This looks like a repeat of the 4800 series vs NVs G200 performance (and pricing-wise).

So much for 580 prices falling.

On the bright side I can now pick up a 2nd XFX 5850 for $179AMIR. Yummy!

It appears that NVidia can breath a sigh of relief, as their initial slowness into DX11 hasn't compounded on them. Fanboys from both sides can have their preferred Brands, without making sacrifices along the way. Absolute Performance, Value, or Feature consumers have options from both camps.

All is well.

If the initial reviews that are breaking NDA represent the performance of the 6970, I am thorough dissapointed. It isn't that nVidia has a faster part that dissapoints me, it is the fact that they can barely beat their own 5870 from 15 months ago.

But, I will reserve final judgement until I see AT and ABT's review.

Wow that 6950 OC'd was at the heals of the GTX 580 without touching voltages. Meh I am a bit disappointed with this release, I guess we were spoiled by the numerous leaks prior to the launch.

These are by far the weirdest cards I have ever seen released. Performance fluctuates from amazing to crap on a per game basis lol.

I like to geek on the high end stuff, but to be honest the top end GPU's are way out of my budget.

I'm very happy and surprised at where AMD has priced these cards. I'm shocked how low the prices are.

Will be nice to read through the gauntlet of reviews when they start to fall at midnight.

Edit: or maybe I won't need to wait to read the reviews.

I crunched the numbers from VR-zone:

6970 performance improvement over 5870 [at 2560 - at 1920]:

RE5: [15% - 14%]
Dirt 2: [19% - 6%]
Stalker COP: [52% - 35%]
LP2: [20% - 14%]
Mafia 2: [24% - 15%]
HAWX 2: [18% - 20%]
Unigine: [58% - 57%]

I would have expected a bigger performance jump in HAWX 2 considering the jump in STALKER and Unigine. Also the article says "triple tessellation performance" but that isn't correlating in their benchmarks. If the 6970 had triple the tesselation performanceit should be as fast or faster than the GTX 570/580. But istead of a 300% gain over the 5870 there is only a 58% gain. Something isn't adding up they way it should...

Anyway I will be reading reviews and compiling numbers. Wheeeee

Well, if I were to buy a video card tonight, it would be the GTX 570. I don't like inconsistent performance and that is what the 6970 delivers at this point. Although it is possible that drivers will help smooth out the performance, the reality is that we hear that disclaimer for every GPU ever released. I don't recall drivers doing a whole lot after the release of a card since the Detonater 2 days. I am sure some performance increases will be had, but nothing stellar...

Well, if they can price it right, they will still sell. They best hurry up the 6990...

I'm glad to see several sites using Just Cause 2, only because I just bought it. I guess the whole 12:00 PST was a ruse.
