I am going to run as many servers as humanly possible, since the bandwidth is "free" I need to be conservitive also the game info site, stats and such will be branded with the ISP's name on all pages and links to get the services we offer. tho I sit on dual OC3's I can't use all of them all the time ;). so if games use high amounts of bandwidth (like BF1942) then we need to look at how best to approach setting up such a server as to not impact the other services provided here. maybe thats reducing the ammount of players, capping the connections ect... it will all get worked out.

I would like to note that we don't pay by the amount we use, we are on a flat rate system so that works to our benifit.

Games I'm planning on hosting (IF POSSIBLE)
UT
UT 2K3
America's Army
Counter Strike
BF 1942
Tribes 2

TFC? You could host it on the same server as the CS server. :D

How about only Anandtech Subscribers get to play on the server? That way the amount of trolls will be limited and we will be supporting Anandtech in the process. I for one would definately become a subscriber if I got game server privilages from it. Trolls can always be banned too (ip address). I'm sure theres lots of people like me and rpc64 that would like to be able to play on the server too.

Sounds like a great idea! I like the idea of AT people only playing, that eliminates the cheating. If anyone does try to cheat, they'll be ridiculed for life around here.

I'd be willing to lend some money, but no hardware.

In a couple of days once everything seems to get panned out and it actually looks like it might come together, I can throw in $10 bucks or a little more to help the cause.

Yes I would like to be able to play on the server. But I am too poor right now to be a subscriber. I suggest that narzy just give access to people who post in this thread and are known to not be trolls or asshats.

Someone finally came up with a way to force me to become a subscriber.

EDIT: $30 a year!!! For some reason I was thinking it was like $15. Not sure if I like this idea anymore.

Maybe because some of us are opposed to being subsribers.
Anandtech.com makes quite enough money I'm sure. I dont see the point in padding anyones pockets anymore then they already are.
Running a game server is a different story though. You dont get advertising money. You dont get equipment or vendor support. Its ALL on the owner. So, why would limiting it to ATOT Subsribers help an ATOT member pay the bills.?? You give the money to Anandtech, but narzy has to pay??

[shameless] If someone wanted to buy something from my FS thread I could send it to whoever is hosting the server. I'll cut a good break if it's for this cause. Even if you had a bunch of people chip in portions to make up the total payment that would work. :) [/shameless]

what kind of motherboard do you need? List the CPU's that we have been offered so that we can try to fit in the best motherboard for it :)

Also, I could donate a power supply, but I'm not sure how good of a power supply it is. It came used with the Coolermaster case I bought, but i replaced it with an enermax. You'd probably be better off even buying a cheapie tower for like $30 with the psu in it already~ cost of shipping this thing might outweigh its usefulness

I'd want to know what my link would be like before I'd become subscriber just to play there.

In RtCW you can reserve places for for example clan members, so that 'non-certified' players are limited, and that a clan member can always log on. Wouldn't that be an idea, to set it up so you have a 64 player server of which 40 or 50 places are reserved for the subscribers (or more/less, depends on how many are needed), and that you still can have non-subscribers playing? (Limited though, and can get kicked if their place is needed for a subscriber)

This way people would be able to play on the server and possibly get interested in ATOT to get an account on the server.

On the note regarding running as many game servers as possible. This might not be a good idea.

AFAIK, servers are a little processor intensive. Obviously bandwidth will not be a problem. I'm not saying we can't run a lot of server, but I think a little testing is in order to find out which servers are processor hogs and what can/can't drag down the box.

If one server is a processor hog, alternatively, so it can still be run (and depending on its popularity of use), the server could start that game server and run it for only certain (peak) times during the day and turn others off. Kinda like timesharing the box. This way, everyone gets to use the box and we don't experience a performance hit.

Also, we will obviously benefit from a multi-proc board with an OS that supports it. Going back to my offer, the quad 200Mhz Pent Pro should be fine for most dedicated servers for even a multiple of games. The only thing, like I mentioned is buying 3 more VRMs for the other processors and finding a chassis that will fit it's form factor. (I don't remember what it is, prob an extended ATX)

:)

HOw about UO? That would be cool. Also I hate the idea that Id have to be a subsciber or a golden member, maybe the limit should be at Senior Member. That would remove all the people that arent members AT or inactive.

I would donate but I donated already for the Beowulf project on DC forum.

Its seems that this project is in deep need of MBs Someone should donate one or two.

Don't put it on RedHat... I vote for Debian. I'm more than willing to donate some Debian CD's, but seeing as people are willing to donate cd-r's and you've got so many oc-3's backing you up, I'm sure you'll manage ;) With that in mind, I'm more than willing to help wherever possible.

Could you add natural-selection to the list? It's too damn hard to find a good NS server.

I agree and is something that I am going to look into extensively.
