NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. got slammed in afternoon trading on Friday after the company reported a dip in second-quarter revenue, largely due to an aggressive price war with rival chip maker Intel Corp.

If you cant stand the heat, dont play in the kitchen. ;) Conroe not even out yet!

To be fair, things are pretty bad for Intel too but Ill bet they experience a turnaround faster based on the sheer volume of new orders.

Intel got some marketshare stolen, but it wasn't that bad. Things were generally bad for Intel mainly due to the slowdown in PC growth. AMD had nowhere to go but up because of a good chip. Intel had that plus PC growth slowdowns to deal with, and had nowhere to go but down.

AMD can't fight the price wars well, and so its clear they get slammed very easily like now.

AMD is not a good buy yet, and surely won't be given the cpu outlook. Intel if it drops a little bit more will be good to buy

Something is going on. NVIDIA is way down, AMD is way down, ATI is up.

No conspiracy. Its just the market as a whole shaking out. I sold the market in April and bought back in June. Im down about 3% since then, but I think we finish higher by year end.

You are right on; there is a rumour floating around today:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/...0060721.wati0721/BNStory/Business/home

Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is considering a $5.6-billion (U.S.) takeover bid for ATI Technologies Inc., a leading manufacturer of computer graphics chips, sources say.

ATI stock is rising today on rumours that AMD will make a friendly offer of between $21 and $23 as early as next week.

The board of directors at Sunnyvale, California-based AMD have approved a takeover offer, according to an investment banker familiar with the talks. Other sources in the financial industry said AMD executives have been spotted at ATI's Markham, Ont. head office.

Pretty specific info too. And this seems to be driving the shares of these three companies today.

Perhaps you would like to add your particular insight regarding the market conditions for AMD or Intel, which is the subject. Or you could insult the OP and continue to look rather uninformed. Im guessing youll continue with the latter.

And btw, responding is not "bupp"ing.

Har-har. *slaps knee* Maybe I should stay out of the kitchen too, eh?

I am uninformed - grad students don't have enough money to pay attention to the stock market. I know that in tech, stocks are high stakes - they drop, they rise - you ride the wave. I just didn't see the significance of one day - except to re-spark controversy that has become the new vanilla around here.

And if you want to get all F7 - you forgot an apostrophe in your contractions.
