We're even getting "articles" from one particular brainless mass that show this confusion. Some people have a [H]ard time understanding, to be fair, so AMD would only benefit from making things clearer, I agree.

Yup vulgar display this is pretty much wrapped up to me. Polaris is already going to have a massive uphill launch thanks to amd.
The downfall of amd over the last few years perfectly highlights the fact that they are run by engineers and nvidia is run by salesmen (and good ones).

They do not know how to sell their products and that is killing them. Letting nvidia enjoy the performance crown and having no new products to even talk about once again adds to nvidia mind share and destroy confidence in amd even further. Now it even looks like p10 won't even have the sub $300 market to itself for very long.

I personally love amd hardware and have only bought GPUs from them in recent years. It's amazing how becoming a salesman instantly makes you mistrust anything a company days (nvidia) because you know when you are being sold to. No danger of amd causing that mistrust because they couldn't sell anything on purpose.

AMD is in a tough position - I have a friend who has 2 x Radeon R9 290 in Crossfire and he very much wants to upgrade but Radeon Fury was not the product for him as performance / framebuffer wasn't much more or identical than what he already had for the price.

The Radeon Fury/X/Nano has been out for less than year and their about to become second fiddle to a $380 GTX 1070 GDDR5 product. AMD had no intention of releasing the HBM2 successor to these products until Spring 2017 but rumors are now suggesting they will be forced to bump up the release date to this October. We'll see if AMD responds with price cuts to $399 or lower on the Radeon Fury/X/Nano to move the remaining inventory before October.

Not sure that is even feasible, HBM is pretty expensive from what has been seen, and they can't be giving these units away...

I guess we will see tonight @ 10PM (ET) what they will show us and what their plan is.

Yeah I can't imagine them continuing to make Fiji, and especially not Fury X with an expensive watercooler.

It's what they're going to have to do just like with R9 290 a year and a half ago. Who wants to buy a Fury X for even $420?

To upgrade from R9 290 CF would probably not be satisfactory with anything less than GTX1070 SLI.

Gamers won't buy the Fury X even for $299 when 1070 will be $379. But there is a group of buyers that will definitely be interested in heavily discounted Nano/Fury X cards. $800 profits per year x 4-5 cards per 1 motherboard with a 1000-1200W PSU is $ in the bank. For example, I am buying 6-12 more cards between June-July but I haven't decided which ones since current prices are all irrelevant until 1070/P10 launch.

The downfall of amd over the last few years perfectly highlights the fact that they are run by engineers and nvidia is run by salesmen (and good ones).

Let's not get all negative now. AMD's cash flow situation is going to be way better in 2016 than the last 3-4 years. Zen will sell better than Bulldozer even if it's not as good as Skylake/BW-E because Intel left a giant gap for AMD to come in since their cheapest BW-E 8-core is over $1000 USD. AMD has also gained market share in dGPUs where they are now almost at 30% overall.

The entire online Internet community has failed to remember that Raja already confirmed that there will be 2 separate Vega chips, Vega 10 and Vega 11. They cannot grasp this concept and because of this they are trying to shove Polaris 10 into categories it wasn't designed to compete in. We don't know how accurate these specs and timelines are, but there is a clear distinction between Vega 10 and Vega 11 in AMD's line leaving room for RX 490/490X cards (Vega 10) and Fury/Fury X successors (Vega 11).

All it means is AMD is late with its next gen cards, but it does NOT mean that Polaris 10 was ever intended to compete with 1070/1080 as HardOCP is trying to tell us.

Polaris 10 = 7850/7870 = Pitcairn successor (hence 230-240ish mm2 die).

I meant, that the cards already in the channel may indeed drop in price, but, they won't be making any new Fury cards if the margins don't add up.

AMD needs to forget their timeline and release information soon.

They are leaving the brainless masses in the dark and then trusting them to understand that Polaris is not meant to compete with 1080 and 1070. It doesn't matter how compelling your card is for the price and they simply have not learned this lesson during their market share hemorrhaging. Having the fastest card on the market speaks volumes for the uninformed that typically shop in the price bracket they are targeting. Nvidia's market domination has been fueled by spontaneous trait transference for the last 4 gpu generations. People see the fastest flagship and automatically think that everything nvidia has the fastest card no matter than performance level.

