Nothing worked during windows install nether, i failed to mention that. I did that w/o a mouse

Anyways, BIOs shows nothing of a KB mouse thing. The only thing even close to interesting was:

USB Park Mode
USB TD Read
USB Periodic Data Reads
USB USB ASYN Reads

Thats all I saw under USB or anything possibly related.

if you open up the device manager are there any problems that might be mouse or usb related? is your keyboard usb as well? do you have another mouse to try?

does windows recognize other USB devices?

Can you hook up your mouse via PS/2 or use a USB to PS/2 converter?

Try a different USB mouse?

try installing the motherboard drivers and see what happens. i can't imagine why windows wouldn't have the usb straightened out, but perhaps that's it. if not you might have a flakey usb port(s) (i'm assuming you've tried them all?).

I can. Also to note:

The lazer works on the mouse, nice and red ;)
The device manager shows nothing of a mouse, i didnt see a category for it ether
The device manager shows an audio controller with a yellow exclamation mark, but nothing else
"Mouse" in control panel, shows no hardware in the dialogue box, even after drivers for mouse have been installed. It wont let me hit 'enter' on trobleshoot or properties for some reason

the mouse worked in knoppix right?

Alright. To answer fishers question, yes the mouse worked via USB with Knoppix.

Some new info:
I bought a new usb/ps2 converter, and now my mouse works. As a matter of fact, I'm using the new computer now (which makes talking on AT easier now - so i dont have to go back & forth on 2 comps :D)

The problem is, the USB devices wont work. I've tried an IPOD, a Joystick, an "iToy" for the playstation 2 (the light turned on but i never used it with pc so idk if anything in the computer was supposed to respond).. but the joystick never showed up in the control panel and the lights on the joystick never turned on.

And yes.. I have tried all the USB ports.

first off, make sure you install all the updates. if you installed xp without any service packs that could be your problem right there (i'm so used to my slipstreamed sp2 cd that i totally forgot you might not have sp1 installed). after you get it all up to date and if it's still not working, check back.

Make sure USB devices are enabled in your BIOS.

In Windows, do you have active USB host Controllers and USB Root Hubs visible in Device Manager?

It almost sounds like your motherboard may be shorted to the case. I would make sure there are no standoffs out of place, or loose screws between the case and motherboard that could be shorting something out..

Checked the case, no loose screws here. The motherboard is tightly on to the case as well.

Here's another thing to make my life that much more wonderful, all downloads go around 30kb/s and everything i download is corrupted. The other computer on my network doesnt have this problem. The actual internet speed is fast as usual and loads webpages as quick as my other computer.

So all the driver's I downloaded are corrupted and im going to spend forever trying to find them on another computer, downloaded, burned, unzipped, installed... argh fun! then i'll find out that my internet is still slow and wont take USB devices!

wait, is System Devices the last thing listed in your device manager? and are you using an onboard nic or add in card?

what service pack do you have loaded?

Yes. System devices is the last thing on my device manager. I believe I installed SP2. I'll check.

Also, with the motherboard I had got a sound card, this soundcard didnt have a cd and I guess the computer didn't recognize it, so its displayed as a yellow ex. '!' mark. as "multimedia audio controller" - until I figure the name out to find the drivers, it'll just have to stay like that.

Actually, I dont think I did install SP2. Im downloading it now, and the funny thing is.. my internet is back up to speed. 600/kbs now, so I guess im happy on that front. i'll continue to update drivers and install SP2, but other than that, im pretty lost.

Now Im pissed. I installed a game, figureing well.. since the keyboard and mouse work - I pretty much have all the drivers i need right? so what the heck.. i start the game, loads fine.. start playing (BF2 Single Player).. 1 minute into it.. my processor makes this same alarm sound it did when i first installed windows.

The sound was similar to an old police siren (Like in MIDI format lol).. coming from the computer. The second I hear the noise... i hit alt f4 to end the game.. the noise goes away.. now I refuse to play any game with this happening.. why could this be happening? No it is not the thermal paste.. so please dont even go there, i re-did it three times thinking it was that, and after getting that paste everywhere.. im sick of doing it, its on the processor.. nice and smooth, thin.. perfect.. but now i got that ****** happening again where the alarm goes off. It went away the second the game turned off.

it seems like it should still be listed, anyway, it's not coming up for some reason. hopefully the service pack will straighten it out. cross your fingers!

can you expand system devices and take another screen shot?

edit: i just did a quick google search for abit an8 usb and i got a bunch of links with people having various problems.

edit: maybe try making a new xp cd with sp2 slipstreamed in and reinstalling? i don't expect it to make much difference, but at this point it might be worth a try.
