I was never a fan of his music but give him props all the same. He has had an amazing career and is a good song writer. Hes no Dylan.

Hate Springsteen. Don't know why people categorize him as "american"

Because he pretty much nailed the blue-collar, working class style of rock music. Born in the USA was the first tape I ever bought, and it pretty much epitomizes that genre. There's not a weak track on that whole album.

Plus everyone in the E Street Band was just ridiculously talented.

Thats funny as I think that album was one of his worse. IMO he whored himself out as most 70s groups did in the 80s.

He and Mellencamp's music drives me nuts now.. used to love it back in the 80's.. but it was played to DEATH then and it still is now. I cannot go for a drive home or to work and at one point in the trip one of my 6 preset stations play one of their songs.

Came to say this.

I have to change the channel whenever J. Cougar Mellencamp comes on.

This, BUT because of this, he was ridiculously over-hyped and over-played.

No, because he's terrible.

Lol, I don't think he's terrible. There's some talent, and there's a voice in his writing. Joni Mitchell was once asked about him, and she damned him with faint praise, likening him to a competent carpenter who constructed sturdy songs.

But the near hysterical hype he engendered was overbearing.

I did really like Nebraska, his acoustic album. It was my way into him, fending off the fanboy fever of some of my buddies. One of my friend's older brother stood us to tickets to see him at the Vet in Philly. At the end, he got right up in my face all aggressive like (effing NJ guido -- think Jersey shore w/o the metrosexual parts) and said, "Well?"

I paused and measured my response and said something like, "It was ok." I swear I thought he wanted to fight me then and there, and just barely held off. :p

But, listen to this song from Nebraska and tell me it's not excellent in its own way.

My name is Joe Roberts I work for the state
I'm a sergeant out of Perrineville barracks number 8
I always done an honest job as honest as I could
I got a brother named Franky and Franky ain't no good

Now ever since we was young kids it's been the same come down
I get a call over the radio Franky's in trouble downtown
Well if it was any other man, I'd put him straight away
But when it's your brother sometimes you look the other way

The problem is I have yet to hear anything interesting musically from him, nor have I heard anything that is just a cool tune I would throw on. What's left? Is it just about the lyrics? If so, that's fine, but it doesn't make him a great musician.

I know I hate a lot of old/popular bands, but they at least generally have at least one song I like, or have something in their music that alludes to why they are appealing; that is not the case with this guy. Even The Doors, who I think may be the most overrated band of all time, have at least one song that I like.

Meh, his old stuff is ok.

Some talented musicians in the E Street Band though. This guy played keyboard on one of my favorite albums, Dire Straits' Making Movies, as well as a bunch of other stuff from that era.

He has a few things that I think are okay (not the big radio hits that's for sure), but he's not really my idea of a great talent. I'd never pay to go to one of his shows.

He's not a favorite but I love some of his songs like Spirit in the Night, Prove it all Night & The Fever. Saw him in Philly in `81 and was impressed, he sure doesn't hold back.

Neil Young plays with a similar spirit as if he will never take a break, like his life depends on it. You KNOW you're experiencing rock & roll at its finest (if you're a fan of his voice).

I think they got a bit carried away with the Dylan comparisons especially over the Born to Run album.

But I don't see how it could be un-American not to like him or anybody else.
