AMD Ryzen 3000 Builders Thread

Finally got time to do some testing tonight with my 3900x. Loaded the latest 1.0.0.4b beta bios for my asrock x470 taichi. This is with no overclocking, all stock settings and LLC set to Level 1 (lowest setting for asrock).

Finally got to see above 4600MHz on a core!

Well, the d15 is quiet, reliable and a top air cooler. I’ve had a couple of AIOs die with pump failures. If you choose an AIO, I’d suggest a 280mm unit if it fits your case; has 90% of the cooling capacity of a 360 with one less fan.
 
I picked up the Fractal meshify s2 just for that reason it has lots of room and I would be good if I went custom water in it.

Better delay the cooler purchase, then (and use the stock cooler in the meantime).

You might not find exactly the same memory modules later. And also memory prices are good right now. This could change quickly (memory prices are probably the most volatile prices of any PC component).

This is common issue with memory sticks.

I had to deal with this when going with 12GB's of DDR3 1600 Cas 7 memory in my current build.

I was able to find the identical set for this kit, so just have to keep an eye on stock.
 
Just an update on my system, specs as follows:

Ryzen 3600 set to Auto OC
Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED tower cooler
Arctic Cooling MX-4 thermal paste

ASRock B450M Pro4

XFX reference 5700, stock

2x8GB 3200CL16 (currently at 3400CL20, anything tighter on timings produces mem faults) Trident Z RGB

~3550-3600 in CB20

Running F@H beta on Navi with 1 CPU thread
Running WCG and Rosetta@Home on 11 threads

CPU max temp 75-76C, max clocl 3.968 GHz
GPU peak hot spot 84C, peak clock 1.465 GHz

Has been stable for several days, just started F@H full-bore today, but all is going well. My main upgrade consideration is faster RAM.

Even better, I can still work in office and electronic medical records and watch YouTube videos and so on without any perceptible slow-down in responsiveness.

Overall keeps my typically chilly office a little warmer and keeps my heart a little warmer on the off-chance my computer might help find some good treatments for cancer.
 
I know I'm pretty "late" to the game, but I finally put my 3900X into R6. Had to modify R6 by cutting away some metal to fit additional 2 drive cage between main hard drive compartment and the power supply, but it's all groovy now. 3900X with 64GB RAM, two NVME drives, 12 spinners (10 data drives, 2 parity drives), and 3.5" hot swap cage on top for data migration. This is my fileserver that keeps all the backups and media library (Plex). This was my "vision" for a long long time and it's nice to finally get it all together.

Looks great. Not saying the 3900X is overkill for a file server, but why take the chance? Swap it for my 3800X just in case. ;-)
 
Bah. First build that I’ve done in the past 20 years that didn’t post first power up. Fails with an unknown error code (post code 21). Tried the MSI forum, no luck. Tried a web search, no luck. Tried MSI support - product registration needed to create ticket. Product registration fails due to incorrect S/N or CHK code. There is no CHK code, there is a MNK code, but that does t work. Not loving MSI right now. Should have stuck with ASUS I guess.

Go back to the basics, out of the case, one stick of ram, nothing else except a video card. Jumper the power on button.

Before you have a heart attack 😀

Edit: and what motherboard and what CPU ? any chance it needs a bios update ?

Yeah, the board has the ability to flash the bios from a flash drive by pressing a button on the IO panel, but the procedure isn’t in the manual - so back online to find this. There is no problem with the cpu, ram, vga or boot device according to the idiot lights (leds). I reseated everything but the cpu anyway. Not having a heart attacks - just got angry spending 2 hours trying to get my product registered (1/2 that was futzing with their brain dead phone app - which somehow borked my AppleID password).
 
Oh mobo is MSI Meg x570 Unify and I’m installing a 3900x.

I specifically bought a motherboard with debug readout to make troubleshooting easier, and yet there is no entry in the chart for the code that was displayed. Annoying AF.

Well, if its a 570 board, the first bios should support 3000 series. But maybe not the 3900x ???? Since you can flash it that way, I would get the latest bios and flash it first and try again before I had a heart attack.....
 
Flash procedure failed somehow and left me with a CPU error. Don’t really know what went wrong, was supposed to get a flashing light as ROM loaded, but that didn’t happen. There seems to be no documentation on this flash procedure at MSI, just a short video on how to do it. I’ll have to continue with the whack a mole problem later. AFAIK, the 3900x should be supported with the shipping BIOS. This board just came out last month.

Well, all indications are that there is some kind of a bios problem. Especially since you can't flash it !

I have a MSI x570 MB and have used the USB flashback procedure a couple of times. I didn't run into any issues doing it.

Rename the file to MSI.ROM
Place on a fat32 formatted USB stick
Insert into the correct USB port. It's marked on the backplate.
Hold button down till you see signs of life.

From what you say I'd either guess not fat32 or you inserted it in the wrong port.

No, did it all right, just took two tries to work - whatevers I guess.
 
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8GB f4-3200c14-16GFX. Not on the compatibility list (not tested) but others with the same ram chips from G.Skill are compatible. I'll mess with the ram sticks at some point today or tomorrow. Thanks for the link, although I found it late last night. That debug code coincides with the start of memory initialization, but it doesn’t make sense that it just freezes - it should jump to an error code. The freeze is what confuses me, seems like the boot process should continue - unless there is a problem with the motherboard. I checked that the cpu was properly seated when I installed it and just before attaching the heat sink - it was level and firmly attached.
