The safety crew wasn't union, the camera crews had left the set, angry about working conditions and safety issues. Scab workers were brought on to replace union workers.

"Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO, called the incident "a tragedy and a heartbreaking example of why production companies MUST take the safety and protection of our filmmakers more seriously.""

"Early on Thursday morning, several members of the camera crew reportedly arrived on set and submitted their resignations due to the safety concerns. The workers are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), which nearly staged a work stoppage including 60,000 film and TV crew workers last week over widespread concerns regarding labor conditions in the industry, before reaching a tentative three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP)."

"Chris Brooks

@chactivist

IATSE members on the set of Rust organized a walk out to protest unsafe conditions—they were then forcefully replaced by scabs. Six hours later there was a fatal accident on set. Those workers should not have been replaced, mgmt should have listened."

Bull shit, lay the blame on where it belongs, as it sure as fuck isn't the 2nd Amendment.

Guns kill people no matter how much you want to play pretend they do not. It is their inherent function and reason to exist.

Amendments don't matter, they can be changed but it will take a massacre of more than 10 000 children in one shooting to make Americans even consider that perhaps it's not a good idea to let people have them without a valid reason.

Yeah, I read that, it was an actual live bullet loaded in the gun.

But that shouldn't be a problem at all keeping loaded weapons lying around, it's perfectly legal.

It's me supporting important safety measures.

Certainly seems that there are more safety rules that could be introduced in the aftermath of this. But the problem seems to be that the existing rules are not followed or enforced...and having stronger unions would help in that.

(Except for police unions, who seem to have a negative effect on safety for the public.)

There are plenty of laws on the books, they just don't get followed. If the laws aren't being followed or prosecuted, what difference do they make?

"The armorer and assistant director who handed off a fatal prop gun to Alec Baldwin have been identified, after it was revealed that some crew members walked off the set of the movie Rust over safety concerns before the tragic shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

A search warrant released Friday said that armorer Hannah Gutierrez laid out three prop guns on a cart outside the filming location, and first assistant director Dave Halls grabbed the gun from the cart and brought it inside to Baldwin, unaware that it was loaded with live rounds.

'Cold gun!' shouted Halls before handing the gun to Baldwin, using the phrase to signal to cast and crew that the gun was safe to fire for the scene, the warrant said.

Seconds later, filming a scene inside an Old West-style church, Baldwin apparently aimed towards the camera and pulled the trigger, accidentally killing Hutchins as she filmed him, and injuring director Joel Souza, who stood behind her.

The gun that fired the fatal shot was a vintage-style Colt revolver, DailyMail.com has exclusively learned. The movie, set in 1880's Kansas, stars Baldwin as the infamous outlaw Harland Rust, whose grandson is sentenced to hang for an accidental murder.

A call sheet from the set identified the armorer's name as Hannah Gutierrez Reed, according to the Wall Street Journal. Gutierrez-Reed, 24, is the daughter of legendary Hollywood armorer and firearms consultant Thell Reed, who trained her from a young age, she said in a recent podcast interview.

She said in the podcast that she had recently completed her first film as head armorer on The Old Way, starring Nicolas Cage. 'I almost didn’t take the job because I wasn’t sure if I was ready, but doing it, it went really smoothly,' she said in the interview last month."
...............................................
Was the head armorer in 1 (one) other movie, did not hand the Colt to Baldwin, that was done by the assistant director (break in firearms protocol.)
.....................................................

"Unionized workers had walked off the set hours before the fatal shooting, after they complained about long hours, shoddy conditions and another safety incident days earlier involving 'two misfires' of a prop weapon.

A yet-unnamed prop master who oversaw the gun used in the fatal shooting was a non-union worker who was 'just brought in' to replace the workers who left over safety concerns, a source involved in the movie told the New York Post.

It's unclear whether Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer, had recently joined the production, or was one of the crew members who stayed behind after the walk-off.

However, a link in her Instagram bio points to an article about Rust from May, suggesting she had been attached to the production for some time.

Unionized employees had been complaining about the fact they had to stay overnight in Albuquerque - an hour's drive from the set - and not Sante Fe because production wouldn't pay for their hotels, according to sources cited by The Los Angeles Times and multiple social media posts by film and TV insiders.

When they turned up to set to clear their things on Thursday, they found they'd been replaced by locals.

It begs the question of who those local workers were, what their training was and to what extent did they check the weapon before it was handed to Baldwin. "

I like Alec a lot, especially when he did this skit on SNL:

However, as producer and directors, I kind'a feel that Alec, Hutchins and Souza were in part responsible for the tragedy for the fact they were hands-on in control of the production.

Unfortunately, if past incidents are any indication, these producers will get off easy, blaming someone else for their mismanagement. I mean, John Landis got off killing two children that he decided to hire illegally!

Inquiry into Baldwin shooting focuses on custody of gun - News | Khaleej Times

A 911 call to police immediately afterward conveyed the shock and anger felt on the set.

"We’ve had two people accidentally shot by a prop gun; we need help immediately," the caller tells a police dispatcher.

"Was it loaded with a real bullet?" the dispatcher asks.

"I don’t - I can’t tell you that," the caller replies. "And this (expletive) AD ... this mother (expletive) – he’s supposed to check the guns, he’s responsible for what happens on the set."

Baldwin, one of Hollywood's best-known actors, has said he was cooperating fully with the inquiry. He retweeted a story from trade journal Variety headlined "Alec Baldwin Was Told Prop Gun Was Safe Before Fatal Shooting, Affidavit Says."
So anxious to ensure he is free of blame, even though as a producer, he was part of the stupid decisions that led to this tragedy.

and use common sense to check, then double and triple check.
Not as an actor he isn't. Now as a producer, he is responsible in part for EVERYTHING on the set including the real qualified crew walking off.
I tend to agree with @tweaker2 , he bears that responsibility.

Back to the question of safety, why was there live ammo present anywhere on the property? That should have been dealt with weeks ago. There is no excuse for that.

Interesting:

Days before the actor fatally shot Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer on the set of “Rust,” a gun used in the production inadvertently went off at least two times, ex-crew members said.
The incidents prompted a complaint to a supervisor about the safety practices on the set, which was outside Santa Fe.
The crew members were among several workers who quit just hours before the fatal shooting over complaints about working conditions

Could be a disgruntled crew member that swapped out the blank for a live round?
they quit over safety concerns and behold a few hrs after they quit, someone was shot with a live round (which should not have been anywhere near the set to begin with).

As one of the producers they hire people to handle props, was he supposed to personally go around before each scene was filmed and personally check every prop for safety?.
I'm not saying that but the drama with the union camera crew that unfolded around him, I find it hard to believe that none of the other producers discussed that situation with him. When his stunt double misfired twice, how come he didn't take notice of that? As one of the few people there who could have put his foot down and fixed things, his inaction made him complicit to the criminal negligence of his fellow producers.

Not only was there live ammo on the set, but the gun fired by Alec Baldwin had been used by other cast members for target practice with live ammunition. The armorers room had both live ammo and blank ammo in it.

"
The prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico movie set had been used by crew members offsite for fun, a new report claims.

The gun, which was fired by Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust,” may have even been loaded with live rounds when it was used for what was essentially target practice, TMZ reported.

Multiple sources connected to the production of the film told TMZ that the gun was fired at off-the-clock gatherings – which could explain how a live round found its way into the gun’s chamber.

Another source who was on set told the outlet that when cops arrived they found live ammo and blank rounds stored in the same area, where the fatal mix-up could have occurred."
