The system devices:

First:
I don't know how to "slip-stream" a windows xp cd, nore how to create a copy of windows xp to have sp2 with it.

Second:
I don't know if this is all worth the trouble.. I hope the AT users I bought this from will allow me to send the parts back to them.. Im starting to think that purchasing used parts from online forums is a bad idea :(

What are the temps of your graphics card? Perhaps thats what is overheating. Also another good possibiltiy..if you video card needs an external power connector, and it's not plugged in, the sound your describing sounds a lot like my 7800GT when I forgot to plug it in. That could explain why it doesn't happen to you start running something that actualy uses the graphics card..

i've bought parts from the forums with no problems before, so don't get too discouraged. i'd say it was a bad board but it works fine in knoppix which is really what's got me stumped.

have you tried pulling out anything that you don't need to get the system up and going? sound cards or network cards, stuff like that. maybe there's an irq problem (altho there shouldn't be). make sure you have plug and play OS turned on in the bios.

Well the alarm your getting sounds like either overheating(CPU or graphics card), or graphics card not getting enough power. It may just be that the motherboard is bad. Could be a weak power supply, but not as likely. You should be able to check the temps of your graphics card as well, and load temps of the CPU. If you install the Abit uGuru software, you can monitor temps with that, and it should have settings for the alarm temps as well. In the uGuru settings in bios you should be able to turn of the beeping all together.

EDIT: And just to verify, you did use standoffs when you mounted the motherboard in the case right?

For the USB, go to integrated periphrials section of bios, on-chip PCI devices, and make sure USB is enabled in there.

which is kinda odd ey?

I ran BF2 with a PCI soundcard, and the thing hasnt stopped, it's worked now for over 2.5 hours without shutting down or giving me any warnings, its running perfectly. Its a machine. It's just the USB ports now that are itching at me.

And somebody suggested that he reset the bios, and it could have defaulted to disabled for some reason, so it never hurts to check..but it's really starting to sound like a screwy motherboard or maybe incompatible ram, especialy since he got it used. There is obviously something still wrong, so it never hurts to check the basics.

oh i know that, but he's already checked all that i believe. a few people have suggested checking the bios, it certainly looks like his usb ports are turned off from the fact they don't show up at all in windows. on a motherboard that new tho the default for the usb ports shouldn't be off anyway. i'm thinking it's a wonky motherboard as well but i wanted to try and go through all the options since he bought it used and returning it might be a hassle.

Which is very nice of you ;), well. I do have a few usb connectors on the motherboard itself, I could just get some usb add-on thing and give myself 2-4 more from there ey?

I had given the computer over to my little brother, and he said (during the 5 hours BF2 has been on, it went "dee doo, dee doo" 2 hours into it -- it went on for about 5 seconds and then went away and didn't come back at all he said. idk what that could be, but i checked the bios and the cpu was at 51'C.

Also, since the mobo doesnt have on-board sound I have to buy a cheap 20$ soundcard too

Also to note: My Ram: Geil 1024MB (2x 512) PC3200
Motherboard: Dual DDR400 slots.
I thought those two were ment for eachother, isn't that true? Im sure thats a dumb question ;)

Alright. Now this is starting to become annoying- the motherboard somehow slows down my download speeds online, everything i download is corrupted, and the majority of downloads (even from fast websites) go 30-50kb/s, and when i install them there's always some 'error, or installation failed'

Also, the USB Ports
Also, the fact that I have to buy a sound card to hear sound

It's just getting to me, I'm going to try and return the motherboard for a new one. Meanwhile purchasing a new motherboard from newegg or something and once the repaired motherboard gets in... sell it. The only thing that gets me is the fact that this motherboard was bought from an AT user this week.. and since i've only had it for 3-4 days.. really gets to me..

Anyone know of a great budget motherboard for cheaps?

Looking for a s939, pci express motherboard w/ onboard sound. ne ideas? i cant believe i spent 60 bucks on a mobo that dont work from an AT user.. and now i gotta buy another one.

That "dee doo, dee doo" is Windows's USB hotplug notification sound. I've had it happen during gameplay and it turned out my USB mouse was bad (it also ceased to move when I heard that sound). The USB controller may also be bad.

[q/]You've got to lift off and nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
