Non-gaming machine.

6-cores, better motherboard, lower price.
or
8-cores, mediocre motherboard, slightly higher price.

Why not 5600G, nice motherboard, no compromise in “general usage”?

Put that extra savings towards more ram or a higher tier nvme drive. Those are both things that matter.

Or moar ARGB bling!!!!!

:)

Are you pricing in a nice cooler for the the RKL cpu? It doesn’t come with one. Imo the provided one for AMD is “good enough” for using if budget matters, nicer ones are for noise avoidance.

11600k is the only choice if you want PCIe 4 storage so long as you get a board that supports it.

11600k has substandard igp! More heat. I go with the 5700G if you going use the igp and have no discrete graphic card.

Rocket Lake iGPU can decode av1, which the 5700G can't. So if streaming >=4K videos on YT is a consideration, then 11600K it is. Besides that you'll have better IO options with the 11600K - PCIe 4.0 NVMe, and full x16 support for discrete GPU if you want to add one in the future.

I didn't know about this av1 decode issue on the 5700G.

I went to Youtube, found a playlist, found the settings to "always use av1" and ran a 4k balloons video.
I'm running whatever latest version of FireFox is on my machine.

Task manager, on Windows 11, hovered between 8-10% CPU.

The IO options could be a deciding factor.... but from my tests, video decode is not.

Motherboards:
Intel: PCIe 4.0x , 3 x M.2, 2.5Gb LAN, Thunderbolt 4, USB 20Gb/s
AMD: PCIe 3.0x, 2 x M.2, 1Gb LAN, USB 10Gb/s

I like the 65w TDP of the AMD and it has 8-cores which could give it longer value but then the motherboard kinda drags it down plus the 5700G is limited to PCIe 3.0x (another drag).

Sigh...no clear winner...

Did you actually play a 4K av1 video? What did stats for nerds say?

Btw, you'd want to see the GPU doing the heavy lifting in Task Manager, not the CPU. An integrated GPU with a recent Windows driver ought to show up with its own GPU entry in Task Manager. If the GPU's video decode graph has a consistent elevated workload while the video is playing, then it's doing its job.

On a budget system, who is going to be using PCIe 4.0x devices?
This question is so wrong. How's having more performance on a budget board a bad thing? I guess taking features away from budget boards is a good thing? If I were in the market for a budget build, I'll go for the feature-rich board. It's a hedge against obsolescence down the road, as well as giving you the ability to be up to date now.

I just finished testing AV1 4K60 on the following -

5700G Vega 8
5700G 2060 Super
5600G Vega 7

5700G
- avg. low to mid 20s percent usage Vega 8 low to mid 20s - Dropped a frame here and there
5700G avg. 1-3 percent 2060 Super 60-70 percent - Zero dropped frames
5600G avg. low to mid 30s Vega 7 pretty much stayed at 15 percent usage - Dropped 2 frames at a time here and there.

Are you using Firefox? That's the reason your CPU utilization is high even with iGPU being partially utilized. Turing and Vega doesn't have av1 decoding, so you're most likely being served vp9 videos. That's why I asked, what does stats for nerds say?

B550 and X570 are not PCIe 3.0, the 5700G SoC is. Which brings me to what I consider the most important "hedge against obsolescence" CPU support. A $125 B550 has no trouble running a 5950x. And will support the yet released 3D V-cache line up. Z590 is limited to a 10 core CPU from an older gen.

I just told you I used AV1. I used Chrome. And mid 20s usage is high? LOL. Something has to do the work, the 2060 or the APU, what difference does it make. VP9 BTW barely touched CPU or iGPU, you would think the system is idling.

Vega and Turing can't decode av1. Show me your stats for nerds then.

If the iGPU was being utilized properly, it would be like what you got with the 2060.
Are you high or something? I know the Vega is not decoding the vid, I never said it did, just look at the CPU usage between 5700g and 5600g and it is obvious. Point is, it DOES NOT MATTER, what is decoding it, it is doing the job.

Well, the iGPU is NOT doing its job - so Rocket Lake is better when it comes to video playback, which is what the OP should factor in if he's looking to the 5700G and the 11600K from an iGPU perspective.

LOL you are hopeless. They are both APUs, what difference does it make which part of the chip does the decode? That is a rhetorical question, because again, you are beyond help.

With the higher heat of the 11600k, I would go with the 5700g.
There isn't much difference between the two when it comes to temperatures.

If the video decoder can't decode properly and has to rely on the CPU, I consider it a fail. It makes a world of difference.

It increases BoM without supplying anything of value to the consumer.

Mostly for M.2 drives....they seem to get faster by the day.

There are plenty of excellent PCIe 3.0x drives, and they tend to be cheaper as well. Perfect for the budget buyer who still wants good storage performance.

The 5700G has those extra 4 threads to give, over the 11600K. But please, do go on. Explain how the bold is not pure hyperbole. How that 12 thread chip is a better choice because it uses the UHD to decode AV1, that the 16 thread chip also does with ease.

I don't give a crap what CPU OP buys, but I don't like FUD. I have hands on user experience with the 5 series APUs, so I provide that info. And no amount of soft shoeing or goal post moving will change the fact that either Ryzen APU can easily handle the task.
