Didn't Al Franken write a book called 'Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot'
Guess it is ok to insult the right, but there is hell to pay if you insult the left.

BTW calling Edwards a 'i love you' is a pretty stupid comment, but stupidity does not have a political affiliation, it is non-partisan.
"Big fat idiot" is hardly equal to "lovely human." Even you should know that.
How long do you think it would take me to find some liberal using a similarly offensive term towards a member of the 'right'?
The point is that there are people on both sides who say offensive things.

There are people on both sides who commit murder, but only people like you use that as an apology.

And that makes it ok?

She's scum, and her wild popularity among conservatives says something pretty vile about the right-wing in this country. Yeah, maybe she's not alone with her nutball ideology, but that doesn't make her (or her fans) any less stupid.

And while I'd agree that there are plenty of offensive and stupid liberals out there, I don't think I've seen any popular ones as fundamentally angry as Ann Coulter. In fact, while both sides seem equally gifted with stupidity, the right-wing pundits seem to have a special gift for political rage. Coulter, Malkin, O'Reilly, Hannity, all those folks seem to spend an awful lot of time just screaming about stuff. Their liberal counterparts may be stupid and mean and petty and biased and all that fun stuff, but they don't seem to have the fundamentally pissed off take on everything.

Give it any spin you wish...it was hardly laughter if so it was intermingled with disbelief what she just said...they were not laughing at her comment at all...they wanted nothing to do with her...how does the tin foil hat fit??

Coulter is mostly schtick. Shes trying to sell books. The more books she sells, the more money she makes. The bigger her advances get. The more controversy she riles up the more books she sells.

Its the same way with Bill O'rielly.

You are talking tens of millions of dollars.

Theres not many on this board that would turn down the money, Rush, Coulter or O'rielly make spouting mostly nonsenes to the blind sheep.

You're not being honest at all. Not only was there laughter and applause, a few seconds later when she moved from her speech to questions, applause was very loud.

There was no indication at all they 'wanted nothing to do with her'.

The laughter did have some sound of surprise, but approval as well. She was not booed which would show disapproval.

It doesnt matter if it is an act, she spoils anything that is good about conservatism. Also, this is why Mitt Romney will never be President. By apppearing with her around he just pushes away any actual conservative votes. All he has left are the rabid neocons, roughly the same 20-25 percent that never gave up on Bush while the rest of the actual thinking world did.

Mitt Romney just endorsed the fact that he thinks Edwards is a "lovely human" and that it's "A good thing."

So what "truth" about Edwards being gay would not be "mean spirited"?. Do you think its true he is gay?

If Coulter really thinks Edwards is a ?lovely human? then she should say ?John Edwards is a lovely human.? This would beg the appropriate questions like ?do you think he sexually identifies as gay, or are you using that term of art like a 5th grader would, as a general insult?? Her ?joke? allowed her to call him a ?lovely human? without actually doing so.

That?s cowardly.

I have to say I was nauseous, when I saw the clip ? not when she said what she said, but when the chorus of laughter followed it.

Last year at the same event, she warned Arab "ragheads" about violence that would be done to them and called for Supreme Court justices to be murdered -- and received standing ovations.

Is this really a "spokeswomen" for the "modern" conservitive movement?

The point is that there are people on both sides who say offensive things.

Heh, laughable "apologist" statement...

So Ann Coulter appeared as a featured speaker today at the Conservative Political Action Conference -- the preeminent conservative event of the year.

The single most prestigious political event for conservatives of the year is a place where conservatives go to hear Democrats called faggots, Arabs called ragheads, and Supreme Court justices labeled as deserving of murder -- not by anonymous, unidentifiable blog commenters, but by one of their most popular featured speakers.

And after she does that, she is cheered wildly by an adoring conservative movement that has made her bigoted and hate-mongering screeds best-sellers.

Andrew Sullivan was (I believe) present at this event, and said this about Coulter's speech:

When you see her in such a context, you realize that she truly represents the heart and soul of contemporary conservative activism, especially among the young. The standing ovation for Romney was nothing like the eruption of enthusiasm that greeted her. . . .

