As for a cooler, what's the least I can get away with for the moment? I'd like to upgrade to a 240mm AIO but don't want to pick up anything before they ship with AM5 forward mounting hardware (or tell me I'm nuts and AM4 mounts will work on AM5).
Noctua is great with offering new adapters for newer sockets (heck, I went from an Intel socket 1366 to an AM4). I don't know how well the AIO sellers do on compatibility.

Flashed Beta F1 BIOS - Update to AMD ComboAM4PIV2 1.2.0.3b

They fixed the stuff they broke.
Nothing else noted yet.

The new 3DM CPU benchmark fails on my All Core O/C.

wtf score

Would have been nice to have a CPU benchmark separated from the Time Spy.

I just got a new 5950X workstation a few days ago (from employer), and I'm wondering if there's a way to lower the idle power consumption. OCCT is reporting between 50-60W package power on the CPU using the balanced power plan in Windows. I was getting 100-110W idle before installing Ryzen Master, no idea what was happening there (and yeah, just background tasks, 1-2% utilization). Cool'n'Quiet is on in the BIOS, and besides installing Ryzen Master I haven't made any changes to CPU settings.

I'm running two PCIe-4 NVME drives, and all four DIMMS are populated for a total of 128GB DDR4 @ 3600MHz, so that may be pushing the IOD a bit. OOCT is reporting about 30-ish Watts on the cores and 20-ish on the SOC.

Is there a way to, say, lower the idle clocks without also lowering boost?

Memory performance in win11 looks normal or even better than with Windows 10 :)

Some numbers: Aida memory latency also dont look to shabby for a dual CCD 5950x @ 1900:3800 IF speeds with zero WHEA errors
There is something wrong with how Aida64 reads the L3 numbers in Windows11... But aida is a synthetic app and its real performance in real programs that should matter

  • 5950x @ 4700/4600 static OC, SMT enabled
  • 4x8GB memory sticks
  • Hwinfo open
  • Windows 11
  • Flat CL 14-14-14-14 timings
T1 setup-time
19819.2 H/S over 15min run
upto 629 H/S per core

stabil-testing-4.JPG
Good numbers in dram calculator also

SotTR 306-2.JPG
Record numbers in SofTR without even pushing, 306 game cpu fps

1624798911781.png
Some numbers for the Sandra inter thread efficiency benchmark, but i dont really know this benchmark very well and cant say if these are good or bad numbers.

stabil-testing-6.JPG
Intel memory latency checker = 54.6k in stream-triad like

Running some stability testing atm so i can put that 51.5NS memory latency numbers in aida64 on the google Zen ram overlock doc
Will run a Intel(R) Memory Latency Checker benchmark afterwards.. Let me know if anyone want to see some other benches.

Zen idle clock is 0MHz in other words core gets powered down when it's idling. You can't lower it and most monitor applications can't report idle clock because core is shutdown. Some of them keep cores awake by polling them for clock speed(newest OCCT didn't). If a core is using more than 0W(0.05-0.1W), then it's doing something and not actually idling. My 5800X's cores drops 1.5W at lowest, 5950X should be double of it. Anything waking them up will increase power consumption, even as trivial as active web pages in browser. I'd start from checking what's using CPU time and also make sure newest AMD chipset drivers are installed. 30W just on cores sounds like they don't get to idle. SOC power looks normal for dual chiplet zen3 + 4 dimms.

But i think im getting some pretty good cpu scores :)

Doing some rocket science and picked up a 5950X. How are my temperatures looking? Do I need to re-paste the U14S? CPU at stock settings with PBO off.

Hmm when I ran 3dmark on the X99 system with windows 11, it did not detect hardware correctly. Are you using a different version of win 11, or is it something else? https://www.3dmark.com/spy/21165041

Your score is hidden?

I had to uninstall and install the following to get it reading the hardware correctly on my WIn 11 install.

Hmm i have no problems with hardware not being detected.. what software version are you running ?
1625088914620.png

The only annoying part for me is that there is no "ms paint" or "notepad" in this version, and i cant install it from ms store either since os is not released yet.

Btw are you sure you didn't click "hide results" on the 3dmark page by mistake?

No, peak temp of 70C is pretty good.

Hmm I didn't hide it, I will check my account settings if possible. I will try the reinstall then. Thanks. I forget the exact version of windows 11, but I got the leaked ISO to try.

