It's not so bad. It literally does help you catch up with people/reconnect. I found my best friend from Kindergarten who moved away way back when and we caught each other up.

I really have absolutely no desire to "catch up" with any of the assholes from my school days, save maybe my best friend from growing up. And if I really wanted to try there I would call his parents and get his phone number. I've determined that pretty much all of my "friends" from school were total fuckwads and aren't worth the effort to find again. In fact, I'd prefer that those individuals have absolutely no way to contact me ever again.

That is really a sad place to be. This seems to be the more fault of your own life and not that of Facebook - or any social media.

Who's to say he hasn't met better people now?

I have a similar disposition as he does - I have no need to "catch up" with the Cool Kids from high school. I have adult friends now, they're better than the high school jackasses, thus I have no need to rehash my past.

Life does, or did, I guess, go forward, not in circles.

Well since you two are in the same crowd I can understand your sympathizing with him. You guys need to go to counseling.

I'm not blaming Facebook for it. It's not really that sad though, as I've gone through life since school realizing what real friendship is thankfully. I'm not a tremendously social type of person. And not for lack of attempts, but I will say that my attempts to keep up with whom I thought were friends after we parted ways were met with the truth. And yeah, the truth hurts.

It's more of a punishment thing I suppose. Stupid as it sounds... I really don't have any desire to let individuals from my past see how good my life is these days, and come try to rain on my parade with their sob stories or their fake bubbly cheerleader lifestyle.

And the last thing I want is a million reunion invites from people I care nothing of.

Yup - I'm an asshole that way.

I don't know - I found it funny that on a serious show like Criminal Minds they actually mentioned "oh you're on facebook? You should totally friend me..."

I honestly don't care if it's uncool as long as they keep it the way it is and not allow fake names, flashing pages, wacked backgrounds, or music auto-loading.

I'm not denying it. :)

With that said... other than my expressed opinions about the topics given - are there any other uses for facebook that make it worth ... anything?

I'll friend you on Facebook if that would help!

By sad, I am talking about how you described your childhood as effectively surrounded by fuckwads and you essentially closed the door on your past. I am not really sure if there is any other parsimonious way of describing that besides the use a three letter word: sad.

It seems that many people group older acquaintances into two primary categories: (1)Those that I like and I still keep in touch with -and- (2) People that suck and I don't want to hear from. I do not understand why so many people choose not to have a third category of persons that they are interested about, but are neither crazy close friends nor are they fuckwads to stay away from.
I have re-connected with many acquaintances that I would not call friends, but it is neat to find out how things have gone in the past 13 years since high school. I found one guy that lives relatively close to me which is sort of neat since we both moved from Texas to the mid-Atlantic area.

In the end, if some folks are anti-social, then so be it. To each their own.

it's pretty good for planning events / inviting people. there are a bunch of apps you can add such as games, etc. there are apps for pretty much every hobby / interest. you can join "groups" that are relevant to your interests. i guess aside from the actual "friend" thing, it can still be a useful site, even if your friend list is 0. for example, this weekend I joined the Alexander Keith's (beer) group. i didn't need any friends to do it, and i still think it's pretty cool because i got to see pics of hot Keith's chicks in skimpy clothing.

I created 10 random accounts and befriended myself on facebook. I use those from time to time to write on my own wall to make myself look more popular

There was a recent article in one of the magazines that tracks emerging trends in younger businesses. Apparently, it's becoming more and more common to use facebook and other social networking services in a business setting. The suggestion was that even if you didn't want to devote time to it, get the account, and simply keep crap off of it. i.e. when all the addicted people send you <logs into facebook> requests to join them in mafia wars, help them find and hatch eggs, treasure hunts, pirate vs ninja battles, etc., just click "ignore." Oh, and those pictures of you downing a 12-pack of beer last weekend - keep those pictures off it too.

hey nerd, how's life in the bitter barn? how close are you to going postal and offing all of the "cool" people at work? :p

You can do better than that, can't you?

The point I'm making is I don't need Facebook and don't want it. I do just fine with social interaction on my own. I would submit that people who need and/or feel more comfortable integrating Facebook into their "social" life need far more help than I/SunnyD do.

I'm fine with where I am. Anyone who thinks less of me because I feel no need to maintain a facebook identity to catch up with...well, with people like you, they're welcome to feel that way. I'll be off enjoying my in-person time with people who enjoy my actual company.

For what? I have dozens of healthy relationships with friends, family, co-workers, etc....and all of them in real life too, not on the web. Shocker!
