Looks like nvidia got it right this time, good job guys. I wish I could afford a new graphics card.

EDIT: w/r/t DoomIII, didn't the alpha use ati & nvidia specific rendering paths? I thought Carmack said the final game would only have 1 dx9 class rendering path that both R300 and NV35 use. I wouldn't trust this benchmark yet, but it seems the NV35 is doing great elsewhere.

Yup, This ninny was bound to show up sooner or later...GTAphile must have been traumatized by some nVidia product during childhood or something.

Strange how people can get so attached to inanimate objects / brands (especially when they hold no stock in said product). Jeez, it's a video card, whoo hoo I can get an extra 50 FPS in a game that doesn't even exist yet (see also: Doom III).

Sure it's cool that the technology keeps escalating (I am sure that I will be replacing either my 8500LE or my GF4 ti4400 soon), but the inevitable flame wars that are about to spring up are unfortunate and boring.

Ease up folks...

 
Until now, ATi always came out as the winner in direct image quality comparisons that used single-frame screenshots. NVIDIA's apologetic explanation was that the GF FX's filtering was originally optimized for moving scenes, not for single frames. The new driver solves this "problem" and is supposed to offer good quality even in still frames. In Quality mode, the entire scene is filtered trilinear anisotropic, whereas Performance reverts to bilinear anisotropic. ATi's driver works in a similar manner.

Yet the Detonator FX driver's improvements go beyond image quality refinement. It also enhances performance of all GeForce FX cards even with image quality enhancements disabled.

Since the Ultra's design isn't even finalized yet I wonder when we'll actually start seeing cards in stores...

I know they say that they're going to start ramping production in mid june...but that's just for the GPUs

I hope that they can actually get some boards out in July sometime...
 
If the 128MB version of the GeforceFX 5900 overclocks well, then I am going to be picking up that card. Don't really have a need for 256MB of RAM. I can live with spending $400 on a video card. $500 is just way to expensive for a gaming card. It is approching workstation pricing.
 
I don't think I can wait until July. I truely hope to see these things go retail by June but that may be wishful thinking. I have owned very few ATIs (I had a rage pro once and another but I can't remember the name), and I did not care for them too much, but I can definately picture myself with a 9800 pro. If Nvidia wants my buisness and the buisness of many others in the market right now, then thisthing had better hit the shelves soon.

Not likely. They're supposed to go into mass production (in quantity) in mid-june. That's just the GPU itself though. They haven't even finalized the design of the 5900 Ultra yet. (the one we've seen isn't finalized) and then they have to produce the boards themselves. You'll be lucky to see one on a shelf by mid-july.
 
I think the real victim here is DDR-II and how crappy it really is. Nvidia has moved from DDR-II to a DDR-I memory platform as a solution to its bandwidth problems.
 
Neither side is the king 😛 im sure a clocked up 9900pro is in the works now, after all the 9800s overclock very well so they have a lot of yeild room.
 
Yes. Nvidia's 5900Pro .13u is beating ATI's 9800 Pro .15u by a narrow margin. ATI can certainly match the memory bandwidth. Not long until we see a smaller process and high clock speeds from the ATI camp...

I`m sure Nvidia are working on the NV40 ,but you`re right it`s a never ending battle between the two companies,no video card remains top dog for long, it`s good news for us since both companies are offering us choices so we win eitherway ,I just wish we had more companies trying to get into the battle.

Don't forget that the ATI is using a much faster RAM. The GeforceFX 5900 Ultra GPU can support DDR-I or DDR-II so if NVIDIA wanted to, they could release a GeforceFX 5900 Ultra with DDR-II when it drops in price and use much faster memory.

So can the radeon 9800. ATI has had working "DDR-II" cards for some time. Both companies can produce DDR-II cards quite easily. Judging from that cooling monstrosity I'm not sure how much headroom Nvidia has left in that design. They could have a lot. I know that ATI does. They have yet to migrate to .13u for their high end GPU. If you think that Nvidia has taken the crown and there's no chance that they'll lose it in the future, you're mistaken.

I thought it was great when the P10 and Parhelia were on the way, turns out the P10 project died, but the Parhelia-512 was a great offering at its time, with insanely good IQ and triple monitor support. If the company stayed with the Parhelia design and clocked it up, it would be a real nice competitive card. (not anymore but 6mos ago)

ATi and NVIDIA are both sampling GDDRIII as an alternative to DDRII as well. I'm hearing a lot about sub-par DDRII performance due to an increase in latency. (correct me if im wrong)
