix the problem then stop drugging the damn kids, stop letting the teachers unions treat kids like milk cows, stop this ridiculous push towards college and debt slavery. There are a dozen real things that could be done but none of it will because so many idiot morons have their heads stuffed up their butts about guns. Guns were prevalent throughout this country's history. HISTORY, you know that thing you have to read books (ack!) and study (!!Ack!) in order to become knowledgeable? Anyway, putting the obvious willful ignorance aside, you need to look at the things that have changed over the last 50 or so years to find things that actually correlate to the increase in school shooting. Drugs and drug laws (both the legal and illegal kinds). Teacher unions. Tenure. Police state. Media/pop culture and who controls it. Welfare. Those are the things that correlate, not guns. But these stupid, STUPID morons just keep going after the god damn guns.

Like irrational fear of pieces of metal? Yes, that's one step.

I hope you're talking about guns and not bullets... because bullet fear is rational.

But along with guns maybe people could calm down about the looming threat of criminals around every corner... under their beds... etc.

Do you have a smoke detector in your house?

Do you put your seatbelt on when you drive?

You are going off on a tangent without knowing jack shit about this shooting.

Let's assume... Let's predict the following:

The shooter was another student who for whatever reason targeted the other student. The reason for purposes of discussion doesn't matter.

Predicting that... Where did the student get a semi-automatic handgun? (assuming it had to be a handgun as he got it into school or on school grounds - article mentions it was a semi-automatic)

Where did he get it? Probably owned by one of his parents. How? Because his jackass parent(s) kept it unlocked and ready by the nightstand, in the night stand, etc... Either that they kept it locked up and the kid knew the combination, where the key was etc.

The problem isn't the firearm. The need isn't more gun control. The solution is taking this parent (regardless of additional offspring in the picture) and charging them with accessory to murder/facilitating a murder and locking them up for ten+ years. Edit: When people see other gun owners paying that penalty, a large number of otherwise responsible gun owners will become actually responsible gun owners.

If my prediction isn't true or even close to true, I'll gladly engage the the normal gun crime banter here...

This is about responsible gun ownership. This is about enforcing stiff penalties for gun owners who do not control the access and safety of their weapons at all times. I say that as a gun owner. I say that as a rabid 2nd amendment supporter. I say that as an owner of scary black rifles. I say that as a parent with a child in my house.

I'll agree with this - and I'll say it as someone NOT securing their guns correctly. I need to buy a safe, but keep putting it off because a safe in an apartment is hard.

Has my smoke/CO detector gone off correctly a few times? Yup.

Do I see car accidents on the freeway every day? Yes.

So how prevalent is crime in your neighborhood? It isn't in mine.

Are you a moron?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethan_Couch

Oh, I guess since he killed people outside of school, it's OK...

Nah, I think you're the moron. Trying to compare this person's drunk driving to driving a SUV into a school or bleachers is pretty weak...Considering it's pretty ridiculous that somebody on here already tried compare the ability for a person to drunk drive into a school full of people to bringing a gun to it and shooting the place up on the same level.

Anyway, glad the ol song and dance of "ermahgurd, drunk driving is just like guns!" topic has come up for the 100th time in P&N again. Yes we alllll know cars kill people more than guns, so holy tits, let's ban cars asap. We get it.

But again, self-driving cars are going to close that weak comparison within a couple generations, and I'm sure there will still be a vehemently defensive gun culture.

Agreed. Maybe not in our life time, but I'm hoping at some point, every car will be self driving. This will basically eliminate drunk driving, and as you said, effectively make that argument invalid.

Furthermore, just because two things have the same outcome, does not imply the use of or purpose of that mechanism is the same. Yep, drunk drivers and just driving in general kill far more people than guns. However, the sole purpose of a car is to transport people and goods. That's it. The fact they kill humans, accidental or otherwise does not matter. It's natural due to their interactions on the roads.

A gun's sole purpose is to take the life of something. Whether it be animals or humans, it's MAIN focus has been and always will be killing. Now of course, 99% of gun owners don't actually use guns to kill humans.. But many do to kill animals. Doesn't make them any more or less harmful as these people are still responsible gun owners. It just so happens that shooting a firearm is also enjoyable when done safely. It's a fun hobby and is something pleasurable to master. That's still also independent of the fact that it's intended purpose is different than of a car's.

I'm still waiting to hear what the gun grabber people are willing to offer in exchange for more gun laws.

so far crickets.

Doesn't sound like compromise then does it.

LOL, Democrats. "Facts have a liberal bias. Until the topic is guns, at which point all logic goes out the window and emotion and stupidity rule the day."

What an emotionally stupid thing to say. Guns are not theroblems. Our emotionally ignorant, ego driven competitive society is the problem. Kids grow up hating themselves because they are put down as competitive failures, and they kill to get even, to reclaim their lost self respect in the only way they know how to. We fail as an emotionally supportive, healing society that practices empathy and care. We let our sick fester until the disease is terminal. These kids have a death wish their self hate is so great. They feel hopeless and ful of rage. Look at how angry you are.

Only a few folk love you for how expressive of your contempt for things is, folk like me, folk who have deep sympathy for your condition, having suffered from it long ago, myself.. Love you, you worthless fucker.

Yes, and self-defense against other humans is a pretty fundamental human right that should be afforded to those that want it. If it was all about hunters and hobbyists I would care about as much about magazine sizes and registration as I would safety belt laws and car registration (although as someone that leans mostly libertarian I would still care to some extent). The purpose of lawfully killing other humans is exactly what is so important about protecting gun rights, far more important than "free" transportation (as opposed to public transportation on the government's clock) via cars.

I own thousands of bullets at the moment, and fear none of them.

Self hate is not the problem, overdeveloped self love is the problem. But other than that, you're correct.

I'm aware. That's why things like gun buy back programs exist, etc. Encourage people to sell their non "smart guns" in exchange for smart ones. It could be done.

That's right, gun buy back programs do exist, and have for a while. Many times no questions asked, yet there are still tons of guns out there. Criminals don't like to give up their guns.

I agree...But I wasn't saying people were selling/trading a gun and getting nothing, if you are implying a situation where the only people with guns left were criminals (and obviously police/military).

They'd trade in their current firearm for one with the "smart" technology so they may still obtain their legal 2nd amendment right.

Who's going to pay for that?
