^ I think that proves you could put AMD on a pig and people would buy it ;)

Edit: Well, not the CPUs.

So it can be bought (assuming this isn't a preorder) but there aren't any official reviews?
Correct. It seems people are sticking to the nda on full reviews, but retailers are selling. Scan has prices for pre-order (will probably be shipping tomorrow) and OC uk are taking ordered and will be shipping tomorrow, and their prices are about the same.

From Gibbo

"Let me just say 69xx sales have already overtaken GTX 570 sales, its not even been what 3hrs yet and in 3hrs we've sold more ATI 69xx cards compared to GTX 570 have sold since launch."

lol'd.

But they are combining HD6950 + HD6970 sales vs. GTX570. In addition, this is just 1 computer store right? Can't really base long-term sales trends on 3 hours of sales at 1 store. If HD6970 is $369 or so, NV may lower the price on the 570 another $20-30. At $499, the 580 is too expensive, even when disregarding AMD's new cards and just comparing it to the $349 570.

Seems like the HD4800/HD5800 era has made it's mark on the consumers.

Joe Schmo can only read so many "Fermi = surface of sun" comments before he starts to believe it, even once the internet stops spewing them forth.

It's an AMD shop what do you expect?

I tend to buy cards towards the end of a generation. I grabbed my 470 for $200. Is GTX570 $160 better than the 470 for 25% more performance? Not for me. Is the HD6970 going to be $180 better than the 470? Nope. GTX580 costs 2.5x more for 50% performance increase. At the end of the day, both the 6800/6900 and GTX5xx series still failed to bring anything better at $199....This is why I am waiting until 28nm and more price drops over the next 12 months. Glad to see AMD putting some pricing pressure on NV. :D

I think OCuK is the largest online retailer over "there."

I think I read that somewhere but I am not sure. He sold 50 HD 6970s in 5 minutes. In comparison they sold about 300-400 GTX 580 so far.

I wasn't eager to pay $350 for a GTX285 either when I purchased my HD4890 for $175. :awe: You can't really compare GTX580's sales to HD6970. It seems GTX570 is the closest price competitor to the 6970.

That BIOS switch is fascinating. They must have quite a few RMAs from failed flashes to bother implementing such a thing.

@Badb0y

50x 6970 cards in under 5mins? woah.... wonder how long it ll be for he runs out of the 6970s, even if pace slows down with the sales.

Man oh man, can't wait for the reviews. I actually ordered a eVGA 570 SC the other day but then cancelled it almost immediatly telling myself to wait just a few more days. No matter which way I go I can't wait to upgrade from this trusty, but slow, 4870 512. It will be nice to finally be able to play BF:BC 2 at 1920x1200 with details turned up.

C'mon reviews and retailers, my visa is burning a hole in my pocket ;)

The high sales could be in response to:

Also remember in January prices will go up £10 on 6950 and £20 on 6970 plus an additional 2.5% for VAT increase. So be pre-warned AMD are doing very low prices for launch just like they did on 58xx series.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18001033&postcount=14

Looks like customers learned their lesson from the 5800 series. AMD launched at a reduced rate to get the bang/buck rave reviews from the launch, then then raised the prices. I bought a 5870 shortly after launch last year, and it was months before you could buy one for that price again.

I'm sure the 6970/50 will be great cards, but this tactic is about as slimy as anything NV has done. You could chalk it up to supply/demand last year, but AMD seems to have a methodology of intentional deception with regards to launch pricing and getting the coveted "best bang for the buck" title.

edit: of course, this is provided that the price increase comes from AMD and not overclockers.co.uk themselves.

BFG, could you by chance tell us when the NDA is up? Or would telling us when it is up violate NDA in itself?
