Police spokesman reading statement: "The autopsy results will take around six weeks because we're desperately hoping something in the toxicology reports will save us, ell oh ell, don't read that last part out loud . . . Uh . . . Wait . . ."

Exactly. It's OK that we shot him in the back because drugs. Err...he also died of a heart attack due to heart disease. Not from bullets. Nope...totally not from bullets. Oh and then he got some excited delirium too.

Apparently this guy was charging backward. Obviously a deranged thug.

It makes sense if you actually think about it. He charged backward because his sword was ON HIS BACK! How could he stab them charging forward?

True I didn't think about it. He clearly charged backwards to maximize his use of the reverse thug weapon sword. Another case of a black man charging backwards to attack a police officer who has the right to go home to his family at night. He was probably high on something too so using a tazer would have been useless. The police was right in choosing to use a gun right off the bat, because it's important that the police be able to go home to their family at night.

Oh and another thing NONE of us has thought about yet: swords block bullets. How could he block cop bullets by turning to face them? I feel like we're idiots for not putting this together sooner.

I really think we should rally for the police on this one. Maybe we can help them dig up dirt about his grieving family members and help drag them through the mud too. Assuming the cops are not already all over that.

I am from Utah, I drive on Redwood EVERY day. This place has no shortage of Racists, and cops seem to be even more so. I would bet he was shot was because he was black and perceived to be a danger/criminal.

Could be exactly that, but it sounds like a rush to judgement IMO.

What's the scenario for racist cops murdering this guy because he's black?

From recent CNN article,

"We don't know exactly what happened, but the fact that a black kid with an Afro was shot while walking down the street by two white officers in a city that is 96% white is concerning," Edwards said. "There are serious questions as to why officers were questioning him and the use of force in this situation."

Should the first 6 words really need to be bolded for folks to get a grip? Did this attorney really leave out "sword" while framing the important details of what occurred but felt obliged to include "afro"? The guy is murdering any decency here with this outline.

The rest of it is BS until the first 6 words have some framework. But we always get the hollow BS blasted through racists seeking temporary asylum amongst trajic incidents.

If the guy is minding his own business and sword never leaves his back then wtf is going on with the officers. If the guy is using the sword and lunging at people and officers then perhaps excessive force, but justified shooting.

There was a guy at a supermarket near where I went to college who killed 6 people with a sword before being shot to death. One strike with a sword will kill. If the guy in this story used the sword in a fashion indicating it was real, he was obviously perceived as a very serious threat to anyone he came in contact with.

If that sword comes out in a menacing way towards cops or anyone and he's told to put it down but doesn't, the guy is toast. What if cops let him go and he kills your niece nephew brother sister child in his next 50-100ft while he's running away?

Do we know if the sword was sheathed where he fell dead?

You missed the part where the autopsy already revealed that he was shot 6 times in the back. We've already established here that he was charging dangerously backwards towards the police officer and two piece of evidence proves this.

1. Sword was behind his back, so he had to be charging backwards towards the police.
2. Swords according to Japanese Anime can block/cut bullets and sword user usually win against gun users. The suspect clearly had his sword on his back while charging backwards towards the police to block the bullet and to come at them at a very menacing fashion. Had the officers not reacted quickly enough and shot him 6 times while he was charging at them backwards, the officers would not be able to go home to their families that night? Have you not watch Afro Samurai?

Got that, used some intelligence. Hmmm, not critical to justified shooting or not.

We don't know what happened before shots. Used some more intelligence. Hmmm, this matters in regards to justified shooting or not.

Official autopsy not out yet. Lack of information about what occurred by race baiting attorney. Kinda makes you think they are interested in one thing over any other...

Do I need to use race to paint this in an easy to understand picture? Is it simply easier to hear "It was obviously due to racism, dead guy is black."

Sure, "It was obviously due to racism, dead guy is black."

I never knew BS was so sticky and good feeling. I feel better already, and such company, and such easily found company, oh boy got a winning attitude here and friends for life.

Is this really hard to get? You may still get the racist angle, or murdering sociopath cops angle, but that's going to have to wait until more info comes in.

If we check back when info is in and this indeed unjustified shooting, perhaps we go with racism angle from there?

All joking aside.
I think it is necessarily for the media to pursue the racism angle. If race was not a factor and the cops are innocent, so be it, the media looks like a douche.

But if race was a factor, and the media does not pursue it, then what happens?
Explore the scenario in which the neighborhood was racist, the police force was racist, and the police did murder the guy with his back turn. If the media did no pursue the race angle, then this will receive very little to no coverage. With very little national attention to this, it's very likely the local jury pooled from the same local racist pool along with the unwilling prosecutor makes a very nonchalant effort before declaring that the officers acted accordingly and are "not guilty." The injustice gets swept under a rug and nobody outside of the local community knows about it.

Today's lesson in Cop Logic®: How to use extremely unlikely circumstances that bear no resemblance to this case in order to convince people that the cops had no choice or else those extremely unlikely circumstances would happen. Repeat the following:

"What if cops don't <brutal and/or evil action> and then <extremely unlikely yet scary deed> happens to your <someone(s) you love>? What then? You would be the first to <idiotic emotions that you are not actually stupid enough to feel if said circumstances happened>."

