I realize I have this in another thread of mine but that wasnt the primary problem. This is entirely different than the thread was aiming for so i created a new one. Here it is:

PROBLEM: BOUGHT NEW WINDOWS XP

I put the cd in, and as the blue screen came up to ask me wether i wanted to create or delete a partition, my computer is making this ALARM SOUND! 2 Different noises, going back and forth.. what could this be?!??!?!

Should I let the partition continue?

Backround:
New computer
Bought new parts
Installed them all, and the computer always loaded from CD (Even with BIOs saying it would load from the hdd). I tried installing with my old windows xp cd, and it had some error. The error turned out to be the cd's fault and I had to bye a new windows xp cd. I got that cd, and now this problem happened.

Look in your BIOS settings. Some motherboards have warn features if fans go below a certain RPM. I have to turn this off with my system as the Zalman fan runs slow enough to always trigger this.

So, turn the fans -- off? WIll I have to do this for every installation? Program/Game/etc?

First I must say, great post, giving us some background in the original post is a great idea, unfotunately many posters often leave this very important information out. (I know I have)

You say all the machine is new and the parts are new, is it an OEM machine that you are upgrading or did you buy new components for a custom build?

In the bios is there some sort of alarm for HDD partitioning, new OS installation or anything of that sort?

I mean no offence but is the power dongle for the CPU fan plugged in? or maybe the mobo fan?

I think that it would be beneficial to open the box up and investigate that all components are properly connected to the mobo of PSU.

Oh also, the alarm sound, is it a constant ring or a series of beeps, you say 2 different noises, do you mean 2 different alarms with 2 different sounds OR 1 alarm that makes 2 different sounds?

I havent had a chance to read your other thread, so I am really just shooting from the hip here, I hope this helps some, post back with an update if you get a chance, good luck.

I am upgrading a custom build. The computer specs are as follows:

1024 pc3200 ram
an8 motherboard - recently bought from at user
7600gt pci express recently bought from newegg
80gb ide hdd
amd 3700+ processor recently bought from at user

The only thing "odd' about this set-up is that the pins for the psu dont match the motherboard. There are more pins on motherboard than on the psu, 4 more to be exact.

The parts were bought here from AT users. The new parts are shown as above.

By no means I take any offence to the previous question, I'm not that advanced of a cpu builder and things like that I may fail to check for. The cpu fan is correctly installed.

And it is ONE alarm making two different sounds.

I looked into the bios, and there is nothing stated about some alarm for the HDD paritioning or installation.

Also, I cannot disable the fans (i dont think), but i can "enable" the fans to be controled by me, mainly the power voltages etc.. nothing that i know how to operate though

You don't want to disable the fans, just the warnings for the fan RPM's(if you have the option). Also, if it's an alternation high/low sound, that usualy indicates the CPU is overheating, so check you heatsink, make sure it's making good contact. Did you apply a fresh coat of thermal paste when you installed the heatsink? As for the power supply, you have a 20pin ATX power supply, but your motherboard has the newer 24pin connection. That isn't likely related to your problem as long as you have a quality brand. What brand is your PSU, and what is the rating on the 12v rail?

PSU: MGE

What's drawn in - in a box with a red pen: LC-B450E

How can the CPU be overheating? THe CPU fan works, I've used enough thermal paste, and as for bios.. I have no idea.

The only thing I see is:
ABIT EQ Beep Control
Temp. Monitoring
Voltage Monitoring
Fan Speed Monitoring
FanEQ1 Control
FanEQ2 Control

I can see that Im making the complicated, not that it'll help but I have the bios "?Guru Utility v1.00". Anyways, if I dont have the option to disable the warnings, can i just proceed with the install? or should I take the somewhat 3 day old thermalpaste off and put a new coat on - then try again? The arguement that I have against that is that I used the linux utility: knoppix - to see if my computer worked. I turned the program on, and it looked pretty good. So it seems as though the cpu may not be the problem

Also to mention: The beeping doesnt happen when it is loading the cd. The beeping happens the second you see the dialog window that asks if you wish to create or delete a partition. Another thing to mention is the LED display on the mobo itself says- FF

UPDATE:

I started installing windows... yes, with the alarm running. The install made it to 81% and the computer shut off, the computer is very hot (I opened the case and could feel the heat).. Im so lost..