They either need to outright take the performance crown or start getting information out everywhere they possibly can or no one will buy Polaris even if it's awesome. Their current strategy only works on c-type (cognitive) personalities, and only on some of them because they still want the best even if it costs them.

Biggest factor in sale-ability of GPUs is... benchmarks. No matter how good your salesmen or marketing team is, when you see independent reviews detailing performance benches, only then are minds made up on what to buy.

Mark from XFX :

it would be something like a 390 in performance, $400 price for both air and water option.

It seem's Powercolor and XFX both think that Polaris could benefit from water cooling, Maybe they OC very well under water? They would have to if Mark thinks they could get 1070 price for it.

That is your opinion. The reality of the matter is that benchmarks work on people who make decisions with logic. People who make decisions using logic make up a very small portion of the buyers in the market. Most of them frequent forums like this to get as much information as possible.

The vast majority of people make decisions using emotions. These are the people that go to best buy and ask a clueless employees what the fastest card is to which the reply is nvidia. They then look on the shelf and see an nvidia gpu next to a similarly priced amd card that are in their price range and think to themselves that nvidia is faster even if it isn't in reality.

Nvidia dominates the emotional buyers market. This is the power of mind share. The performance crown is associated with the entire product stack even if a cheaper amd card has better benchmarks an emotional buyers will not touch it because they don't care about benchmarks.

The really sad part about amd's current strategy to rely on price/performance is that it doesn't always work on logical buyers even if it should. A logical buyer with money to spend wants the best just as much as an emotional buyer and will pay more for it.

If amd were smart they would be sponsoring every popular gaming streamer and game review site with the latest and greatest hardware and stop even sending cards to benchmark sites. The emotional buying masses would see all their favorite gamers and game reviewers using amd cards and just assume that they are using amd hardware because it's the best.

TL😀R

The majority of people buy with emotional motivations. A small minority (forum going benchmark junkies) buy with logic. Amd sells logically, and nvidia sells to emotion.

Which do you think works?

No way it comes in at $400. That's suicide pricing.

AMD Radeon RX 480 specifications leaked?

AMD-Radeon-RX-480-Specifications.jpg

The specifications are rather poor in details, but we are told that the RX 480 (it appears this is in fact the official name for this card) has 5.5 TFLOPs single-precision computing power. Card would be equipped with 8GB GDDR5 memory across 256-bit interface.

The card will be powered through single 6-pin power connector, and judging from the chart it will compete with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980.

AMD Radeon RX 480 would support DirectX12 with Async Compute capability. RX 480 will also feature DisplayPort 1.4, full HEVC and HDR monitor support.

Also 5.5 TFLOPs indicate that RX 480 has 2304 Stream Processors clocked at 1200 MHz, but this part is pure speculation at this point.

Positioned against Geforce GTX 970 / GTX 980. We can probably rule out 90% Geforce GTX 1080 performance at half the price/TDP predictions.

Doing the Lord's work.

And no way this card cost $400. $250, at most.

Also, if the new name scheme is true, I can dig it. I don't even know why they use that stupid R#/A# to begin with. Be an innovator, not a follower!

How about 2048 stream processors at 1340 MHz?

Nvidia's max viable clocks went up 40% from 1500 to 2100, amd might see a similar jump, and there are 390's selling with 1050 or 1100 Mhz already, so it's only a 30% increase.

480 - $200
480X - $250

That would be some great options for ~$200. Otherwise, just grab a used 290x/970 and be done with it. The new features and power consumption are nice, but this cannot really go over $250. Agree.

Looks promising, but it looks like AMD is chasing NV's older chips 970/980, which coincidentally is also what NV appears to be hinting at for a 1060Ti (or the like) as well.

<racist image redacted>

Jokes aside, I sincerely hope these specs are off, otherwise we can all agree that the node jumps we've all been waiting for are a massive disappointment.
