Except GTX460 768mb/ 1GB cards are selling like hot cakes and yet their prices have fallen. AMD has pulled this crap with HD5750/5770/5850/5870/5970/6850/6870. There is a good chance even if they have ample supply, they will raise the prices of 6950/70. We'll see.
I don't think AMD has officially raised the prices on the 6800. Retailers have, right? Unless I missed an announcement. I think the same goes for the 5700 series, but I honestly don't remember if they did or didn't change prices. As far as I know the 5800 series is where AMD officially raised the prices.

Retail price gouging is a whole other story. Taking advantage of supply/demand is sort of expected from retailers.

According to overclockers.co.uk there is a planned price increase in Jan from AMD, and this is known before any reviews or sales figures... If they know they can sell for higher, why don't they? The only reason I can think is to get reviewers to review the card based on an artificially low MSRP.

Kind of dishonest but ya I could see the bang for buck rearing its ugly head again. As I understand the 6970 are in large supply and the 6950 are in short supply . Which if true is a good thing for AMD. As it could mean yeilds are very good for fully functional die. Could amd use disabled shaders that can be turned on later . They like this method so who knows.

Newegg has them...

6970 = $370

6950 = $300

XFX cards are $10 more.

Pretty kickass pricing. If anyone wants one at that rate, they should jump on these cards NOW! I wouldn't be surprised if the 6970 hits $400+ after the first wave sells out.

If I didn't have a step up pending, I'd be tempted to get one (or two) myself.

That "thunking" sound we're hearing is the sound of 6870s hitting the For sale/trade forum :p

BTW where does the 6950 land in terms of performance? I might buy one just because I'm feeling saucy. I assume it's about the 5870 in terms of performance?

They say overclocked 6950 had no problems performing on par with 6970.

This is an incredible value $300 for the 6950! I think I'm going to grab two for CrossFire that 2GB is so delicious. :)

From the XFX 6970 and 6950 on the egg for those that care:
Card Dimensions 11.3" x 4.38" x 1.5"

Though the pics make it look comparable to the 5870, which I thought was 11"... hopefully a review will just show it plainly for we of the sff's.

If you zoom in on some of the pics on Newegg, it looks like the PCB itself is 11" long but they extended the shroud past the PCB. They did the same thing with the reference 5800s. It's like they don't realize that the card itself is already ginormous, and it actually has to fit into a PC case.

This was especially dicey for 5970 owners because the shroud extended the card just over 12", which was a standard for over sized card support brackets in most cases. with the 5970 it was also just the fan shroud and not the PCB itself. :confused:

I'm worried that if I don't grab them now later on the prices will go up. :(
I'm between buying one 6970 or CrossFire 6950.

Great pricing on the 6970 if the performance is between 480 and 580.

I'm still baffled as to why a new gen was needed to reach that performance level though...

Well, I wish there were reviews up at least three hours ago, then. Aren't these things under $400 (for a 6970)? So who knows how it performs... $400 for a leap of faith. :/
For some, they just want to buy from their preferred GPU maker, and if turns out to be a bit slower...it won't matter to them. It may be a bit slower than the 580, but I doubt performance will suck.

This price on this cards are really cheap. Expect nvidia to drop their price of the video cards. How much profit is amd making on those cards.

Why is it baffling. A new generation on an old 40nm process . Isn't this the way to iron out the bugs . Fermi will improve on 28nm . So AMD has to stay in step or lose big time later.
If GF delivers AMD can have dies @28nm from both GF and there present suppliers. What if GF process @ 28nm is better than that other fabs 28nm . Seems to me AMD had to get the new arch out on old process as going into 28nm process AMD seems to have the better poker hand.At the table as they be playing 2 chairs at the table. If GF has better process. NV no longer has better fab deal than AMD.
