It is Anandtech's responsibility that what takes place via PM's is kosher. If the site all of a sudden became known for finding a pot dealer because trades kept taking place via PM, they could become responsible for facilitating such actions.

That isn't true. The reverse is actually more correct. If it can be proven that PMs were routinely scanned, and moderation action taken, they could be held responsible for content. If PMs aren't routinely read, then they wouldn't be held accountable.

That's all a moot point, as PMs are private conversations, and I'm not aware of any legislation that would hold a website accountable for them.

They are private in what regard? The fact that they are called "Private Messages"?

Is there verbiage that I haven't read at this site that states "Private Messages" are correspondences that can only be read by the sender and receiver? I'd then have to agree with you. And I honestly don't know if there is.
