Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140 Power if you can find one... For around $50 and with performance very close to those you listed (if not better with higher RPM FAN upgrade). Hard to beat!

...

You guys think I should go with a B550 board?

If you don't need full PCIE4.0 connectivity a B550 with good VRM is a decent option..But if the price is close to a X570 I would jump on the X570.

If I go with a ROG Strix B550-F (maybe the XE new one coming out) then I get a PCI4.0 lane for the GPU and the NVMe Samsung 1TB pro I got would be ok right? That is all I'd be using.

Yes, that would work well!

I'm eyeing this memory kit. CAS 17 but only 1.35V while some of the better CAS latency stuff is either 1.4 or 1.5V.

The F4-4000C15Q-32GTZR is 1.50V but it very likely can work CL17 1.35V or lower as well... And it's cheaper. I think would be better choice

Or if you like tweaking F4-3200C14Q-32GTZR usually can hit 3800/4000MHz as well

I will leave it up to someone else to mess with memory. The one I posted is listed on the QVL for my motherboard and I've had good luck with G.Skill on my last 4 builds.

Just picked up a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB SSD and a Gigabyte Aorus B550 Pro. All that's left is to choose a cooler and then wait for the CPUs to hit shelves and I'm in business. I am going to select the Ryzen 5 5600X, so I don't necessarily need a massive cooler, even with some anticipated mild overclocking, but I'm considering anything between a Be Quiet! dark rock 4 and Noctua nh-d15. Mostly looking for something performant and quiet. Any recommendations on a cooler?

I went with a Scythe Fuma 2. It’s currently cooling a placeholder 3600 in my Coolermaster NR200P.

Oh wow, didn't know Thermalright was still making the TRUEs. I had the original 120 TRUE on my Core i5 3570k. Yeah, amazon has them for $52. The Dark Rock 4 was like $75. Just looked up some reviews and you're right, dang near identical in performance and acoustics. May have to go with that, just need to make sure there's enough room from my socket to my PCI-e slot as the TRUE is super wide.

I see a lot of people going 4x8GB. In the past I'd always thought you were more likely to get a max memory overclock with one DIMM per channel rather than two. Is that not the case anymore?

That is still the case, but you end up with a higher effective bandwidth it dual rank versus single rank, so fully populating the DIMM slots usually has a bigger benefit than some minor headroom with memory overclocking. Especially on Ryzen where there is a hard barrier at 1900MHz.

Ah, I see. Is there much difference between dual rank/single DIMM and a single dual rank DIMM?

Not really. For the most part dual rank single DIMM RAM usually has looser timings than single rank, but you'll get similar performance from dual rank DIMMs to running 4 sticks. There are some videos about it on AHOC with test results. I'll post them if I find them.

Here is a video on why having dual rank is useful:

Edit: here is one with benchmarks:

I'm looking at something like this kit to pair with a 5800x.

Something like that 4000 CL17 above looks nice, but it's 3.5x the money and extra that CAD$500 would move me from a 6800XT to 6900XT or to a 5900X (or close to both). Can't see it being worth it. The above kit is dual rank, Hynix DJR for what it's worth.

You are pretty much stuck with 3800 and below with the Ryzen memory controller. Any higher than that and you'll see a performance penalty where the system will switch from 1:1 to 1:2.

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen that. Looks like the earlier reports of higher IF speeds were probably unfounded rumors then.
Obviously it is a sample size of one, so we don't know for certain. But it doesn't look good for higher clocks. Still, the processor on a whole seems pretty amazing.

Went with this for memory. Its on QVL list
Sent Seasonic psu back due to possible issue. My Evga p2 850 is only 5 years old so going to pull that from 10700k rig and use it for Ryzen 5900x.(hope i dont regret it lol)

I really wanted to get these but they aren't on QVL list

Basically just need the cpu and mobo (Asus Dark Hero)
