$500 I9 9900K vs 2700X. i9 was about 20% faster overall in gaming. But the 2700X ended up selling for $150. You could have bought the Ryzen, then later upgraded to a 5800X3D in 2023 for $240 or so and still had money leftover from the i9 cost. That's unadjusted dollars. The 3D is roughly 40% faster than the i9. There are games when you stop relying on the lazy geomean where it is much faster yet.
Convenience. Swapping out a CPU versus having to swap boards out and usually do a new OS install.
I am just going to post this poll when someone claims longevity does not matter. 37K+ votes in, and I don't expect the percentages to change as more voters weigh in.
