Been [re]watching Star Wars lately and so far I find it to be extremely childish and somehow annoying. I don't mind cartoons and animated movies there and then. But Star Wars is like 5 y/o material. Am I the only one? :D Star Trek is a much better franchise.

Most people at least like Star Wars (or parts of it).

However, there is a guy who lives up the street from me who was kicked in the head by a horse, and ever since then he's just not quite right in the head. Many times he wanders up and down our street, talking to himself and screaming at inanimate objects like trees and rocks. Ever since his accident, he has stopped liking Star Wars, and believes Star Trek is better. That poor, poor brain-damaged bastard. I feel bad for him.

I love Star Wars, but not Disney, which is fake SW. I much prefer the old Canon.

allow me to explain why you are wrong.

1. Star Trek .. is a franchise? There is only one 'trek, only one captain - KIRK. TOS is the only 'trek which is watchable, once you take away the miniskirts, plastic bag monsters, facial putty makeup, bleeping lights and that classic theme tune, you got nothing left. "Serious" and Scifi dont normally go well together.
2. again . what exactly are we talking about? The film called Star Wars, or .. whatever those abomination are, that came afterwards?
it wasn't even called "A New Hope", or f* Episode IV. It was just "Star Wars".

Star Wars 1 & 2 are great films, SW3 is ok and a decent ending to the trilogy. SW 4/5/6 are possibly the worst films ever made, SW 7/8/9 are modern trash for ADHD kids.
Star Trek is only good when it's bad. TNG was fun for the first few episodes, and then some of us realized how much of a nerdfest it was. Nothing else was even remotely watchable after that.

There are only 3 star wars movies - fuck the rest. And the 3rd is questionable!

Thankfully you didn't bring up the Lord of the Rings -

Animated characters, infants mechanics/pilots.

How am I suppose to take this movie seriously?

But you're a PC gamer? You have no authority with regard to stone-casting, nerd.

Star Wars was a product of the times. Back when the first movie came out in '77, scifi movies were either very dull or very corny. Star Wars (New Hope) changed all of that- it was a character driven script with amazing and newly invented special effects, incredible production, detailed props, and story points the combined mysticism with technology. It was a completely new concept and it blew people's minds! The story pacing was based on 1940's serials, so we had 10 minute vignets of story that would jump around, then eventually come together at the end. Lucas continued to use this style in the Indiana Jones series.

Fast forward a few decades and Lucas's ideas and techniques have been repeated to death. They're not fresh anymore, so the concept of a lightsaber or a cute robot are boring. The only thing holding the Star Wars franchise together is nostalgia. Star Trek is falling (or has fallen) into that same boat.

If you arent a 70s or 80s kid I could see how you could feel that way. But have you seen Star Trek lately? Those new CBS shows are heinous.

Well star wars has always been aimed at kids. That doesn't meant that some of it isn't layered so all ages can enjoy it. Some of it is just objectively bad material and some of the content completely missed the layers and come off as juvenile. However there are also the book, video games, board games, etc. The star wars universe as a whole is dirty and real feeling to me.

Star trek on the other hand is aimed at an older audience, but I never could really buy into the universe. The federation was just too perfect. I'm sure a level of nuance has been built out over time with it as well but it never struck me as believable. Of course just like star wars it has had some regrettable media over the years as well.

Thinking back a lot of my fondness for Star Wars came from the wonderful PC games of the 90's and early 2000's. Now the games are pretty bland and boring, I did play through the most recent one but honestly I barely remember it already.