I saw on the news today that a woman had taken a picture from inside her car of this kid and the two officers (who were white) and all seemed well and professional at first. The kid had a smile on his face his hands down to his side as depicted in the picture which they showed on the news. She said she looked down for one moment and suddenly looked up and the kid was running away and the cops were shooting non stop at him. They said he had one point blank shot dead center in the middle of his back, and many shots to the back near the shoulder, he was hit in the back of the legs too. A number of witnesses said he was just flat out shot in the back while running away. Apparently he died very far away from where the initial incident report said and there were many inconsistencies. Today however the news reported that the police department revised the report after the women's picture was released.

I am curious also as to why it would take them so long to get the autopsy done.

The neighborhood is predominantly white and this kid stands out because he is black and very tall and thin and has the whole afro look going on.

Again, I will say that there seem to be a lot of people calling in to police when ever they see a black kid, and it is getting many of them killed.

This kid wasn't a thug, he doesn't have a criminal record either. He and his folks live in that neighborhood which is middle class.

The picture was taken on the opposite street corner from the bank, approximately 300ft away. Here's the general vicinity....

Shame that Americans need to read foreign newspapers in order to find real investigative journalism. The Guardian has been doing a great job. :)

Utah authorities alter account of Darrien Hunt shooting by police
http://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-the-back-by-utah-police-says-family-attorney

After several days of silence Tim Taylor, the chief deputy attorney for Utah county, said in a statement on Saturday: “When the officers made contact with Mr Hunt, he brandished the sword and lunged toward the officers with the sword, at which time Mr Hunt was shot.”

However, Taylor confirmed to the Guardian on Monday that Hunt was in fact alleged to have lunged at the officers outside a bank several dozen yards away from where he ultimately died. While it was outside the bank that Hunt was first “shot at” by police, Taylor said, it was not clear whether he was struck on that occasion.

The above eyewitness picture has confirmed the official police story as an outright fabrication.

The new account confirmed by Taylor on Monday appears to potentially match with remarks made by a witness to local media shortly after the shooting.

Jocelyn Hansen, who was filling her car at a gas station opposite the bank, has said that seconds beforehand she saw Hunt and the officers in conversation. She said that after taking a photograph of the scene, which showed Hunt smiling and with his hands at his sides, she got into her car in order to leave and then heard gunfire.

“I looked up. There were shots and there was a chase,” she told ABC 4 Utah. “He turned and was running away from the police officers,” Hansen added. She could not be reached on Monday.

The altered official account also follows an angry response by the Saratoga Springs police department to media reports of claims that Hunt may have been shot while running away.

And there is the problem. We need a way to police the police. Police departments are clearly willing to lie or distort the truth to protect their own. Mandatory camera is a start. At least in this case the witnesses are all white so the conservative tea house won't bother trying to dismantle the witnesses one by one.

The part in bold about the autopsy isn't strictly correct. The family's attorney said their autopsy results showed he was shot 6 times in the back. That's not the official autopsy. While I would expect the result to be the same, it doesn't necessarily have to be.

I'd also like to know exactly what was happening when the shots were fired. If the young fellow was running at someone with the sword held high for a killing blow, it was a good shoot. If the fellow was just fleeing, then the cop needs to go to prison.

Given that the Autopsy revealed no exit would, I would say that's highly reliable.

The second scenario would be just bazaar and proven false by the police own lying statement. Witnesses with picture said one second he was smiling with his hands to the side and police around him then suddenly he's running away with the police firing. It would be absolutely bazaar if out of the blue he went from smiling with the police around him to going after random stranger on the street with a sword. Plus the police's first lying report before the pictures came out was that the person lounged at the police. No mention in the report that he was lounging at somebody else.

What perception and reality would you be referring to here?

I see an officer that acted professional and even apologized for the misunderstanding. Then whole incident took just a few minutes. I saw no indication that race came into play.

The firefighter also says that the officer was crouched down when he was confronted, when the video shows that the officer was walking across the street towards him and he never appears to crouch

I'm curious if you see something else? Is the firefighter right in his accusations?

The video pretty closely followed the firefighter's description of the story and Firefighter never claimed that the officer's action during the confrontation was racist and he never said the officer was rude. He just said that he feared for his life. What Jone claim he felt was that the officer stopped him and his kids because he was black. The part would not be revealed through the video would it?

Is the firefighter right in his accusation you ask? He didn't accuse the police of being racist. He said he felt that he was stopped because he was black. Now if the police department wants to clear up that misunderstanding, then all they have to do is reveal the location of the robbery in progress. If it's within a block of the fire department, then yes the entire confrontation is very understandable 10:45 pm at night.
If somehow the reported robbery in progress is 10 blocks away....will then that's different. But according to the news the police chief and the fire department chief are working together to clear up any misunderstanding so hopefully it will all work out at the end.

I don't understand what direction you were trying to steer me towards your video post. For the vast majority of my post on police shooting, my concern has been with our ability to police the police. I also express how I like the initiative of having police officers wear cameras as a start.

You seem to bait me initially with a video of a officer stop recorded on camera. And I agree, cameras works great. We should make officers wear them. Protects the citizens from being shot up.

Then you slip in the race part. Are you by chance trying to test the water and trying to get a feel of how much I sympathize with the blacks in this country regarding police and racism? If that is your curiosity go ahead and ask, no need to probe.

Wasn't trying to bait you... I like how the officer had the camera. I think that will clear up a lot of debates as to what happened during an incident. I guess I was posting for two reasons. One to show that the body cams do work and two to see what people's reaction were to this incident. I suppose I could have articulated that better.

In this case, the report was for a burglary in progress at the fire station.

It doesn't even appear that the officer drew his weapon, just had his hand on it as described by Jones, which wouldn't be inappropriate if he was confronting a burglar.