If anyone has any ideas, please post them. I'll be back in a few hours after I catch some Z's

What does the BIOS report your temps as?

obviously something is overheating. are the PSU fan(s) turning? did you use too much thermal paste maybe? what about the video card? the aux power plugged in (if you have one)? fan turning? also check your bios temps as ry said, maybe keep an eye on them for a few minutes to see what might be going up.

edit: in however many years i've worked on computers i've never seen loading a windows install via cd cause a problem that was it's own fault. even if it worked with knoppix there has got to be something else going on unless you bought some wacky bootleg windows cd that kicks your computer into overdrive or something.

edit 2: leave the side of the case off and try installing windows. maybe your cpu fans are revolting against MS or something. just a thought.

lol. Well, I'll keep an eye on the computers temps, I'll let it run overnight (w/o installing windows), if it shuts off then okay - if not, it must be the computer speeding up or some other issue. I dont understand HOW it could be any thermalpaste problem due to the fact that the 'beeping' always occurs precisly at the time the 'create or delete a partition' window appears, and continues throughout windows xp installation. Otherwise, the beeping never happens - as for a faulty cd, i've never had a 'faulty cd' to begin with, so i hardly doubt its that.

Reset the CMOS. Clean the CPU and heatsink with alcohol and reapply the thermal paste (very light coat only). Reboot into BIOS and check for the CPU temp (should be between 30 and 45C). Most Abit boards come with an extra molex power connector at the bottom of the MB. Make sure this connector is attached to the PSU. It's also best to use a 24 pin PSU with that MB (extra 4 pin). Retest with another PSU if you done all of the above.

Is this a stock CPU cooler? You may have a bad MB if the CPU cooler is working properly. I suspect you will also encounter this problem when you stress test with Prime95 in MAX HEAT MODE.

Other people have said it, but it's very obvious that something(s) are overheating. Take off the CPU heatsink and wipe it and the CPU down with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. After you do that, get some thermal paste and reapply it to the CPU (I find that using a cotton swab to do this works very well). When you apply the thermal paste, it's important to make sure the coverage is complete and even so as to eliminate any bald spots which could cause the CPU to overheat. The CPU might not be the only culprit, so check out the RAM modules and HDDs to see if any of them are defective and throwing off heat.

How can I reset the CMOS? Also, does that Alarm mean something is overheating? I don't see how that can be because I can do whatever I want to in BIOs, or I can let the computer run knoppix for a while and nothing will happen, the only time this alarm happens.. is, again, when the option to create or delete a partition window appears. It only comes up at that window, no where else. I'll try running the checks asked above, and turn on his computer running knoppix to see if it'll overheat running that.

The only other PSU I have is another 20 pin connector.

Alright,
If I remove the thermal paste from the processor
Clean it up
Re-apply new thermal paste
Swap PSU's (I have a new PSU for my computer, brand new, 450w, works well)

That's all I have to swap. I have a s754 board and a s754 processor on my computer, so I can't swap those. I can try the processor & mobo with my computer by taking out mine..

But if I do all of this and it still happens, what should I do? For a novice computer builder, this is quite aggravating

some of the systems I build have a feature that an alarm goes off when software tries to write or change the partition info or MBR look in your bios and see if there is a default virus protection on, like trend micro pc cillin......if its on, turn it off.......could be way off the mark here, but try anyway....they were a 2 toned alarm, one high one low....kinda like an english police car.....

CPU Temp is at 31' C and there is no virus protection option anywhere in BIOs

I put a whole new coat of thermal paste on the cpu, and iI've successfully created a partition and formatted the hard drive, now im installing xp! hopefully i can get all the way through this w/o problems.

There's a jumper on the MB to clear CMOS. Removing the CR2032 battery on the MB will also clear CMOS. Wipe your HDD (zero format) and reload windows. Again, what's the model number of the CPU cooler? The system should not run HOT, even at full load. CPU cooler should be warm to the touch.

Another thing... make sure the heatsink is seated correctly. The heatsink, when clipped in, should be secure and flush to the top of the CPU. If you clip it in and almost take off your finger trying to get it off, then it's probably on correctly.

Oh yea, that heatsink was a mother' trying to get in there. Its in snug ;)

I installed the mouse drivers.. but the mouse doesnt work.. any ideas? I cant install the vc drivers or anything b/c the mouse dont work - i tried using keyboard commands but the set-up just exits..

Make sure you don't use alot of thermal paste! I believe the number was a 0.003" - 0.005" thick layer. Anything thicker will impair thermal transfer.

It's all good. I didnt put that much on there, a very very small dripit. Just enough to cover the cpu, no worries on the thickness of thermal paste, i got cha ;)

Now about my mouse...

See if there is an option in your bios for "enable KB mouse support" or something like that. I can't remember exactly what it was but that might be the option you need.

nevermind you got it working. as for the mouse? i'm guessing it worked fine during the windows install? is it ps2 or usb? anything missing if you check the (wow i hate it when my mind goes blank and i'm using my mac and not my pc) the hardware part of the control panel?
