Though AMD might not use the term APU anymore, that’s what we are looking at today. The Ryzen + Vega processor (single die implementation, to be clear) for desktop solutions will begin shipping February 12 and will bring high-performance integrated graphics to low cost PCs. Fully titled the “AMD Ryzen Desktop Processor with Radeon Vega Graphics”, this new processor will utilize the same AM4 socket and motherboards that have been shipping since March of 2017. Finally, a good use for those display outputs!

Though enthusiasts might have little interest in these parts, it is an important step for AMD. Building a low-cost PC with a Ryzen CPU has been difficult due to the requirement of a discrete graphics card. Nearly all of Intel’s processors have integrated graphics, and though we might complain about the performance it provides in games, the truth is that the value of not needing another component is crucial for reducing costs.

Without an APU that had both graphics and the company’s greatly improved Zen CPU architecture, AMD was leaving a lot of potential sales on the table. Also, the market for entry-level gaming in small form factor designs is significant.

Two models will be launching: the Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G. Clock speeds are higher than what exists on the Ryzen 5 1400 and Ryzen 3 1200 and match the core and thread count. The 2400G includes 11 Compute Units (704 stream processors) and the 2200G has 8 CUs (512 stream processors). The TDP of both is 65 watts.

The pricing configuration gives AMD some impressive placement. The $169 Ryzen 5 2400G will offer much better graphics performance than the $30 more expensive Core i5-8400 (based on current pricing) and has equivalent performance to the $100+ higher Core i5-8400 and NVIDIA GT 1030 discrete solution.

When looking at CPU performance, the new Ryzen processors offer higher scores than the units they are replacing. They do this while adding Vega graphics capability and matching or lower prices.

AMD even went as far to show the overclocking headroom that the Ryzen APU can offer. During an on-site demo we saw the Ryzen 5 2400G improve its 3DMark score by 39% with memory frequency and GPU clock speed increases. Moving the GPU clock from ~1100 MHz to 1675 MHz will mean a significant increase in power consumption, and I do question the size of the audience that wants to overclock an APU. Still – cool to see!

The Ryzen CPU with Vega graphics is a product we all expected to see, it’s the first perfect marriage of AMD’s revitalized CPU division and its considerable advantage in integrated graphics. It has been a long time since one of AMD’s APUs appeared interesting to me and stoked my desire to build a low-cost, mainstream gaming build. Looks for reviews in just a few short weeks!

More like Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT)
But that's a catchy name for SSD caching for HDDs. Enmotus calls Fuzedrive a "virtual SSD". If you already got an SSD there is no need for a virtual such.

Anyway I mostly irritated my more drive by software I don't really want.

I haven't benched my system, but I'd estimate these APU's are as fast as my 4ghz 8320 with 3gb 1060, which is sad(for me) and surprising.

So the best they can say is that one of these things can hit 60fps in Skyrim at 1080p? That game is over six years old. Sure, it's faster than what Intel has to offer, but a little bit faster than useless is still useless. Do they list the settings used somewhere?

Honestly, I tried Skyrim (vanilla) @ 1080P on my i3-6100's HD 530 iGPU, and it was playable, but didn't look all that great, I think things were pretty-much all on "Low".

If they can manage 60FPS @ 1080P on Skyrim (vanilla), and at a reasonable quality setting, that's really a step up, and quite impressive.

I see 96 fps for Skyrim, where do you see 60? Unless you mean it can't hit 120? Assuming these are even true.

So they are making a desktop version of fuzedrive free for AMD systems? (www.fuzedrive.com/AMD link is broken right now. EDIT: This link works.

I only see prices for a server version:

http://www.enmotus.com/online-store?hsCtaTracking=cd644900-2cc9-4d94-9da1-1356eea149e8|60a84937-9355-4dc9-976c-cf423cefc69e

EDIT: (from the new link): It is $19.99 for a 1TB to 10TB vSSD.

P.S. This software sounds interesting (think apple fusion drive) as it is meant to make an SSD and HDD work as single volume. (This is something that new PC users will probably like assuming it works well.)

You are too modest- 1060 will make sure your system is at least 2x faster. GTX1060 has ~3x computational power and ~5x the bandwidth, compared to the iGPU.

A 1060, even the 3gb version, will crush vanilla Skyrim. That game is 6 years old and the recommended requirements was 1gb of vram.

It is actually not caching. The SSD adds to the HDD. So 512GB SSD + 2TB HDD would be a single volume of 2.5TB.

Interesting, they even mention on this page Optane can be used:

FuzeDrive for AMD allows you to mix any two storage media drives into a single vSSD with a performance tier and capacity tier. Mix SSD with hard drives, or NVMe with SSD, or Optane with SSD or HDD. You get the picture.

I was trying to say it's the only title they listed where it could hit 60fps at 1080p, which I consider to be the minimum for PC gaming (otherwise just get a console). Boasting about getting somewhere between 30-59fps is silly for a desktop part.

True, but my cpu holds it back. Played Skyrim on a 5870 and performance was at least 40-50 fps.

Price it right and coupled with more reasonable DDR4 price, this 2200G will land on my parent's house sometime this year. It will be a massive upgrade for their decade-old Core 2 Duo.

2400G - 149$, AM4 Mobo - 50$, 300W BeQuiet! Pure Power - 40$, Cryorig M9A - 19$, 2x4 GB DDR4 2400 MHz Cl15 - 103$, 250 GB SSD - 80$.

Basically - under 500$ you can get pretty decent computer. Unbalanced(Ryzen 5 1400 paired with RX 550, basically), but still decent :).

I have a R5 1600 coupled with a CHVI Hero as my main rig. My secondary rig is an MSI Gaming Titanium with a A12-9800 as a placeholder cpu till I can get a true Ryzen apu. I bought the MSI board basically because imho it looks so sweet. On the other hand my CHVI looks goofy. Not a big fan of RGB garbage. I still may pick up a Taichi when they go on sale again at Newegg. The only thing that holds me back is the ram cartel and their obviously tranparent price fixing

If AMD is really making the big APU, with HBM2 for >200$ price market, with decent enough performance - there is a lot to wait for.

On the other hand, I think I will stick to Intel Coffee Lake+ Nvidia Volta combo, for my next build.

Ryzen desktop APUs coming Q1 2018. 2nd gen. Ryzen CPUs coming Q2 2018. In April alongside new chipsets.

I noticed some earlier leaks (mid December 2017) believe these are actually mobile chips.
