Well looks like ATI got it right in the poop shoot today. The 512MB 7800GTX trounces everything, and by a pretty healthy margin. All hail the king!
As predicted, the extra 256MB does virtually nothing for high res; it's all about the boost in bandwidth (1700 MHz vs 1200 MHz), and the core clockspeed increase.
While this is most definitely an emphatic victory for Nvidia, at $700, the 512MB 7800GTX hardly "flushes ATI's margins down the toilet" as someone in this thread said. Who here besides Rollo is going to buy one or two of these cards? As if this card even competes with the X1800XL (which IMO is a crappy deal anyways @ $400 since the 7800GT can be had for around $300), or even the X1800XT ($550-600). With that said, I don't see much of a point in getting the X1800XT these days if you can find a 512MB 7800GTX.
So, Nvidia has set two standards with this card: one in performance, and another in price. A drool-worthy video card for those who buy it; I'm sticking with my 7800GT, for which I paid less than half of the sticker price of a 512MB GTX 😉 .
Hopefully (but probably doubtfully), next generation returns to more sane price levels. When $400 was the top for a video card, it was at least manageable; $500-700 per card plus SLI is making consoles look more and more attractive, since they at least last 3-5 years!

while something to consider and certainly worth looking into, i don't put any cedence into anything DH says, and haven't for some time...
still, i think that's kind of a desperate "reach", as unless either card remains in the "low/min" fps area for a reasonable amount of time, it really makes no difference in playability.
while the "performance crown" is easily won by nvidia's 512mb offering, just as i stated when x1800xt was vying for that spot, paying a premium for 512mb (or $700 for a video card, period) makes it a non-factor except for bragging rights. 98% of gamers simply cannot justify such an expense (and some of us who could, but won't just out of principle of not "throwing away" money).
frankly, i'd still buy a 7800gtx or even a 256mb x1800xt (if they actually ship) before one of these - even if it does spank the competition.

X800XT load = 246
GTX 512 load = 274
GTX 512 consumes 28W more
AT:
X1800XT load = 262
GTX 512 load = 284
GTX consumes 22W more
This to me is not a mirror but indicates discrepancies. No telling which site is correct or incorrect.
I kind of like Toms graphs only because it shows power usage for each card under many games. Interesting way to do that.

We already know ATi is going to counter, as they've authorized a core/mem bump on their cards, but for the numbers we're talking about, they're going to need more than a 25MHz bump here and a 25MHz bump there. It's not going to cut it.

Hmmm thats a good thought! even with school if I can sell my 7800GT for like 300 and I wait for my 3(!!) dollar an hour pay raise in january by that time the price will have dropped and I can easily afford one then....but anyways for the time being I'll be jealous of you 😛
