TFC? You could host it on the same server as the CS server.Originally posted by: narzy
I am going to run as many servers as humanly possible, since the bandwidth is "free" I need to be conservitive also the game info site, stats and such will be branded with the ISP's name on all pages and links to get the services we offer. tho I sit on dual OC3's I can't use all of them all the time. so if games use high amounts of bandwidth (like BF1942) then we need to look at how best to approach setting up such a server as to not impact the other services provided here. maybe thats reducing the ammount of players, capping the connections ect... it will all get worked out.
I would like to note that we don't pay by the amount we use, we are on a flat rate system so that works to our benifit.
Games I'm planning on hosting (IF POSSIBLE)
UT
UT 2K3
America's Army
Counter Strike
BF 1942
Tribes 2

How about only Anandtech Subscribers get to play on the server? That way the amount of trolls will be limited and we will be supporting Anandtech in the process. I for one would definately become a subscriber if I got game server privilages from it. Trolls can always be banned too (ip address). I'm sure theres lots of people like me and rpc64 that would like to be able to play on the server too.

On the note regarding running as many game servers as possible. This might not be a good idea.
AFAIK, servers are a little processor intensive. Obviously bandwidth will not be a problem. I'm not saying we can't run a lot of server, but I think a little testing is in order to find out which servers are processor hogs and what can/can't drag down the box.
If one server is a processor hog, alternatively, so it can still be run (and depending on its popularity of use), the server could start that game server and run it for only certain (peak) times during the day and turn others off. Kinda like timesharing the box. This way, everyone gets to use the box and we don't experience a performance hit.
Also, we will obviously benefit from a multi-proc board with an OS that supports it. Going back to my offer, the quad 200Mhz Pent Pro should be fine for most dedicated servers for even a multiple of games. The only thing, like I mentioned is buying 3 more VRMs for the other processors and finding a chassis that will fit it's form factor. (I don't remember what it is, prob an extended ATX)
