AMD will retire the ATI brand

Sounds good to me...too many brands can confuse...However...

Most people ask for "Radeon" or "geforce". Keep the radeon name at all costs. AMD Radeon sounds great. Could actually help to cross market a bit.

Edit: just want to qualify that I've NEVER heard people at a store telling a customer (like at fry's or best buy or w/e) "you need to look for ati graphics" or "get this one it has nvidia graphics"...it's always "you want a geforce card so gaming doesn't suck" or "make sure it has a radeon".

So changing ati to amd? Good. Then stick to that damn thing and then *find and for god's sake stick to something consistent for your CPU's and start making non-crappy marketing slogans for them*

If AMD ever ditches the ATI name, it would have to be after AMD releases a stellar CPU product or risk the stigma attached to AMD (rightly or wrongly) of making sub-par crap being attached to their graphics division as well.

I work at a Microcenter, and believe me there are a lot of laymen out there that give me the "Oh, but it has an AMD processor" line as though they just found out that hot girl they're crushing on has herpes.

I certainly havent heard that, as it would be ..too obvious.

And if they did, hey atleast they are out in the open and you really cant miss the "anti nvidia" sign when checking the site. Much more than can be said about past and recent nvidia tactics

I heard that NVidia uses Stem Cells from Aborted Fetuses in the Fermi. I'm not sure if I believe it, but that's what I heard.

Accurately or not, ATi is a brand viewed as going toe to toe with the best in their market while AMD is viewed as a budget company for those who can't afford Intel.

Honestly, it would make more sense for them on a marketing basis to dump the AMD name.

AMD needs mindshare to compete with the large presence Intel has, and to do that it needs a simple and consistent brand, image and message.

Accura, Lexus and Infiniti exist because some of the best marketing companies in the world couldn't overcome the budget stigma attached to their name in broader markets. Sure, for us it isn't going to make a difference if they call themselves Kibbles 'n Bits, but the general public views AMD as a cheap knock off of Intel.

Sorry but I hafta disagree. If you asked an average person on the street they'd be able to tell you that Intel makes computer processors. If you asked an average person on the street who AMD was they'd be like "huh?". That's the problem. That's one of the things that would make it good to get it all under one brand name.

they could make the AMD in "AMD radeon" look a lot like the ATI has already, keep the same font/colors/etc on the graphics cards, and nobody would be able to tell the difference.

I'm willing to bet that outside of a "tech forum" more people have heard of AMD than ATI.

The biggest problem I can see with this is AMD and Nvidia are both corporately colored green. Ati is red. If you retire Ati do you need to turn all the Ati packaging green (in which case everyone will assume it's an nvidia card).

maybe thats what they are going for 😛

proud owner of a 4870

I welcome the change, as long they keep putting out competitive discrete graphics products i dont care if they call it "Red dog boner radeon 6870".

Do you think Intel might prefer not having the AMD logo on PC's with their CPU inside? I can see it now...

"Intel Inside" and AMD too 🙂
