@MalVeauX

AMD should be launching the new 12c and 16c Ryzen CPUs in October. Should. Can you wait two months?
Yessir, I can certainly wait. The question is though cost and motherboard cost to adopt the latest releases and if it's truly worth while (for the cost). Time is less crucial to me, as 2 months isn't going to change much for me, other than patience. I've waited this long to upgrade as it is. My current system works, I'm just looking to cut my processing time in half or better with the upgrade (which I've already confirmed will do so). I will look up the 12c & 16c you mentioned to try and learn more. Thanks!

Very best,

If you're set on a 3900x, prices should go down following the release of Vermeer, at least until supplies dry up. Prices on the 3900XT may even go down, though I'm less confident of that.

They sell the 3900X for $399.99 so it's not much more in the end. If I was to buy one or the other I'd get the 3900XT in the end.
Except doesn't the 3900XT require an additional cooler purchase? Meaning that its more like a $60 difference in price when you factor in the cooler........ That's a 15% bump in price for around 1-2% extra performance right?

I'd imagine most end users would be looking at higher performing solutions anyways.

Hrm,

Looking at 3900X vs 3900XT, on Amazon right now its basically $430 vs $480 respectively. Not seeing a compelling reason for cost to go to the XT at 12% cost increase.

3900XT isn't that much better. 3600XT vs 3600X? Sure, I'd probably get the 3600XT. If I couldn't wait until Nov/Dec to see the new Zen3 hexcore.

So just thinking out loud, if I were purchasing today, I'm considering:

ASUS TUF X570+
Ballistix 32Gb (16x2) DDR4 3200 CL16
Ryzen 9 3900X AM4
Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe M.2 SSD

Though not purchasing today, I will likely wait to see what the fall release does with availability and prices, though I'm not expecting any major price drops on anything here. But availability and all that, and what refreshes.

Any thoughts on the Motherboard, RAM and SSD above?

Very best,
The only change I'd make is going to DDR4 3600 since the price difference is minimal.

@scannall

I think that stuff is Hynix CJR, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Looks like Crucial has changed around some of their product SKUs so it's getting harder to tell where they're using Micron e-die (I can't find the AESC and AESK products for sale anymore). So that Ballistix RAM might be better from an OC point of view . . . I just can't tell what ICs are in it!

@MalVeauX

Try to find out of that RAM you're looking at is Micron e-die.

edit: Looks like the newer SKUs are also Micron e-die. I would go with a DDR4-3000 Crucial 2x16GB kit and overclock that stuff! Unless you really want to try out that Hynix CJR kit that scannall linked.

Look for SKUs like
BL2K16G30C15U4B

$124 until August 31st.

Depends on how good you are at under volting, this is a tool to take the guess work out of that manual process.
Well there's undervolting and then there's undervolting. The tool seems to lower power consumption a bit, while using negative offsets and/or inducing vdroop via low LLC settings doesn't.

It's probably more fun to play around on your own, but for those who give up the tool may be of some benefit.

Zen 3 rumor (read it somewhere) is bringing per core voltage adjustments. Maybe if we're lucky we'll get per core overclocking and and a higher IF included. I'd imagine the combo of all 3 would eliminate any advantage left for Intel.

New chip - swapped the 3800X for a 3900XT.
( just a chip and cooler swap )

Old = 3800X @ 101.4 @ IF 1900
New = 3900XT @ auto @ IF 1833
( Prime95 error free 10hrs -- 83C highest temp - on AIR )

I had to ignore most of the DRAM calculator numbers.

.. with interesting results so far ...

Depending on the " auto " tuning that is my config .. here are my AIDA64 scores.
( Look at the timing my MSI x570 wanted --- on AUTO for the 3900XT )

I hit over 60k ... the nanos are not bad either ( tolerable )

This chip idles HOT. --- looking for the solution ...

( Boost configuration - All Core not tested )

[EDIT] - This chip booted at IF 1900 and 1866 - but fails on P95
( as I raised IF... my bandwidth dropped also -> not like my 3800X )
