@pauldun170

You tried any undervolting yet? For my 24/7 settings, I run everything default, but I have LLC set to the lowest possible setting, and I use a negative voltage offset. Your UEFI should be the same as mine since we're both on Aorus boards. Give it a try.
I haven't tried undervolting. I'll read up on it. Thanks.

PRO tip -> despite what they say in site, for example for BIOS flashing from windows, the crap center is not required, just install the @Bios tool.
Undervolting does indeed work, but You need to test both ST and MT performance. CB20 is good for MT, but takes too long for ST, so use CPU-Z test to get a quick estimate and see if there is no problems with ST performance.
I'd try each offset from -0.025 to -0.1V to see if some are decent.

But honestly this is $$$ problem - i can personally recommend Dark ROCK PRO 4, it is pricey, but easy to install on AM4. Aside from huge size and DRAM height limitations it is incredibly silent and performant.
And people from this forum will recommend myriad of water coolers, some nearly as cheap as 212.

When I did my search for a case, I fortunately kept the DRP4 and Noctua Dseries in mind.
I My main concern with DRP4 is ram clearance. While i did select low height modules to insure clearance isn't a factor I did bump into one post about someone with a issue of having the heat pipes of the DRP4 resting against one of the modules when first slot is populated. I have to revisit my search history to see the details of that persons config or if they simply screwed up.
DRP4 is definitely on my radar.
With the DRP4, are you stuck using be quiet's ecosystem of fans or are the fans on that cooler using standard mount points?

The other candidate is the Noctua D15S

Scythe Fuma 2 is now on the radar. It's going to take forever to make a decision.

Either way, temps are low and another round of benching and gaming and things are pretty good. Got the fan profiles set so the Wraith is pissing me off a little bit less while I take forever picking a CPU cooler.

I used a Gammaxx 400 on a cheap B350 board for testing the 3900x before I put it in the x570 board, and that cooler worked well.

I decided upon a Scythe Grand Kama Cross 3 Rev.B once it was in the x570, and am happy with it. Is a nice cooler for ~$30.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the Fuma 2.
In it's favor were reported quietness and being competitive with the DRP2 and Noctua's. Cheaper and finally it's a bit more friendly to other cases and board layouts. If I ditch this 3900x rig, I can always move the cooler over to a mATX setup.
Worse case scenario is that it sucks and I'll attach it one of the Raspberry pi 4 lying around the house for poops and giggles.

Seeing a Scythe cooler on a Pi4 would be amazing. Pics or it didn't happen.

I was blown away by how good a Tisis cooler passively cooled a i5 8400t. I couldn't get the chip to break 60cel under prime95. This 7700k on the other hand under a 212 likes to hit 70s. Stock no oc at the moment.

I've posted this as a question before I saw this thread, so apologies for the duplication, maybe you guys can assist?

  1. My rig:

    New components:

    3900X @4.35ghz all core OC 1.27v
Asus X570 Crosshair Hero VIII (WiFi)
4x 8gb Patriot Viper Steel 3600mhz C17 (now tweaked but would appreciate any additional advice)
    Arctic liquid freezer II 360
    1TB NVME Boot drive Drive
    2TB Patriot SATA3 SSD

    Clean Win10 install

Existing parts - with Define S case, EVGA Silver 850w psu, MSI RTX2070S

Because I created the OC using the ram preset timings and various other auto overclock features before optimised, I appear to of (probably via any one of the auto options I chose at the start) disabled cool'n'quiet, if I reset to defaults it works so I know I am okay in Windows.

I much prefer the downclocking while idle option (low power modes are helpful) so I am keen to get this operational again (even if I sacrifice the all core OC a bit).

My issue is that I've no idea why it isn't working? I think I've enabled it in the BIOS but I've no idea what setting I've missed that makes it work (again knowing it works in default stock, means it's not a windows power profile issue AFAIK of course).

    Any/all help greatly received.

My current bios as per below

I guess I think that because the clocks or volts do not change, I am on constant 4.35ghz, load or idle.

Just to add on this, if I load up the profile defaults in the UEFI, save and boot up to Windows and run some tests - single core cinebench the cpu voltages leap to about 1.46v, if I run handbrake, voltages are quite high on all core loads of about 4.1ghz - taking into consideration that I need 1,28v for 4.35ghz all core clock (as per above settings in my earlier post) it worried me to see this.

Is that normal behaviour at stock for cpu voltages to leap beyond 1.45v?

If I wanted to leave the profile (except for ram timings and FCLK) at stock, is there a way I can cap the cpu voltage?

