After bad earnings (really bad: revenue -40%, unit shipment -43%, ASP +5%) from last quarter, AMD has finally made up their minds to officially drop their CPU prices

First, even if one retailer is having a clearance, these are not the current generation, so yes, they could afford to take the heat. Its the retailer that loses the margin, NOT AMD. I am not saying its true, just that its possible that its true.
 
AMD dropped the prices on their own online shop, and in the past once they've done that, the price cuts are official.

Anyways, many of 5000 series of CPUs have been that price at most retailers for weeks now. They had to do something for trying to capture at least some of the lower-end market from Intel since Intel was a lot more price aggressive in that segment (and had a lot better inventory) during the COVID related supply issues AMD faced for most of 2020 and 2021 when they were forced to focus on higher-margin skus.

AMD already made operating loss of $26 millions on client CPU department last quarter. So I guess maintaining 40% margin won't be enough to offset dropping of revenue and unit shipment, hence the price cut.
 
But isn't AMD's 40% margins their overall margin?

That is including consoles, GPUs, client CPUs and server CPUs.

Or coming at from the other end, the cost of making 7nm Zen3 CPU isn't that high, and while the packaging costs are harder to estimate the CCD cost itself should be that high.

A Zen3 CCD is ~84mm² and per 300mm wafer that should give them around 650 good one (and some of the 50 bad dies might still be usable).
Even at a the worst possible price per wafer of $20k that would be around $30 per die and I would say with 7nm demand waning that $10k or less is far more realistic. So the CCD costs is maybe around $15. Plenty of scope to cut prices and still make big margins.

AMD have painted themselves into a corner with their insistence that Zen4 + AM5 has to be all DDR5, so selling Zen3 for less at volume is a good strategy as heading into a recession AM5 as a whole platform is simply too expensive.
 
Is Micro Center still texting a $25 off cpu coupon to folks when they sign up for that? I'm just wondering, because I signed up on the web page, got the message that I would be getting a $25 off coupon, and then I never saw anything. I'm wondering if they are no longer sending those out to people......

I wouldn't call it bad financials but the issue of these parts being over 2 years old now. it'd be like intel selling a 10th gen for full price 2 years later. the bom is low enough on these to push them out for a cheaper price and the r&d payback has been achieved.

In the words of the good @Markfw BRING ON THE PRICE CUTS and I can get a sweet 7950X and an X670e mobo and soup that bad boy up.

that is exactly how it works. retailers prepay not after pay. the sales is on them in the end. AMD sells to distributors, those distributors sell to stores. amd or any company counts the sale to the distributor, not to the end customer unless the customer buys directly from them.

I understand your point in saying 2yrs old. However, it is not technically correct, the best kind of correct.

The 5800X 3D and 5700X released months ago, not years. They are not the only retail Zen 3 CPUs to launch since the initial batch either. 10th gen is a bad comparison, because it's already 3 generations old. AM4 is only one gen old, and still has a flagship level gaming CPU in the line up. Admittedly, the 3D is the only one that isn't simply filling in holes in pricing against the competition. Unsurprisingly, even that has worked out. Instead of jumping ship and building a 12th gen system, AM4 upgraders simply bought a new Zen 3 CPU for their current setup. Or swapped boards and CPUs.

The current pricing has definitely bolstered retail AM4 sales for CPUs and boards. AMD's partners can't be anything but pleased over how things have worked out with the platform.

Yeah, $10K is probably about right for 7nm. Might even be a bit less than that. $20K sounds closer to the worst case they pay for 5nm.
 
I am not sure if it's due to low earnings (which is true for most if not all vendors) but AMD has a tradition of doing good offers around "Thanksgiving/ Black Friday" period. Any price reduction is welcome. I hope motherboard prices become reasonable again - they are holding back new systems' sales.

That's what I'm hoping for on the Ryzen 5 5600. I just saw it for $119 with a free game, and was so tempted. However, I think it might fall a bit more before the end of the month - in part because I don't care about the game.

I mostly use Bangood to buy tech stuff from China but they don't really do computer parts. Is there a safe site like Bangood that sell's cpu's etc? Alibaba seems like you need to check carefully to avoid being ripped off.

What is Ali express direct ? Is that like buying from the company directly? If so that would be perfect and remove most of my fears of being scammed.
 
It means that Ali Express will take care of the shipping and it will be delivered to your doorstep. Ali Express's customer service is said to be top notch from what I've heard (one guy in my office ordered a T-shirt. It took too long to be delivered because it was normal non-Direct shipping. Took almost two months. He complained to them and Ali Express refunded him. In the end, he got his money AND the T-shirt!).

Just make sure to read everything about the condition of the item and if in doubt, contact the seller. Be prepared to be a little frustrated though. If you want something from them, they will be like, "NO NO CAN'T DO THAT! Then suddenly, they will agree". Happened with me when I wanted them to upgrade the BIOS on the mobo to the latest version. Finally the seller agreed after sounding like there was nothing I could say to convince him.

I find it funny that months before the release of Zen 4 people were predicting a surge in sales for the new processors. So much so that it would cause a shortage of DDR5. It shows just how slanted towards AMD this forum is.

Now we know that thinking was ridiculous. Raptor Lake is outselling Zen 4. Zen 3 is outselling Zen 4. Even more so now with the price drops on Zen 3.

I watch the stock of 13900K at Micro Center compared to the 7950X. Always 25+ available for the 7950X while they sell out of the 13900K within a couple days after getting a new shipment in.
