AMD RYZEN Builders Thread

Do you guys know if the AMD AM4 mount will have CPU coolers facing horizontally this time around (facing ram slots)? That's the one huge thing I hated about the previous AM2/AM2+/AM3/AM3+ heatsink mount. My coolers would blow the hot air back into the case instead of out through the exhaust vent. If it's the same then I'll have to go with an AIO watercooling kit or something (I want to re-use my Core V1 case).

Yeah, between the itx no show, the high ddr4 prices and the possible price gouging at zen prices at launch, ima hold off for a bit.

Yeah price gouging is unfortunately going to happen. Even a so-called 'established' company like Newegg does it quite often themselves. Been there, seen that.

Due to AMD being back the VR scene has been gouging already, prices have gone up $300 in a few weeks for HTC Vive.

I am not so sure it is a good idea to buy DDR4 DIMMS right now for AM4 builds, local source (works for a big distributor) says that AM4 will require tight timings, and while any DDR4 DIMM should work, it will not be optimal at all.

Although I already have a gaming PC I build last month, this is the configuration I am recommending to friends and whoever asks me for a gaming PC in India considering parts, budget and brand availability.

AMD Ryzen R5 1500. Equivalent to Intel Core i5 7500 which I have. Plenty of gaming power for next few years.

Asrock A320M Pro4 motherboard. The layout of this motherboard is very good. You can install a PCIe x1 based sound card without blocking GPU.

2X8 GB DDR4 RAM. MHz will depend on what is the maximum MHz supported by Ryzen R5.

Cooler Master N200 cabinet. You don't need anything more than this to fit this system.

Samsung 960 Evo M.2 x4 SSD. 256 GB for OS and games + 1 TB Western digital Blue HDD for storage.

Sapphire Nitro RX 470 8 GB. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg in India and gives good warranty and after sales service.

SoundBlaster Recon3D/Asus Xonar DX if you want to buy a gaming sound card. You can also stick to good enough onboard sound.

Corsair VS550 PSU. Enough power for this machine.

Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU cooler. The most common + good CPU cooler available in India. Good enough to cool a 65W Ryzen R5 1500 CPU.

LG 23MP68VQ Monitor which has AMD Freesync 45-75 Mhz support.

Users will be able to use this PC for good gaming experience for 3 years easily and they can then upgrade only their CPU + GPU as needed while reusing everything else.

Hopefully DDR4 3000 15-16-16-35 does alright. The cheapest quality 14 CAS versions are nearly a 50% cost increase from the GSkill deal going on now at the egg.

AMD should just go ahead and allow some sort of "buyer's guidance" teaser.

The Deepcool Gammaxx 400 cools better at a similar or lower price than the CM Hyper 212X. I would avoid the VS series from Corsair, at least the models they sell in Asian markets, due to questionable component choice.

^^ thanks it looks like im looking at buying g.skills trident z 3200mh cl14, but need too wait for official info on RAM support. IS 16gb enough for future proofing or should i take 32gb?

Depends on what else you're going to do other than gaming. In my case, I'll be running Linux VMs so 32GB for me.

I have found a nice kit of 2x8GB Corsair 3000Mhz CL15:
B355333927944542B222DE03F87B31F5.ashx

Cheaper than their LPX series which doesn't have LED lighting 🙂
15-17-17-35 @ 1.35 leaves a room for improvement. I hope 😛

So, with RAM on my way, and it being so expensive, new build is unavoidable now.

I would not be surprised if it doesn't support something like 4266 MHz, but if it doesn't support 3200 MHz, that'd be sad.
Maybe through XMP it will, at least I hope it will. Judging by some of the passmark scores it definitely could use that for certain tests.

Question witch RAM is better:

3200mhz CL16 or 2400mhz CL10?

Based on older designs I'm gonna say DDR4-2400 CAS/CL10, but if you manage to fall beyond some arbitrary bandwidth saturation point (for 4c/8t Skylake it was ~DDR4-3200) then the reduction in bandwidth will hurt you in some areas.

For an 8c Ryzen you're actually going to want a fair amount of bandwidth on tap. Not like what you'd want with an APU but close-ish.

You can't oc the a320 boards, and these cpus are unlocked.

I agree but most people I recommend this basic config to don't overclock their PC ever hence A320 chipset is fine. They just buy once and stick to stock clock speeds.

8gb 470 isn't a good option. 4gb 470/ 480 or 8gb 480

While a RX 480 8 GB is a very good option, in India it costs a lot compared to RX 470 at 4/8 GB. A Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 470 8 GB costs as much as a RX 480 4 GB. This is why I am recommending a RX 470 with 8 GB VRAM so that users can still use high quality texture packs.

212 has questionable am4 support, is overrated, and pointless w/o oc.. The wrath stock cooler is good enough for even mild oc's and they can upgrade later if they want.

If Wraith comes bundled with this CPU then indeed a Hyper 212X is not needed. Again, this PC is not meant for overclocking.

The Deepcool Gammaxx 400 cools better at a similar or lower price than the CM Hyper 212X. I would avoid the VS series from Corsair, at least the models they sell in Asian markets, due to questionable component choice.

It depends on availability. Hyper 212X is readily available here. Also, unlike Deepcool the Hyper 212X has continues direct connect for those copper heatpipes.

Is the Hyper 212X even relevant these days? I'm sure I read somewhere that the Wraith cooler performed the same as one, or near enough as to make little difference.

Edit - it's wtftech but;
http://wccftech.com/amd-wraith-cooler-hyper-212-evo/

there's basically nothing in it, including in noise levels, except the wraith cooler is lower profile and er, free.

So I would presume that unless AMD has gone backwards with their cooler design, any non-X Ryzen cpu should be adequately cooled.

Will Ryzen support 3200Mhz DDR4? It could be a waste of money if it doesn't support it.
It might depend on the board, but the Asus Hero does support 3200+.

MSI claimed to have the best memory support in a Q & A they did recently. I am not sure how they would know that...

Anyways, the price difference between 3200 3000 and 2400 really isn't that much. So, the risk would be minimal.
