Does anyone know of good web-based software to manage their respective Gave Server software. This will obviously make it easier to manage the game servers running on the computer. For the time being, I have surplus web space and BW that I'd be willing do donate as well to the cause. I can offer this at no cost for now. If that changes, I'll bring up the issue at a later date with sufficent advance notice of change. (So you don't have to worry about losing the site unexpectedly if you decide you'd like to use my space.)

My main question is what will happen when you leave this place? I'm assuming after the summer.

I have a Celeron 466 and a Duron 600 if either of those might come in handy. :D

I've also setup both CS and TFC on a linux server before, so I can handle helping with that.

I am hoping to extend my stay to a more perminent situation but I have been assured I can keep the game server there indefinatly.

everyone needs to hurry up and send him their stuff so it can be set up, I think it's the time to brush the dust off my UT CDs (and UT2K3 because I havent played it in a while either).

I know it's been addressed somewhat but I wanted to also say that allowing people access based upon a set number of posts would be a bad idea. There are plenty of people here who are golden after just a few months because all they do is posts on OT. There are also others like me who only do a handful of longer and more "effort" required posts and it takes years to become golden, this is why I kind of think sheer post numbers is a bogus figure for anything. Once more it would be a PITA to admin.

Way to go Narzy!

If the games are very processor intensive to serve, is it maybe possible to have more than one box? Or are you restricted to just one box? It seems like lots of people have processors to donate is the reason I am asking.

Some game servers are, some aren't. We're trying to setup a Multi Proc box so it can handle more than one game server running at a time more easily. Like I mentioned before, if anyone can measure perfomance hit, or processor time certain game servers use so we can guesstimate which server would work well together, etc.

1. there have been other AT game servers. They usually taper off after a week or so.

2. there are lots of good servers already out there

3. we're still waiting for T-shirts, so how long will a server take?

Didn't you ever listen to your mommy when she said "If you can't say something nice (or in the case productive/helpful), don't say anything at all."

ah heck off.

this thread is dumb. narzy is bored at work so he wants everyone to send him computer parts and money so he can occupy his time setting up a game server. And somehow that merits a sticky. And if narzy has all this free time, where are these "official" at t-shirts he's been talking about for years?

Zap didn't beg for parts to host a server... he built it, put it online and the CBF emerged.

I agree that a server is a good idea (well, if it's running bf1942 with road to rome maps), but the way this is emerging is just dumb. And the idea of having 5 games running on the server at once is uber-dumb. [is that helpful enough for you?]

all vs you

Why are you so bitter about this?:confused::confused::confused:

I am not restricted to one box, I never planned on running 5 servers on one box, but I do plan on running multiple servers per box, NOT to do that is stupid.
I'm not defending myself or this project to one person. if you don't like it, don't play on it, if I see your face on the box after its up I'll be sure to let everyone know what kind of person you are. a friggin thread crapping hypocrite.

He's asking for parts, but supplying a very nice connection in return. I don't understand why you have a problem with someone providing a very highspeed connection in order to get a game server up and running, but asking that the community this game server will benefit from for some parts to get the server up and running.

He's not begging, he's just asking for help to do something a lot of us would like to do, but don't have the connection available like he does. I don't know why you expect him to do it all himself so that the rest of us can just leech off of it.

And you are, bitter. If you weren't bitter, then you'd just ignore the thread like the others that haven't posted in here.

Why don't you just let us do something that makes us happy and not crap all over it?

ok, fine. I'll take the stick out of my butt now. Narzy sent me a PM that cleared some things up. Maybe he can pull this off, despite the failed efforts of those before him. Maybe AT can get its act together like Ars.

go narzy!

If narzy wants to build himself a server for the benevolent benefit of all, that's totally cool. Asking for people to give him donations to build a server because he's bored is not (IMHO). If he wants to start selling t-shirts with "nef" "another dead kitty" or other colorful forum-inspired phrases for $10 to help pay for a server, I'll buy one.

I guess i'm a jaded conservative... I'll give 10% of may paycheck away to charity, but you'll never see me give a healthy adult male begging on the street corner a dime.

Meh, I'm never going to use the drive that I'm going to give him anyway. Either I can give it to him, or let the spiders and dustmites take it over.

I thought I might be able to help you out a little in terms of requirements as to whats needed to run a gameserver box. My friend runs Gamedaemons (well, actually they just got bought out), and he runs somewhere around 6 to 8 games on each server (40+ total servers). each of them have a dual MP setup, 15k rpm scsi drives in raid1, and 2gb of ram. Just put this in perspective when you start thinking about how many games you want to be running at one time without expecting it to lag. If you have any more questions, you can PM me and I'll pass it along to my friend.

I've got some f/w SCSI drives and a 7-bay drive tower to put them in. I can probably come up w/ a PCI RAID controller to run them. (RAID 1, 5, whatever).
I also have some nics, scsi cables, and other assorted parts, if you need them.

I may have a rack-mount SCSI drive cage, if you really need it (and I can work it out).

Narzy, looking at your sig, it says you're in Oregon.
Is this server going to be in Oregon too?