I have my 3600 set to 1.375v and run it in override. It's locked to 4.2ghz 24x7. The CPU will not do 4.3ghz in a bench even with 1.4v. It will boot but cannot make it through any benches without crashing. The 3900x is a gravy chip that should be able to either push much higher clocks @ low voltage or high clocks with higher voltage.

As I have said based on AMD strategy. The 3600 is the worst silicon so they throw high voltage at the chips regardless of the binning. It works well. The high end chips are top tier so they should do much better with mhz as well as low voltage.

All done in uefi - Ryzen master was far too overwhelming, I didn't want to touch it.

That probably explains it. I would recommend using Ryzen Master. Even my static overclocks implemented using that tool permit downclocking and reduction of voltage during periods of idle.

Okay, I'll have a look into that, can you recommend a specific guide, I googled and found there's about but just wondered if there's one in particular the majority prefer?

Not really. It's a fairly easy tool once you get into it. Main thing is, when you first try it out, make sure you have your OS and chipset drivers up to date before you install, and don't use it to change any memory settings unless you really want to use that feature.

Use CPU-z to monitor your voltage during stress testing/benchmarks.

Fuma 2 followup.
In terms of layout, easy access to memory and good spacing between the video card.
Install was straight forward. Attach brackets to existing AMD backplate and then its easy to mount. Took under 5 minutes (excluding removal Wraith and tedious task of cleaning up paste fr om Wraith install.)

Super quiet. I'm now annoyed at my NAS because now that thing is the most noticeable fan in the room.
During stress testing in a 20-21c room, CPU struggled to hit 70c and chipset temps dropped 5c. I was able to lower fan speeds in the fan profile and during stress testing it never exceeded 85% fan speed. With relaxed sound profile 72c is the ceiling.
At this rate, the only time the chipset fan is ever going to come on is during startup

Fan list
Thermatake S300 case
Fuma 2
Exhaust fan rear - Antec TrueQuiet 140 140mm
Exhaust fan top - Cooler Master MF200R 200mm
Intake fan - Arctic Cooling P14 140mm (Will likely swap out this one. Not liking the sound profile once it spins up)

If any of your are running an Asrock x470 taichi and 3000 series CPU, what ram are you running and at what speeds? A buddy of mine just picked up an x470 taichi and wants to pop a 3900X in it and was asking for memory suggestions for a 32gb kit (2 or 4 sticks).

All the memory info from Asrock is for Pinnacle Ridge and doesn't list anything for Matisse. Thanks guys.

32gb kit (2 or 4 sticks).

always get 2 sticks and not 4.
The marginal tighter timings are not worth it IMO, over having the possibility to expand more ram should you ever need it.

4x sticks get better bandwidth, with 2x one can get better timings (manually). Marginal gains, as you say, either way for most stuff.

are you sure? That's not how i remember it, unless its changed.

Because to my knowledge 8gb sticks will always have better timings then 16gb sticks.
Also just by nature of 8gb sticks, they overclock slightly better, so its easier to get even better timings off 4 x 8gb sticks then 2 x 16gb sticks.

However the difference is marginal in performance and not even really that noticeable, unless your going after world records and trying to break them ever so by the millisecond.

Also 16gb sticks will have a heck of a lot better resale value, if you decide to go down that route, not to mention they are better recyclable onto the next system, which makes 16gb sticks a heck of a lot better in value.

The only thing i don't see worth it is if you don't pair ram up... like getting a single 32gb over 2 x 16gb, as i know you can get a noticeable performance decrease, not to mention its best to get factory paired ram for compatibility reasons.

Well, the pandemic made this active again (I am stuck work from home all summer).

Looks like there is a new run of 1800X's. Ordered one from Amazon, and now Newegg has them too.

Got a Noctua NM-AM4-L9aL9i to use the Scythe Mugen 2 Rev B on it also.

Grabbed some Crucial 3600 DDR4, maybe above 3200 is possible?

That's . . . interesting. I wonder if these chips are actually Pinnacle Ridge like the 1600AF? FWIW my old launch day 1800x was able to do DDR4-3466 with b-die (DDR4-3733).

That's a little interesting. Hadn't the 1800x disappeared? I'd expect their to still be some Zen1 stuff floating around just for OEM obligations but top of the stack parts wouldn't likely be that. I've said they should start pumping out more 12nm stuff to take the wind out of Intel's sales a bit on the low end. Obviously more 7nm stuff would be better but there's only so much 7nm.
