You assume that operating expenses (sales and marketing, for example) don't scale up with revenue.
Half a Billion of gross profit added over what they currently have will make them have a nice profit. If we also include the extra gross profit from the Desktop/Laptop sales of ZEN CPUs/APUs, in the end they could make a nice come back.
What do you mean by bottom line ??

"The bottom line refers to the net income reported at the bottom of the income statement. The income statement has a required layout and, although there are multiple types of income statement layouts, all of them result with net income at the end of the calculations. All income statements begin with sales at the top of the report. The total revenue figure is subsequently reduced by all expenses. Although expenses may be grouped and reported differently, all reductions of income are made to leave the residual income left for company retention or dividend distribution."
ARM doesn't actually do that last part afaik. bit of a distinction. if you're going to go by that strict a definition then apple doesn't make iphones and i think most people would look at you funny if you said that (even if it's technically true).AMD designs processors. Somebody else "makes" them and AMD stamps their name on them.
I guess the point is that intel has their own foundry while AMD chips are made by GF.

Doesn't Samsung?well said. Apart from Intel there is no company which designs and manufactures its own chips. IBM too sold their semiconductor division and are fabless.

Yes, but they sell processors contrary to ARMNeither does AMD![]()
They still make DSP, Microcontrollers and application SoC (Sitara).I was under the impression TI only makes analog circuits now.
I guess Samsung sort of counts. They still license from ARM though so it isn't like they are building from the ground up.
TI makes a lot of mixed signal devices.. analog and digital combined. They also have one of the most succesful microcontroller lines in msp430 and its derivatives. It's the most power efficient MCU you can get pretty much.I was under the impression TI only makes analog circuits now.
AMD very much manufacture their chips themselves, whether they farm out fabbing or not.
Yup.. AMD's chips like everyone else's are manufactured using machinery. It used to say difused in Germany and made in Malaysia on AMD chips back in the days of Athlon64. Zen will be diffused in US and made in Malaysia most likely. Also the owners of GloFo own 10% of AMD.. so even fabbing has its lines blurred depending on how you look at it.man·u·fac·ture

Does this line of conversation seem pedantic and pointless in regards to the topic to anyone else or am I just short tempered today?
Its completely ridiculous I agree! This is what happens when there isn't news to feed hungry minds.Does this line of conversation seem pedantic and pointless in regards to the topic to anybody else or am I just short tempered today?