Critique a build here?

5800x

Mainboard

Cooler

Ram
(CL16-18-18-36, 1.35 V)
Something special I'd go for here for that 1:1 sweetspot?

Be stuffing some old drives, existing PSU (5 years old, should I replace?)

I reckon that all mainboards are Ryzen3 ready by now right?

5800X for gaming? YES!

MPG X570 GAMING PLUS - Looks like a good board for gaming. No experience with MSI mobos, but this one seems to check all the boxes.

NH-U12 - perfect and quiet. I don't believe you'll be achieving max overclock with this cooler though. Is that important to you?

Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 2 x 8GB - Not exactly the tightest timings. If you're not going for max overclock this should be fine. There are better binned ram out there. Either CL14 3200 or CL16 3600 would be a start. I heard that the sweet spot for overclocking is 3800 ram. Of course, better ram will cost you more. If you just want quiet and stable, then you made a good choice. If you decide you need/want more memory you can add a second pair later.

I know some say that they would use a 5-year old PSU on a new build. I would not. I believe that a new build deserves a new power supply. The heart of a computer (and it's stability) is the power supply. You could always save it for testing/backup. I recommend a quality PSU like Seasonic. They are rock solid, albeit more expensive than the competition. But you get what you pay for.

You didn't mention M.2 NVMe drive(s). You're probably going to want to get something with PCIe 4.0 to use in that motherboard.

Thanks man, much appreciated.

Ill look into the RAM, in terms of cooling, if quiet in non-gaming situation means I have to miss out on a 3% overclock, that is a trade ill make any day :).

I have quite a few standard samsung SSD's lying around evo's 850 860 etc, just figured I'd use them, I know in theory they're not as fast BUT going from 10ms to 2ms in boot time, I figure hey. May look into something that fits windows11 anyway though.

In terms of PSU's, I might take your advice on that, my last build failed, and by failed I mean it started frying components in random order before I figured out it was the PSU.

edit, ill be doing two of these builds, one with a 1080ti another with a 3080ti .. hoping I can get one of those beefed up Zen3's with cache next year for the 3080ti one.

Check out the Asus Prime X570-P and X570 TUF Gaming X570-Plus WiFi; I picked up a TUF for a build, is very nice for the money, a lot of features and good VRM setup.

Hardware Unboxed has some good X570 VRM test videos, I would pick the coolest running board in your price / availability bracket.

I WAS getting a WHEA error 18 launching Assassins' Creed today = instant reboot.
Stress tests again are showing exceptional scoring at normal temps.

3dMark @ 99.7 percent

( NEW ) Final Fantasy XIV Benchmark

I'm unable to duplicate this error in any other app / tool.

[ EDIT ]
And, after spending all day testing, the game just launched Ok.
( several times )
... yea .. wtf

I finally did it, ordered a:
5900x @ msrp - newegg
Ion+ 860P 860watt - newegg
ND-D15S cooler - amazon
2x 2x8gb BL2K8G36C16U4B dram - amazon
X570-PRO (WiFi 6) - amazon
The rest of the parts I have.

Hopefully I did not make any horrific mistakes, and it will all end well. Bit nervous oddly, that is a lot of money for me. My last computer lasted 6 years, hopefully this one will do as well.

Does anyone have recommendations (or something already written up) on testing the stability of your build?

Something with a list of the software, order of testing and testing types?

CPU
RAM
GPU

Hoping there's a quick a dirty guide on what to use and how to do it. There's a lot of tools that I've noted from this thread. Any ideas?

Possible Software for Testing:
SSD Testing
○ HWInfo64
○ ATTO Benchmark
Memory Info (Check rank)
○ MemTest86
○ AIDA64
○ Thaiphoon Burner
○ TestMem5
○ ZenTiming
CPU Software
○ Ryzen Master
○ ClockTuner 2.0 for Ryzen (Golden Sample)
○ Cinebench (performance rating, comparing performance)
○ HWInfo64
○ Prime95 (stress tester)
○ CPU-Z
○ OCCT (stress tester)

The absolute 110% 'is it stable' I feel is prime95, the thread about core cycler is a good reference for testing individual cores in a consistent and orderly manner.

Is there a certain part you feel is not stable?
