Unfortunately this probably means higher prices from here on out. If people are willing to pay this much for 7970/7950 then imagine what they'd pay for a beastly 680.
As for me I might just buy my wife a tablet to mess around with and I might just game on it. Not paying these ridiculous prices amd or nvidia.

They really only need to worry about a backlash if nVidia decides go come in at a low price and AMD has to cut their prices as well. If they do this sooner, rather than later, it will just annoy those who felt they overpaid, but if it's just some small price drops around summer, no one will care all that much. It also depends on when AMD releases the rest of their lineup and how well it performs.
 
The lack of 1.5GB version is a mistake.

Edit: It's not a mistake. It makes business sense. It just sucks for us.

They'll be coming. It will end up being like the 6950, the 1.5GB version won't ship until there's a market niche that needs to be filled.

They are extracting every penny out of these 7XXX series cards they can. I agree that the 1.5gb won't be seen till there is competition. Heck they wouldn't even release the 7950 till they felt they got a good amount of 7970 sales out of the way. Didn't want the 7950 taking sales from the 7970.

To me it's like going somewhere and they nickel and dime you to death. Sure you might get me one time but keep it up and I won't ever come back. As of right now I don't believe I'll ever buy another AMD product again.

Gamers won't follow AMD/Nvidia to the moon on prices. They will have to relax. The fact is, gaming at 1080p with modest AA/AF is not a huge feat in current and near future games. There are only so many people that need to push 2+ screens or have 2560x1600 resolution screens.

I mean, my OC'ed 470 hits P6300, which is plenty to game anything at 1080p. I'll be interested to see how long these prices last and if the market will accept them.
 
The only one at $459.99 is the Sapphire with the weak fan setup. Those will sell out first, leaving the next ones at $469.99 and up. Might as well just get a 7970.

Compared to 5870, GTX 480 was ~10-15% faster, hotter, noisier, and all that for ~25% more money.
Compared to GTX 580, 7970 is ~20-25% faster, cooler, better OC, and costs ~10% more.

For you AMD "has lost their minds", you're "surprised at the amount of people willing to shell out $$ for a 7970" and "don't believe I'll ever buy another AMD product again". And yet, you have GTX 480...

Well said. Price now is very inflated due to high demand for high end GPU (blame BF3) and very limited 28nm yields. Once demand ease off and yields improve they will definitely want to push the volume on these cards.

We as consumers should ease off and play it smart especially those who already have a decent performance 40nm card. The price will surely drop like a stone later on.So a 7970 will allow you to increase a couple of settings in BF3 compared to my unlocked 6950 but so what. The change in gaming experience hardly justify the price. Think of it this way if the price is not enticing in any way for you to upgrade then AMD doing us an even greater favor. Save the money and spend it on more enjoyable things in life. Gaming is hardly productive anyways.

Couldn't the same thing be said about a $110 6850 compared to your 6950? It's just a couple settings...

I'm not trying to justify the price of the 7950 (seems too high compared to the 7970) but a couple settings is all any next gen video card upgrade generally gets you. You can extrapolate that line of thinking all the way down to integrated graphics. :biggrin:
 
Looks like the 7970s are going out of stock again now that people are seeing the pricing on the 7950s.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out and for how long during "tax return" season...
 
I think AMD, in it's previous bids to undercut Nvidia on pricing, made people expect far too much. Right now, AMD is absolutely making the best financial decision for ITS sake. Not Joe-consumer. And they really do have the right --- heck, the proof is in the fact that the 7970 was a sellout at it's price.

And if you look at the 7950, the fact that it is 95% of the time faster than the 580 at stock, uses FAR less power, has plenty of overclock room (leading it to match a stock 7970), and is MSRP at $459 (*cough*... sorry, can't help what the AIBs are doing), why else would AMD not give themselves a chance to make some money?
 
The MSRP for the stock versions is $449 which is reasonable. The cards offer about 80-85% of the performance of a 7970 which has a MSRP of $549 so the pricing is fine.

I do see the factory overclocked versions are more expensive at $499 but that happens with every card out there.
 
Wow, I never thought I'd be paying the same as US customers for graphics cards, now that I am, everyone is up in arms. You guys don't know how good you have it. I'm paying $460 for the 900mhz gigabyte card.

I look at your sig and I'm confused. You have a card that's more expensive and worse performing in every metric. Unless it's for CUDA in some app and it was a lot cheaper than a comparable pro card. That would make sense. That doesn't explain though why you think the prices are outrageous.

Yup absolutely right. Next gen cards should always be priced based on the performance of last previous cards. Infact it should sell at $10000 because its probably over 20x the performance of a 6800GT. Comsumers should not take technology advance for granted and should in fact pay for it.

Are you djnsmith7's lawyer? Or do you own a 580 3GB as well and think the 7950's prices are outrageous? Either way, if you could try and answer my question in the manor it was asked that would be nice. If not, then be condescending with someone else.

Tell me about it. The 7970 retails for $750 where I live (India). The GTX 580 1.5GB is still $575 here. Luckily I was able to get my 5850 for $360 which was just $30 more than what it cost on Newegg at the time.
