I have always read a lot of science fiction, and perhaps that affects my expectations for movies of this genre. Most have been disappointments to me. Star Wars in all its gyrations included.

I was 10 when Star Wars burst onto the scene and I must have seen it in theaters at least half a dozen times. The first two movies stand the test of time. The third was kind of stupid and the prequels are just absolute shit. Some of the movies made in the last few years are decent though. I'm a fan.

Star Wars was a product of the times. Back when the first movie came out in '77, scifi movies were either very dull or very corny. Star Wars (New Hope) changed all of that- it was a character driven script with amazing and newly invented special effects, incredible production, detailed props, and story points the combined mysticism with technology. It was a completely new concept and it blew people's minds! The story pacing was based on 1940's serials, so we had 10 minute vignets of story that would jump around, then eventually come together at the end. Lucas continued to use this style in the Indiana Jones series.

Fast forward a few decades and Lucas's ideas and techniques have been repeated to death. They're not fresh anymore, so the concept of a lightsaber or a cute robot are boring. The only thing holding the Star Wars franchise together is nostalgia. Star Trek is falling (or has fallen) into that same boat.
This man knows of what he speaks.

OP, no you're not and honestly that's not even a particularly rare opinion any more. The new ones almost all suck. I don't hate them (even the prequels in fact I think they're kinda like those mobiles and toys for babies where there's just so much shiny, lights, and sounds that it just kinda takes your mind off other stuff with plenty of other boring stuff to help) but they're bad movies. The recent ones had some good aspects (I wanted to like many of the new characters), but tried too hard to tie the new with the old while having no actual plan for what to do with anything and no clear intent for its characters, so it rehashed just about everything then when that was criticized tried to halfass try something else that was even worse before then trying to come up with nonensical way of tying it to the original and justify itself.

I think, on the whole, Star Trek is better, but honestly not by much and its probably in a worse shape than Star Wars these days even with Star Wars still floundering. Disney will find talented people to do something fun with Star Wars. CBS seems intent to completely trash Star Trek, and probably the only way it makes money is by being more like Star Wars, which is a shame.

I think Star Trek is pretty overrated as well. TNG especially. It was very good in parts but there was a lot of pretty terrible parts as well. The rest is about where it should be. I liked the original 6 movies (I even seem to like the even odd numbered ones more than most). The TNG era ones were not great. The Abrams ones were not really Trek movies, with the 1st and 3rd being ok but the 2nd being terrible.

Oh I should also say that I don't even like the original Star Wars films that much (and by that I mean I don't love them and they didn't define my entire childhood like apparently they did for a lot of people). There's a lot of great parts to them, and Empire Strikes Back is pretty great, and I even like the third a lot (although I get why some don't; I think I enjoy it more than the first although the first is almost certainly a better movie).

The Mandalorian is pretty decent, though I tend to prefer TV over movies in general.

First and foremost, the Star Wars franchise should be separated into the original trilogy and everything else. If you want to hate on anything after Return of the Jedi go ahead. And if you want to include some parts of Return of the Jedi, that's okay too.

But you're completely wrong about the first two movies. They were not meant to be anything other than what they were, entertaining space westerns. And they were truly epic examples of film making for that era. While the stories were simple, the art that went into making them was some of the best ever done in movies. They were fast, fun and capable of being enjoyed by kids and adults and that's tough to pull off.

After watching the old trilogy, I can agree that just the new movies suck.

The Phenom Menace and Attack of the Clones are terrible movies. Revenge of the Sith is the only one worth watching.

A New Hope is a decent movie.

The Empire Strikes Back is the best one in the series.

Return of the Jedi is OK but somehow disappointing.

It's the best of the three prequels, but the acting is still awful. Clone Wars was absolutely unwatchable---the dialog sounded like a high-school play.

I hope you mean Episode II - Attack of the Clones and not Clone Wars, because the Clone Wars serious was fabulous, even if the movie which started it was weak.

Despite my rant, I must admit Star Wars brought the most badass villain in all of cinema history.

Darth Vader has its own "entrance music" and can swing a sword and launch heavy machinery simultaneously.

Not to mention the epic voice and awesome outfit.

Darth Vader vs. Luke from the 2nd movie (Ep. 4) was the best scene in the entire franchise.

I enjoy the SW movies for what they are, the original trilogy has two good movies and one great movie, the prequels have two bad movies and one okay movie, and the sequel trilogy is worse than the sum of it's parts and just turned out to be hot garbage.

Funny story though. One day I was out tending to my horses when one kicked me right in the forehead. Ever since, sometimes I black out and wake up weird places in my neighborhood and all my neighbors are pissed at me.

Coincidentally I also happen to think Star Trek is a much better franchise than Star Wars on the whole. It has much higher highs, but MUCH lower lows, but on balance is very good. TOS is what it is, TNG is a mix of trash and art, DS9 is some of the best TV of all time crippled only by it's syndicated format. Voyager had some gems, but was on balance worse than the other TNG era series. Enterprise started out terribly, but found it's stride in the 3rd and 4th season (and even then the Commander Shran episodes kept the early series worth watching).

Trek as a franchise is out in the desert at the moment, and it's being handled by people that don't really get it. A lot of modern cynicism is being injected into a series that is fundamentally about humans rising to the occasion and it has resulted in some cognitive dissonance.

Anyhow, where was I... I think I'm about to black out again...

Wow, people being kicked in the head by horses happens way more often than I thought it did. :p

Star Wars was pretty much everything when I was a kid. Some of my earliest memories was watching the original trilogy as a young kid. I had the toys, the lunchbox, shirts, etc. The world of Star Wars was always an escape for me, and I really was always just hooked on it as far as imagination.

Some of the movies are great, and some of the movies only have great moments. Films like Episode 1 and 2 don't really hold up at all. George Lucas was always great at creating characters and the Star Wars universe, but he struggled when he was the solo writer, director, and basically in charge of all the calls on how to shoot the films. He had several well known actors beginning with Episode 1 (Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor), and their dialogue and performances were pretty flat compared to the rest of their careers. The CGI also didn't hold up very well as well.

Episode 1 and 2 were so bad I needed a break every 15 minutes to prevent brain damage. And I was high on percocet + others due to a wrist surgry.

My left side of the head feels a bit funny ever since i saw that stupid Jar Jar character. Hope its not permanent.

Star Trek's worst: Discovery and the 1st movies are still watchable.

DS9 is some of the best TV of all time crippled only by it's syndicated format.

Look up the episode "Little Green Men".