Her endorsement of Romney today - "probably the best candidate" - is a big deal, it seems to me. McCain is a non-starter. He is as loathed as Clinton in these parts. Giuliani is, in her words, "very, very liberal." One of his sins? He opposed the impeachment of Bill Clinton. That's the new standard. She is the new Republicanism. The sooner people recognize this, the better.

Wasn't Sullivan one who himself admitted to being gay?...pathetic

Anyone who went to this event - and that includes Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and Dick Cheney - knew exactly what they would be getting. Coulter's face was prominently plastered on the promotional material. The right-wing political candidates who accepted the invitations to speak there knew exactly the type of people would be there - namely, the type who continously cheer on Ann Coulter's bigoted and nakedly hateful screeds. Anyone who makes themselves a part of that event is purposely associating themselves with those sentiments. That is what this Conference is for.

If this is the "new" republican creed, I worry what these folks will do if (when) they lose in '08.

This (money)should not be a "get out of jail free card", but..at least you have a grasp of reality...

Ann Coulter is many things, but dumb is not one of them. She is extremely savvy and has propelled herself into a lucrative career by correctly assessing what it is she can (so ably) say and write that pushes the envelope among normal and civil people, but which reflects the sentiments the GOP base is too afraid to publicly utter but which they long to have validated.

They feel liberated when she speaks (hence wild cheering) and writes; she knows that. No matter that a right-wing blogger here or there will rebuke her or that she can't convince NR to publish her more extreme stuff and so leaves there in a snit (but Town Hall will take her as will David Horowitz); she is popular at CPAC and other important right-wing events. Her puerile books sell like hotcakes and stay on the NYT Bestseller list.

She has this schtick down to a very well-compensated science.

This statement also goes beyond Anne Coulter to get at a number of crucial features of the perverted, sadistic and radicalised version of "conservatism" that has dominated American politics ever since Newt Gingrich.

The driving, indelible sense of paranoia and persecution at the heart of the movement; the central role of an incredibly amorphous notion of "Political Correctness" - ubiquitous, insidious, and capable of manifesting itself in an infinite variety of ways in every sphere of life -- as the perceived source of the persecution and as motivating force for the masses and their masters alike.

The importance of a careful and elaborate division of labour in the right-wing media and propaganda machine, with specific roles and degrees of freedom assigned to each component; the deliberate in-your-face, up-yours, so-sue-me confrontational quality of Administration policy and tactics; the b*tch-slap tactic for publicly dealing with the Democrats.

The refusal ever to back down, to admit error or defeat, and the conviction that to do so is to display craven and fatal weakness; ... and, ultimately, the resulting fanatical devotion and loyalty that the Bush Administration inspires in its adherents and apologists.

There is a cult-like spirit of the Bush Follower, and even perhaps scientistic references to psychological entities like "authoritarian personalities", but I think one can be far more specific, and say a lot more, about the mechanisms and unconscious forces which drive this spirit.

Perhaps the single biggest reason why the Bush Administration, and the movement which it epitomises, inspires the kind of blind devotion it does.

Its adherents feel liberated when the Bush Administration speaks and acts, when it gives the world the finger and goes ahead and does whatever the hell it wants to do (the more opposition the better); it is this more than anything else that earns it their fervent reverence, and that suffuses them with the sense of righteous validation and of indomitable power that they crave.

No longer do we need to hide what we think, to watch what we say! exults the Bush Follower.

We are the power now! We can say whatever we want, act with impunity. get away with anything. Reality is as we say it is, and the rest of you can lick your wounds and whine from the sidelines.

Remember when Obama said that the fallen troops' lives were wasted? The Bushco. foot soldiers were personally outraged - Obama was not supporting the troops. McCain says the exact same thing on Letterman, and refuses to apologize for it, and...where is the outrage? Nothing from Rush or Sean or the gang?

This feigned outrage of pundits, is part of the dishonest discourse that is turning true fiscal conservitive republicans (myself included) off from this "new" & "modern" republican politics.
