AMD Beema/Mullins Launch Thread

Is the A8-6410 also a Beema? It seems to be an upgrade option on several HP Beema laptops, but I can't find any information about it. The A6-6310 already turbos up to 2.4GHz, so I'm curious how much better the A8-6410 is.

Nope, 28nm = Puma and 20nm = Puma+.

When the marketing team doesn't clarify with the engineering team we get these mistakes.

AMD's marketing fixed it after the May 4th update, but sometimes the marketing team still calls it Puma+ when it should be Puma.

The 20nm SoC makes use of Puma+ CPU cores and the 28nm Soc makes use of Puma CPU cores.

28nm, Tick -> Puma
20nm, Tock -> Puma+
20nm, Tick -> Leopard? (or Cheetah)
14nm, Tock -> Cheetah? (or Cheetah+)

I'm not quite so sure about the Cheetah core. My understanding is the AMD is developing a high-performance custom ARMv8 SOC being the K12, as well as a completely new x86 chip combining the big and small cores into one uArch that scales throughout the power spectrum.

I think AMD has a shot at making a decent dent against both the ARMy, and maybe even Intel, that is if they are on the same process node. But even by the time AMD comes out with new x86, they'll be on 16nm FF+, compared to Intel with Skylake/Broxton+ at 14nm having a solid head start, and then moving on to Cannonlake at 10nm. Simply put, due to process implementation, they will continue to play catch up to Intel (at least with x86).

AMD is indeed reshuffling their line up but it is just changing the targets.

Not competing in high-end (especially Desktop), they sure compete in everything else from Tablets to Servers.

Also, they never said they will abandon Desktop or any other x86 segment/market. They are simple targeting more markets than before but keeping what they already have.

If you think AMD can get out of $280 million/quarter what Intel gets out of about $2.5 billion/quarter, then I don't really know what too tell you.

At the high end Bulldozer core is a disaster. But at the low end AMD has an excellent microarchitecture and beats Intel in overall compute efficiency. AMD's Beema A6-6310 (15w) runs circles around Baytrail-D (10w)and Baytrail-M (7.5w) in pure performance and overall compute performance / watt (CPU + GPU). CPU performance is ahead by 20% and GPU perf is almost 2x. A6-6310 is faster than A6-5200 / Athlon 5350 due to 2.4 Ghz turbo and 800 Mhz GPU compared to 600 Mhz on the Kabini chips.

AMD is getting its act right at the high end and the results will be there in 2016 with the 2 new high performance cores - ARMv8 K12 and x86-64.

I seriously think there was any luck involved in this move (it's funny that when you point those dubious "mistakes" in the review comment section the posts gets deleted, like my last one suggesting no sane person will buy a Kabini to run AAA games on it, but instead play popular titles like League of Legends and DotA, so benching the formers instead of the latters made no sense).

I haven't seen Mullins in anything yet (Tablet or Laptop). They seem to sticking Beema mostly in 15.6" laptops, and putting Bay Trail-M in 11.6" laptops.

You can add popular games to your benchmark suite updating the most significant but older reviews.

By your flawed logic Anand should keep testing CPU/GPUs with older software suites because they were already stablished a long time ago.

Benching anything but WoT/LoL type of games on a non-gaming oriented notebook/ultrabook is ultimately stupid, because your average joe doesnt shell 60 bucks for an AAA game to run it on a crippled mobile system, it they were to game on that system, it would be the +30 millon playerbase and less demanding game.

One thing is to be incompetent or naive, the other but a lot worse is tobe intentionally incompetent. Benching Tomb Raider on a Kabini or adding horrible setups like a 4770K+75 bucks dGPU on the comparisons tends more to the latter rather than the former.

Take away the massaging: Intel is handing out cash with almost every tablet BT sale.

Intel's way of accounting for it is mainly to not affect the ASP and Gross Margin on the recorded BT sale. Might also make the transaction partly or wholly tax deductible as well but confirming that would require quite a bit of digging through the US business tax code.

All that means for Mullins is that we are unlikely to see many AMD tablet design wins:

1. Because ARM SoCs are obviously very attractive and established for OEMs in that market

2. Any OEM considering an x86 tablet will be tempted by the money being offered by Intel, AMD not having the funds to match said offer.

As for notebook, SFF, and desktop though Kabini is quite competitive to BT. Power use is reasonable, graphics are better, CPU can be quite a bit faster in certain tasks and is not appreciably slower in any, only BT advantage is dual channel memory on some SKUs. Beema being an improvement to Kabini should do alright. Would do even better if AMD had a stronger brand.

I don't think its a conspiracy, but I do believe all review sites should be adding DOTA to their benchmarks being as it is quickly becoming a very heavily played game and requires a good amount of hardware.
