Amd Radeon 6970 Rumours Source claiming it to be faster than gtx 580.

Barts was rumored to be 4D and that turned out wrong. Whys is everyone accepting that Cayman will now be 4D? That would mean Cayman and Barts are running off two different architectures. I've not known AMD/Ati to develop two different archs for the same series.

That is a really good point. However, I have a hard time believing that the 6970 would only be 25% faster than a 6870 when it is twice (I think twice) the die size. That just does not make much sense at all... I can't really fathom how the 6970 would not be able to achieve performance within 5% (average cross all games) of the GTX 580. The scary part is the rumor that "it was not meant to compete with the 580"... However, I suppose that could be also be taken the other way, as in it is faster... no idea, however... Oh well, time will tell.

If that is true, then the 570 and the 6970 will likely be neck and neck then since the 570 is going to be as fast as the 480 is now since it has the same specs, given what has been stated about the card is true. The 6970 will likely be faster, but by how much only time will tell. This, of course, all depends on the accuracy of that statement by kitguru about it (the 6970) not being priced the same and thus not perform the same as the 580.

Zardon is the new fud. Maybe fuad will become charlie II. The rumours about the gossip writers is actually more entertaining than their weird predictions - that basically cover any and all bases. Long winded way of saying zardon was pretty good at driver heaven, but his new site sucks.

I guess that is due to the fact AMD NI, when the 32nm was still a go was supposed to depart the 5D.

Additionally there has been hints from people like Anand, Ryan, Kyle, etc, that Cayman is different than Barts, that ended being a rebalance of Cypress/Juniper.

Just check the 6870/6850 reviews.

Further, AMD own slides refer to Cayman being a new tessellator gen when compared to Barts.

It might be possible that Cayman ends up being an up-scaled Barts with a new tessellator and the GPGPU stuff.

If that and the 1920 sps rumours is true, than a die size of 400mm^2 or more would be likely. That would still be 71% more shaders than the 6870 and 100% more than the 6850.
