I checked my email like always this morning, one netflix notice and then something else in my inbox, probably another stupid spam ad.

Nope... it was a former coworker/boss... and in it was a Facebook invite/request. Gah... the Borg found me! Damnit!

(Note: Borg = Facebook, not coworker. The Coworker dude is a pretty cool guy honestly...)

Seriously, nobody gives a shit that you aren't on facebook.

Don't lie to him.

People will think less of you in a social capacity when they ask "Hey are you on Facebook" and when you say no its interpreted as "No, I don't like being contacted because I'm a backwards social fucktard".

So, accept it, and welcome to the collective. 🙂

So will Facebook get me fame, fortune and females?

If so, then I may be tempted to shed my "backwards social fucktard" skin!

just join. once you join you will realize that it's not so bad. i used to poke (no pun intended) fun @ facebook and everyone who used it. but it's pretty neat as far as social networking sites go.

Hmm... now that Facebook has gone mainstream and almost everyone I know under the age of 60 is on it, is it now considered cool to NOT be on Facebook?

It's not so bad. It literally does help you catch up with people/reconnect. I found my best friend from Kindergarten who moved away way back when and we caught each other up.

I really have absolutely no desire to "catch up" with any of the assholes from my school days, save maybe my best friend from growing up. And if I really wanted to try there I would call his parents and get his phone number. I've determined that pretty much all of my "friends" from school were total fuckwads and aren't worth the effort to find again. In fact, I'd prefer that those individuals have absolutely no way to contact me ever again.

I never realized it was considered 'cool' to begin with. 😛

And I thought I had it rough in school. I'm sensing a little un-dealt-with anger here...

Or, "I'm not on Facebook because then the type of people that like being on Facebook could get in touch with me, and I have real things I need to do with my life, rather than waste time every day participating in a make-believe high school clique on the internet."

You see, if we lost contact in the first place, it's because I don't:

a) Like you
b) Give a fuck about you
c) Both

If I want to remain in contact with someone, they'll know how to reach me or I'll know how to reach them, likely both. If I don't want to remain in contact with you, you won't be able to remain in contact with me.

If I don't call/email/visit/etc on a regular basis, take the hint.

I finally caved and joined Facebook about two weeks ago.

It really isn't all that bad, and I would daresay sort of fun. I previously had a MySpace account; I loathed and found no enjoyment at all on MySpace and as such had no desire to join Facebook. A couple of my friends sent me invites and I am now unemployed so I thought what the hell.

It really isn't too bad.

Here is a Slate article making a decent argument on why you should be on Facebook and/or other social networking applications. It makes a somewhat reasonable argument; it's worth a quick read.

That is really a sad place to be. This seems to be the more fault of your own life and not that of Facebook - or any social media.

I retract my recommendation. Don't join.

Who's to say he hasn't met better people now?

I have a similar disposition as he does - I have no need to "catch up" with the Cool Kids from high school. I have adult friends now, they're better than the high school jackasses, thus I have no need to rehash my past.

Life does, or did, I guess, go forward, not in circles.
