gaidensensei I believe
E^2 said three people were banned... so uh who was the third?![]()
Err... that was nick's side of the story as relayed to him by mosh (presumably).
Wasn't it four? mosh, nick, gaiden, and godless?
permabanned too? whoa
Was this like a one strike ur out kinda deal? I don't know him particularly well like GA & mosh but unlike those 2, I don't know of any instances where he was walking on thin ice. A bit harsh considering... it's kinda borderline entrapment.
nick if he is banned was not for the same reason as the other 3.
I don't remember gaiden being a troublemaker.

I think it's your duty to explain what is logged when we send PRIVATE messages.#3) GA with Mosh "removed" information for the restricted area and started to distribute such. This information was verified by PM logs.

Mosh is going to tell one side of the story - HER's. Potentially omitting the critical details; which are the ones that ended up getting her suspended.
Nick can only regurgitated what Mosh tells him.
Three things happened.
1) By accident during a test; the Moderator restricted areas were left open.
2) GA discovered such
3) GA worked with Mosh to capture and disseminate that information from restricted areas.
#1) Was our (Moderators) fault - We were alerted that this issue had happened and then went and closed it. No fault to the members
#2) GA nosed around while the breach was open. Most people are curious - had he left well enough alone at that point, the issue would have been a minor scolding for going where he should not have; as others indicated - looking inside the bank vault to see if it looks like they show in the movies.
#3) GA with Mosh "removed" information for the restricted area and started to distribute such. This information was verified by PM logs. This is equivalent to stealing money from the vault and/or mapping out the security system to a vault for a repeat breakin. - They knew what they were doing was wrong. NOT ACCEPTABLE

The thing is that while the bank analogy may be good, it is just an analogy. This is the internet, it's just not the same thing. Leaving a subforum open by mistake is simply not the same as leaving a bank vault door open.
They have backups. If they really wanted to read your PMs without your knowledge, they can pull it up from a backup. Not saying that's how it may work now, just that they can do it discretely. While I'm on the side of the Mod's at this point (I was a fan of Mosh but not GA, for the record), I thought the bolded was stated as incorrect earlier in this thread. Is the method USED incorrect, or is it incorrect that the Mod's can peruse PM's?
I'm fine with them doing so, but I'd like to think there wouldn't be this confusion on the subject. It is interesting that Mosh had her account issue so recently prior to ban. If I all of a sudden see my password changed without notification from the Mods, could it still be a Mod performing the action? I'd like to think I'd be notified at minimum.

No, the registration agreement absolves the site owner of account holder actions. It is Anandtech's responsibility that what takes place via PM's is kosher. If the site all of a sudden became known for finding a pot dealer because trades kept taking place via PM, they could become responsible for facilitating such actions.
