I say give her some time to recoup from her obvious mental illness. Up until that time though there is nothing wrong with keeping your distance. Limiting your contact with her to phone calls is fine. I don't think you should cut her off completely though.

No, but you should help your mom, if it doesn't interfere with your life too much. I would call the nearest family members who talk to her (or could talk to her) and plead for their help in getting her on meds. She'll thank you later and maybe you'll even be on Oprah.
I do NOT think you are in the wrong. She is terrorizing your whole family when she gets depressed! That phone call threatening to kill herself is childish and wrong. I don't go around threatening suicide when I get down...

I've attempted to help her, i've made apointments with doctors and tried to get her to go. Hell I almost had her commited after the suicide incident and the only reason I didn't was because she agreed to peacefully give up my sisters to my dad (a deal she later baked out of)
Sounds like she needs to address her illness and be on some sort of medication. As for you, I think you should back off for a while let things cool off and try to eventually patch up your relationship. Do it on your terms.
It takes time and effort. How old are you by the way?
As time goes on options will open up and you will also be better equipped to deal with her.
Or you can cut her off and then be one of thoes crazies who has issues because of their parents.
hehe I don't think I can backoff anymore than what I have been, havn't seen her since that day in court and only spoken to her twice since that time which is about 2 going on 3 years now

but yes I do have a few issues I need to work thru because of my childhood but nothing major that I can't deal with. My dad is a great guy and is there for me, and my stepmom is more of a mom to me than my mom ever was.
Your mom has a mental illness man ... it's chemical imbalance that makes her act certain ways ... it sounds like ...
